Re: Free Cookies on 7/12!

  • @Ic07, partly that's probably because if you Google "petition gay blood donation" you get a dozen hits. Some have hundreds of signatures, some thousands. If it were all compiled there'd be better results. But it is frustrating how little publicity this is getting, which other things (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/324283889/potato-salad) are becoming viral.
WTF?!? That makes my brain hurt.

  • I called them. I can donate blood. I'm going on next week! Also the weight requirement is still 110.

But you know what's total fucking bullshit? Men who've had sex with men and their lifetime ban from giving blood.

I've always hated that fucking rule. I know many men who simply ya know...lie.

I'm in a higher risk catagory for HIV because I work with needles and blood all day. It'd be super easy for me to accidentally prick myself with an infected needle. No one has ever said I can't donate because of my higher risk job.

Well now it's only $15K. It's fluctuating a lot. I think people are making bogus bids because they think it's funny and then removing them.

It was only $2K last night when I saw it, but I guess everyone going back to work needed something silly to share.
  • I'm pregnant so I'm ineligible for a while.  Most of the times I've tried to give blood I got deferred for low iron and the one time I passed I stopped flowing at half a bag.  I haven't had iron issues in years so I'll probably try again some time.

When I was in college they made blood drives part of the Greek Week competition.  Which kinda sucked because people would lie about their history so they could get the points.  Some were responsible and would call the next day to get their blood destroyed but I'm sure some of them did.  I saw one guy get deferred because of his recent tattoo and when he told his brothers they put a sweatshirt on him to hide it and sent him to another station to lie so he could donate.

  • I just signed up for noon on the 12th. It's been a while, but it'll probably be good to get a few donations in before the honeymoon makes me ineligible!

  • Banned4Life.org is a campaign project started by a student who was in my nursing program. Their main agenda is signing a petition, but they have been very active in the local community for quite a while and have now gained quite a bit of national recognition. Just FYI for anyone interested.

  • For those of you that feel faint after donating, I find eating a good meal before donating and keep hydrated help.

I'm ineligible to donate for the next 2 months now.

It's just completely ridiculous and non-sensical. I know I shouldn't be shocked about that but it's really aggravating. And I'm a heterosexual female. I can't imagine how condescending and awful it feels to be someone denied because of this.

I didn't notice this the first time. I work with HIV in the lab. I handle cells and tissues infected with high concentrations of HIV almost every day. I am a heterosexual female. I have no problems donating blood. They ask me if I follow the government regulations for HIV research (duh, I don't want to infect myself) and if I would be comfortable with my blood being put in a family member (yes) and that's it.

A lot of girls that I know can't donate because they have a current or past male partner who engaged in sex with a male partner.

    It makes it seriously absurd.

And somehow people with hundreds of sexual partners are lower risk than a man who had sex with a man 30 years ago once. It's shameful.
  • I just got back from the blood center. They were busy, but not booked, and my iron level was high enough to donate, yay!

I donated Whole Blood, though I was asked if I wanted to donate platelets, double red blood cell, or whole blood. I get the basics of what each one is, does anyone know which one is used the most or is in the most demand?

Can donate again on September 6th, anyone want to do this again?

I'm always sketchy on iron; first poke came in at 12.4 and it had to be 12.5. Tried again (ouch!) and got 12.7. Boom!

The biggest need is for rare and universal types (O+, O-, A- and B-), regardless of which method. Red blood cells are most often needed for transfusions, and double red allows them to take literally double the cells while filtering the plasma and platelets back into your body, so you can hypothetically help 2x the people. You have to meet certain height and weight requirements. I've always been too chicken to try it. Idk as much about donating platelets. They've never offered me that.

I can't go on the 6th (wine tasting weekend before my wedding, wooooo!) but I'll go sometime the following week!

  • I'm banned for life too, on account of have Mad Cow disease. THey haven't relaxed anything in Canada as far as I can tell. Not a big deal though, since I'm a pretty shitty donator. I've been 5 times (before England) and they could only use the blood twice. My blood tends to stop flowing through the needle. They tighten the tourniquet and it picks up, but then slows and stops again. I once sat there for an hour before the Dr. ripped it out. The baggie was only half full. I'm on the bone marrow registry to try and make up for it
