DR. said I was overweight oh my god

I have a BMI of almost exactly 25. She said I was a few pounds over weight and suggested I try weight watchers. I know that it's her job and she's looking out for me, but I really struggle with eating. It used to be that I would practically starve myself and exercise all the time, and I have been recently working on accepting my body. I am pretty muscular from all the working out and lifting. I know that BMI isn't the best way to measure it. I know I am not fat. I am trying really hard lately to eat more and not have any guilt if i eat more than a vegetable. I nearly cried because she said I was a few pounds over weight. Honestly, this is a great lesson for me. I need to learn to stop worrying so much about a few pounds. FI is really happy that I am eating more and that I even gained some weight back. I need to take comments like these in stride and not fall completely apart. I have come very far in the last few years. I just wanted to talk about it. So there.

  • That is always tough! I'm so sorry. You're doing the right things though, and it seems like you know that, so just carry on being beautiful you!

  • *hugs* Glad you're eating better. Body image is rough to deal with.

  • Fuck your doctor. I mean I know they mean well..but sometimes they can be tools too. You are beautiful and that's all that matters. If YOU feel healthy then screw it. I am 5' 1" and 154lb. I am curvy and I like it and I feel wonderful!

  • *hugs* I used to be a dancer and I had some serious body issues because of that. It is still something I'm struggling with. I have no doubt you are awesome just the way you are.
  • BMI is really a super crappy way to measure or determine health and your doctor should know that.

Some doctors just suck. I'm overweight, I know it, I'm working on it. I went to a new doctor last week to get my thyroid checked (I have a plethora of symptoms, a family history of it, and it was suggested I get it tested at my last annual exam) and she was a bitch about it. She said "I know you just want an easy fix but don't count on this". I absolutely cried when I got home.

It can be so hard to accept yourself and move past body image issues. It's really great you are moving in that direction! Don't let her comments set you back!

Fuck that. BMI is the worst indicator when you have muscle. If you want the real picture, get either a super good body fat scale or go to a doctor/nutritionist with the calipers to measure your body fat percentage.

I used to date a body builder who was obese by BMI standards, but only had like 9% body fat (on a bad day; less if he was competing). He had to jump through all kinds of hoops with health/life insurance because they just wanted to go based on BMI.

  • If you are "overweight" by less than 10 pounds (or even 20) to jump straight to Weight Watchers is crazy.  A simple, "you may want to watch what you are eating" would have been enough.  Or suggest more fruits and veggies and fewer cookies.

It makes the doctor sound like a stock holder in Weight Watchers.  Ick.

  • I had a doctor recommend WW once to me when I wanted a thyroid check due to family history. I was maybe 15 lbs overweight. I never saw that bitch again.

I agree with this. Also, if you are trying to lose only a little amount of weight then Weight Watchers may not really work for you, especially if you do the points system. I know I tried to do weight watchers to lose like 10-15 pounds and the number of points I was given was ridiculously low. By lunch my points were gone (and that was me really crunching numbers and figuring out different things to eat and different combinations) and I was still starving.

  • I did ww. I lost nearly 50lbs. I have kept off most of it. If you are just looking to lose 5 to 10lbs you get very few points. Its at that point that you have to fill yourself on 0pt things like fruit and most veggies in order to stay full without killing all of your points.
Its not really worth it for so few pounds.

  • I'm fat. I always have been and likely always will be. I had a doc in another state that I adored- she told me that I was clearly an intelligent woman so she wasn't going to give me a lecture about weight. Instead, she was going to keep me healthy and provide support if I ever decide I need it. I nearly hugged her.

To me, a doc should only comment if there has been a dramatic change that causes alarm or there is serious obesity. Even then, it should be handled in the kindest manner possible.

Love your body. Take pride in how strong it is, how much it can do, and how appealing others find it.

  • I fucking hate the damn BMI thing. I actually found my current doctor because I asked her what she thought about the BMI and she sighed and went "I can see how it can be useful as a guideline, but it really tells us very little. It's just a formula. I'd rather measure actual body fat, run some blood tests, things like that to figure out if you're healthy" and I was like yes finally I'm in, you're my doctor.

I'm all about being healthy. Eating healthy, staying as active as is healthy for you body, and having a healthy body image. BMI can go fuck itself.

