    Holy shit! So did he actually like stop the ceremony?!? Your poor friend.
    @ClimbingBrideNY

    Yes. The pastor said "we are gathered here today" and then he interrupted and said it was over.

    DEAR GOD. I had no idea this kind of stuff happened in real life. I thought those assholes only existed in movies.

    Poor girl. I can't even imagine going through that.
    I couldn't agree more. Did she actually walk down the aisle? Good fucking grief.
    @RebeccaFlower

    Yes she did. He waited until he decided to interrupt the pastor after he said "we are gathered here today"

    What is the point? Why wait till THAT DAY. What is wrong with people?!
    @sarahufl

    I have no idea. There were plenty of opportunities before the wedding I'm sure.

    @hlvonb were you there? I feel guilty like I'm watching a full day of reality tv when I should be working or something, like I should mind my own freaking business about this but I need the run-down of how all this went down. IT'S UNBELIEVABLE. Start to finish, please?

    Two of my friends have had engagements called off in particularly cruel ways.  One girl left her Fi while he was away on a business trip: just packed all her stuff up and he came home to an empty house.  The other dumped him through her mom because she wouldn't even talk to him.  This was when he showed up to pick her up for their engagement party in two days.  His mom had ordered all the catering and invitations were out, so his mom had to call everyone and say the wedding was off.  But the food was already ordered, so all the guys pigged out and then got the dumped-former-Fi good and drunk that night.  Now both guys have found much better partners, and one is engaged again.

    I thought those stories were bad.  But nothing tops this!  Did she actually walk down the aisle? Yes Did they start saying vows? No. It was after the pastor started saying "we are gathered here today"  I guess my biggest question is whether the jerk actually planned it, or whether he was just overwhelmed in the moment and realized he couldn't go through with it.  I personally feel like he partially planned it because like I said in my op "He said he's been feeling like it was over between them since before the engagement but thought that would bring the spark back and didn't know how to tell her he wasn't happy." The second one is terrible but at least a little understandable.  The first is just despicable.

    That's horrible. I feel that there has to be more, though. I would think that unless you were some cruel sociopath you at least care for the person you are no longer in love with. So you would break off the engagement at any point prior to the wedding. But to do it once the girl walked down the aisle? That seems unneccessarily cruel.
    @pinkcow13

    I agree but according to him "He said he's been feeling like it was over between them since before the engagement but thought that would bring the spark back and didn't know how to tell her he wasn't happy." (Like I mentioned in my op)

    I don't know anything more than that.

    Yes I was there. It started like a normal wedding I suppose. Groom was happy (so he appeared) greeting guests. I over heard him tell the pastor that he was excited and it was such a nice day. He had a nice big smile on his face while standing at the altar. His expression or demeanor didn't appear to change as the bridal party walked in. He seemed calm when the door closed just before the bride walking in. He smiled at her as she walked down and held her hands. Then as the pastor was saying "we are gathered here today" he said I'm sorry but I need to make an announcement and then he said that it was over and that he had felt like that since before the engagement but thought getting engaged would bring the spark back and that it did for a while but he's not happy and he knows she isn't either. Then he kissed her hands and on the cheek and walked out. His parents quickly followed him. She fell to the ground. Everyone was quiet for a little bit until people started surrounding her to comfort her.
  • Holy crap that is terrible.  I can't imagine how she must have felt... and yeah... what a sorry sack of human garbage he is.  UGH.

    I have wedding industry friends. So I've heard some really crazy stories. Bride and groom breaking up at the reception, Groom ditching the bride BEFORE the ceremony and hanging out at the hotel pool (how no one drowned him, IDK), Groom leaving the state with all his belongings a few days before the wedding after sending the bride on an errand so he could "escape". And this still somehow takes the cake. No pun intended.

    What a fucking douchebag.

    That story is heartbreaking, seriously I teared up a bit reading it. Your friend really dodged a bullet with this guy but I'm sure right now her heart is just shattered into a million pieces. There aren't even words for how much of an asshole that guy is!

    My heart just broke with her. He is a true sociopath. I hope he rots in hell and on Earth, too.

    She didn't dodge a bullet, she dodged a grenade. I just wish he had spoken up sooner. Even five minutes sooner.

  • Holy shit. That really is insane. Your poor friend.
  • He is definitely a sociopath, then. As horrible as this is for her right now, she definitely dodged a bullet. Scott Peterson, anyone?

  • Holy shit. Every new detail just makes it worse.

    Give your friend a hug from me. Maybe don't tell her it's from an internet stranger cuz that might be creepy, but just give her an extra hug. :-p

    What a jerkwad! I am so sorry for your friend. I can't even imagine...what a coward! How did the guests react when this all went down? I wouldn't know what to do if I were there, other than hug my friend.
    @SapphireCounselor

    His parents (who paid for it all) basically ran away as fast as the could. The other guests were quiet for a minute or so before beginning to surround her and try and console her
    Let's call that a small blessing. I sincerely hope they gave him the yelling at of his lifetime and demanded full payment.

  • This is terrible! And I feel a little bad asking... But can you tell a longer version of your story?

    I'm curious about how big the wedding and reception were, at what point he said it was over, what he said, and how everyone there reacted. Did he just walk out when he finished?

    Sorry for being so curious, but this is unreal!
  • Did anyone follow him out besides his parents?

    I can just imagine what it would be like to be a mutual friend at this wedding.  Um.... yeah.... I'm just gonna stand over here.

    Although if I were a mutual friend and that happened, I'd be comforting the bride and never talking to the asshole again.

  • I can't believe it. I can't imagine how she must feel! Her falling to the ground, it makes me want to cry imagining how she might have felt. Completely prepared to commit her life to this man, and he just shreds her heart apart.

    That poor poor girl. To be jilted when you feel the most beautiful.

  • So did his parents just ditch everyone, and not even follow through on hosting anything for them after they took time out of their day for their dickwad son to waste? They paid for the food already, might as well serve it.

    I dunno, as a guest I don't think I would want to hang around. So awkward.

    I wouldn't want to stick around either. I also can't really blame the parents for taking off. They were probably upset and embarrassed about what their son did.
