Our flight from Mexico City to Cancun was overbooked, so we had to wait for the next flight out, an extra 2 hour layover. It doesn't sound too bad but at this point we had been traveling for 20 some hours, so we were exhausted. Once we got to the hotel, the guy checking us in sold us on an upgraded (better view, room service, etc). So they gave us a room with a view of a building and parking lot. Yeah no, that is not an upgrade from a garden view. So they took us to another room, with a view of the garden. Whatever. We were exhausted at this point and just took the room.
A little bit later we went to the hotel's beach and relaxed. Well then BF and I got into some stupid fight (don't remember what now) because we were both tired and cranky. I was so upset, I didn't realize that I had thrown my phone onto the lounge chair next to me, instead of putting it inside his backpack. Well we got up and went back to the hotel room and 5 minutes later I realized my phone was not in his backpack. We ran back to the beach, and my phone was gone, so someone stole it. Awesome. I was so tired and upset I just cried and cried in our room for a full 15 minutes while BF tried to comfort me. At this point, I was ready to just cancel the rest of the trip and go home.
Next we realized the phone in our room didn't work, so no room service for us. We went to the front desk and told them, and they said no one could fix it until the day before we left. Great. Ended up no one ever came to fix it.
The second day, I got stung by a bee. Awesome. What else could go wrong at this point? Well, we went to dinner that night at one of the hotel's restaurants and after dinner went outside to take pictures on their balcony overlooking the ocean. And then BF popped the question!!!!!
I was not expecting it at all! For a week or two before the trip he was dropping all these hints that it was definitely not going to happen in Mexico. So I believed him and accepted the fact that it wouldn't happen on vacation. So needless to say, the rest of the trip was awesome. The next day I swam with dolphins, and we pretty much relaxed the rest of the trip.
TL;DR: First two days of Mexico sucked, until BF proposed!

Re: Well Mexico was terrible.
YAY YOU'RE ENGAGEDDDDD!!!!!
Congratulations! I'm glad your FI was able to turn that trip around, and your ring is beautiful!

He's such a sneak. He didn't bring the ring to Mexico in a box. He just carried it in his backpack through the airports (so glad one of the employees didn't snatch it when it went thru x-ray!) and then in his jeans pocket when we got to Mexico. Good thing he put it in his pocket since I went through his entire backpack when I lost my phone!
Congratulations! When I clicked on your post I was like, "I bet he proposed on the trip and this title is a red herring!" Then started reading and was all
. Then got to the proposal and pics and was like :DDDDDD
Sorry for the faces, I don't have words right now. But I am happy for you! Sorry your trip started out like crap, but sounds like it ended a-OK.
So that comment definitely threw me off, because that made it seem like he hadn't bought the ring yet and was just in the beginning stages! But he went against his gut, because when he went into Shane Co (where he got the ring) they had my info on file and it said no princess cut, but he bought it anyway.
Which is fine because I'm absolutely in love with the ring! I am surprised myself but very happy!
And yes I will be writing a review, and calling Expedia and possibly filing a complaint with my credit card company to get some money back if I do not hear back from their corporate office in Barcelona, Spain (fat chance right? I had to write them a letter, handwritten and snail mailed). But really other than the upgrade, the hotel was great, really good food and drinks.