  • There was an interesting article in some magazine (Cosmo? Glamour?) recently about how doctors often don't understand eating disorders and weight issues. It's amazing how many doctors didn't catch warning signs and didn't understand the psych issues that go along with these problems in whatever study they were talking about. A medical professional telling someone who has had body issues and has finally put on some muscle to drop a few pounds is more likely to spur more body issues than to help anything. Yes she's your doctor, and yes she probably means well, but her word isn't infallible gospel. If you have the resources, a more accurate body fat test could be really helpful. The formula doesn't properly take muscle into account.

    Fuck your doctor. Seriously.

I'm fat and it's taken me years to figure out how the medical system stigmatizes people (especially women) for not meeting a completely arbitrary, non-health-related standard. Doctors have a lot of responsibility and are treated with a lot of respect, which makes it even harder to handle when they fat-shame people.

Honestly? Unless 1) being at a certain numerical weight would, entirely on its own, improve your health in a measurable way, and 2) you want those particular health improvements, there is no reason to try to change the number on the scale.

Weight isn't a meaningless number when it comes to health; if I gain or lose a lot of weight in a short period of time, it could indicate a problem. But weight itself is not an indicator of health or non-health, and for a lot of people, losing weight wouldn't improve health at all.

A lot of us have worked on eating healthier foods, getting more sleep, taking care of our bodies, and exercising regularly ... and not seen much of a change in weight. So why do we need to lose weight? If I'm eating healthy foods and not eating lots of unhealthy foods; if I'm exercising regularly in a way that makes my body stronger without injuring it; if I'm getting lots of restful sleep; if I'm taking care of my stress levels ... who the FUCK cares what I weigh?

    So basically, fuck your doctor.

Everyone's body composition is different.  I'm not a waif, even when I'm skinny, I'm a size 8 and I look gaunt and sick.  At 5'8 with 38G boobs, I'm a substantial build of woman.  No way would I ever be 'skinny'
  • I decided a number of years ago that my body was no longer a battlefield. I do not wage war on it and I don't let anyone else bring their weapons of mass destruction on the field. It's not news to me if the medical staff says, "You could lose some weight." My usual response? "No sh*t, Sherlock." I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 15 years ago and had a ferocious time using the glucometer because of the year I spent battling the scale. Numbers=bad girl. Arghhh.

I found some good help online, especially the Healthy at Every Size site. Today, my blood sugar numbers are almost in the not-diabetic range, but guess what? I still weigh the OMG you're FAT. I'll fire the next doctor who isn't willing to treat me as I am.

I am pissed at your doctor. So fucked up. If they consider you only a few pounds overweight what is the point in even mentioning it? I mean, you can take a poop and lose a pound instantly. It's not a health problem. And I especially want to throat punch your doctor if they knew about your history with body image and eating and exercise. I've had a similar struggle and it's very easy to slip back to old habits when things trigger you.

Good for you for staying strong about this. BIG HIGH FIVE! I wish you had told him/her to fuck off, though.

And find a new doctor. That makes me angry. Especially if you already had struggled with it. I'm sure you are much healthier than some "skinny" people.

HAAAAAAAAAA yes. "Lemme go take a poop and then you can weigh me again."

Maybe this is where the phrase "I don't give a shit" came from.

Bahahah. No it's where "Hang on, let me go take a shit before you weigh me first." came from. Maybe I just have big poops?

Also, maybe I'm the only creepy weirdo that has weighed myself before and after a poop on several occasions before.

You've seen them poop? How do you know? Why am I so intrigued by pooping right now?

Well... I mean... I suppose they could have just peed or changed a tampon or something. I wasn't paying THAT close attention. But they weighed themselves (on the scale in the bathroom/locker room), used the toilet, and then weighed themselves again.

Then I texted a friend of mine, who is ALWAYS talking about shit like that (pun intended) and said "I found your dream girl."

I seriously hope a tampon wouldn't weigh enough to tip the scales. Now I'm grossed out.

lol. That would be nasty. But here I am talking about poop weight so who am I to judge.
  • Seriously, if you've got even some muscular development - BMI can GTFO. I run around 26.5 BMI. Since I otherwise really, really like my doctor, after the BMI based lose weight - I had a MMA fight, so I did cut weight (yes, I know, bad for me) and walked in actually 3 pounds over my fight weight. Which put me at 21.9 or right in the middle of healthy. Doctor thought I was sick enough to need to be in the hospital, way too thin. And since then, she says nothing on my weight.

Women get treated like crap by everyone for having muscular development. Anyone doesn't like that, they can try to keep up with me. I'll try to not make you cry in 90 seconds.
  • *hugs*

You should tell your doctor that you've had eating issues and request that s/he not remark on your weight unless it is a serious issue, which it sounds like it's not.
