I also like #1 and #5!  Neither look terribly "bridal" though, so I would definitely see about getting a BM dress and maybe jazzing up with a belt or something for some cost savings.

Are you typically allowed to take pics in a bridal store these days?

I went several when I was looking and was only allowed in one!  My sister went to Alfred Angelo (and that's it!) about 3 years ago though and they didn't seem to care.

Yesterday with the drugs, and now this...? You have weird advice.

I guess maybe it's different, but that last one reminded me of some BM dresses I tried on at AA, so I thought I would throw it out there.  The first one actually looks a lot like the one my sister went with, although it was a halter top rather than a deep V neck.

@phira even said she tried sleep aids, and I still don't think it's invalid to take control of your own sleep as much as you can.  If I can't sleep, I would take a benedryl before I would stay up all night at the mercy of someone else.  When I go to BF's parents house, the bed is too small for my comfort, so I always knock myself out so I can get some sleep rather than none.

And if my bridal gown turns out to be a BM dress, does it matter in the least? It's the dress I'm wearing for my wedding. It doesn't matter how it's pitched.

Yeah exactly, that's why I recommended that you don't only allow them to pitch you the "brides" dresses, because you will probably have more selection with the BM ones!  Especially if you personalize it yourself.

@kelani23 You're Your statement about Stitches' dress sounded like you were saying that because its a tea length dress and not a full length dress that it was somehow not as 'bridal'.  You don't have to wear a full length dress to look like a bride.

ETA: grammar FAIL. YOUR. not you're. How embarrassing.

I meant she shouldn't be pigeonholed into the ones that are marketed as "for brides" because there wouldn't be as many to choose from!

Even though I don't think many people have their bridesmaids wear white, I've heard they are almost all available in white, so you can have more choices if you open up that possibility, and if they are a little too simple, you can spice them up with alterations or accessories (and save money in the process, which would be #1 to me!).

I get that now. It was just worded very poorly and came across rude, as some other things have. I get that it wasn't your intention.

Yeah, I'm pretty offended from the drug recommendation, but considering that I've been told that a blue dress isn't bridal enough, I'm irritated on Stitches behalf as well. A wedding dress is defined as a dress that a person wears when they get married. All of the dresses posted are lovely dresses, and would be amazing wedding dresses. The end.

And um Benadryl = diphenhydramine = most common sleep aid. That's what I occasionally take. Good lord. Considering the side effects, it would have been a disaster if I had taken one on Tuesday night; I wouldn't have been able to wake up easily enough to get to work.

  • Ahhh so exciting! Cross off ALL the things from your to-do list! Woohoo! As for the dresses, I really do love them all. The first and the last one are favorites, but they're all stunning and bridal-looking. I can't wait to see which one you pick out!

  • Oh, as another note: I'm not necessarily picking this weekend. My mom and I will go to a couple other bridal stores in my hometown a couple weeks from now. There are a few there she's really excited to see on me, so we'll wait until after that.

And I learned today we can request a 6" round cake from our baker for a specific flavor at our tasting for a small fee, so we're going to be doing that because CAKE. I might be more excited about that than the dress.

@KeptInStitches Cake tasting has been my favorite part of wedding planning so far!

Ours is July 1 - are you leaning toward any specific flavors?
  • FWIW, when I was reading, I completely took Kelani's comment to mean that because it may look like some "non-bride" dresses, she might be able to find a beautiful dress that is not marketed as a bridal gown and therefore much less cost, since we all know what a racket everything bride-related is.

The drug thing, still weird.  You do realize you're not really getting healthy, restorative sleep when you're using an antihistimine to knock yourself out, right?

  • @KeptInStitches, I love the first one!  Try them all on!  You will be shocked at how they look and fit NOTHING like the photos.  We got in a big debate at the bridal salon because we were all so confused when we looked up the stock photo of the dress I liked and was wearing- we did NOT think it could possibly be the same dress!

I'm in serious LOVE with the lace one.  I never considered a shorter dress until I saw that one!  Now I'm like "oh... well it makes sense for a beach wedding.  You really can't go wrong with any of them, but the 1st and the lace are my faves!

@KeptInStitches - I'm so ready for cake tasting, too!  I called a place to set it up thinking we'd get to do it this weekend or relatively soon, and they told me the earliest appointment was in July.  So I made FI stop at the grocery store for a piece of cake...but it was totally not the same as wedding cake.

FI doesn't really "get" cake flavors.  He doesn't seem to understand the difference between vanilla/yellow cake and white/almond cake.  He thinks they will taste the same.  And then his dad chimed in and said we could go get cake mixes so we could taste the difference between flavors and he didn't really understand that that's why we go to the cake appointment...to taste the flavors!

My FI doesn't like chocolate cake... :(  :(:(:(:(

  • My FI wants chocolate cake b/c that's what he has for all of his birthdays.  I'm not against it, especially since we want raspberry as our filling...I love chocolate and raspberry together.  His mom wants to pay for the cake and her vote is for the white/almond which I also love.
  • Dress #1 is definitely a winner! I hope you find a dress you love!

  • I also like the 1st and 5th dresses. I always think retro/50s when I see tea length dresses, not that that's a bad thing. Oh and we're not getting married for another year but I seriously daydream about cupcake tasting!

  • LOVE 1 and 2!! How did the shopping go?

  • I gave an update in the weekend thread, but I wasn't able to try on any of these dresses - the shop I went to didn't have any of them on hand. These dresses might work, though:

    image
    image
    - to be hemmed somewhere past my knees, remove the belt, and ivory lace over ivory

To be honest, though, I'm not in love with either of them. I do like the first better than the second, but there was no "saying yes to the dress" moment.

And our reception venue really isn't going to work. I wanted it to so badly. But the restaurant has been redivided upstairs, and our guests would be in two separate rooms, and obviously in two separate rooms. So now we have to redo the reception, I wanted a restaurant, I wanted simple, and I'm really frustrated now. However, we might be able to do a golf course that does work with the restaurant we wanted - but it's up to FI. I'm too busy to deal with it right now so I turned this over to him.
