I like it a lot so far! I'm on like chapter 7 or something so I still have a ways to go. The house was ok. It was a good size and the rooms are spacious. It definitely needs some work which I'm not crazy about (but is exactly what H wants). It doesn't have a yard, though, which is a deal-breaker for us except there's an empty lot next to the house that the realtor thinks is available so he's looking into that for us now and we'll see what happens!

  • @bethsmiles I like her.  She writes in a tone that is pretty readable.  She's still a little too granola for me, but I've found a lot of the info helpful.   I do find it so interesting how behind we are compared to other countries on using midwives.   Here in the US, I think its become more common, but it also causes a lot of debate.  I feel it makes birth plans competitive, when in reality there is only what is right for the mother and child.  What works in one case, won't necessarily work in another.  The natural vs medicated shaming is a little much.

Choosing a birth plan has me super confused.  I even asked fb friends for recommendations.  I got a lot of good answers, but they still were all over the board.  So I'm researching everything.

After reading her book and having a chat with my OB, H and I are still going to go the hospital route, but will most likely also hire a doula.  It makes H happy to be in the clinical setting, and I feel the doula will help us stick with a non-medicated plan longer than if we were on our own.

I wish schools would choose more fun books for their curriculums. I don't see the point in forcing kids to read books that make them hate reading.

Research has shown that to be true. Personally, I wish that using a midwife was a lot more common than it is but I do think what's most important is that women have a voice in what their birth experience will look like. A lot of people are unfortunatly very uneducated on the subject though and aren't necessarily making informed decisions on what they want but instead just go with the mainstream, highly medicalized, hospital route. There is a huge range in birth options. I think everyone should read up on what they are and figure out where on the spectrum from all-natural at home birth to scheduled c-section they really want to be.

SITB: @Bethsmiles, I totally agree.  I majored in English Literature in college, and I have to say that I find many of the classics to be boring, have outdated ideologies, and make reading not fun for young people.  Many of the classics, however, like Pride & Prejudice are AMAZING.  I really do think they should begin to mix contemporary with classic more in English/Literature classes.

Perhaps an unpop op, but I bet many more people would be interested in reading if they got to read Harry Potter or even Sue Grafton in a Lit. class.
  • @loves2shop4shoes - I agree. There are some classics out there that are amazing! Mixing classics with more contemporary works would be a good shift in my opinion.

Agreed.  I feel lucky to live in a major city where there is lots of competition for birthing options.  Crazy that its looked at as a business, but because of it I have lots of options that are necessarily available as readily in other places.  Because I have access, I have lots of info given to me and can research with help.  I'm fortunate.

  • 1. Who is your favorite TV character ( it can be from a past or present show)?

Sidney Bristow (Jennifer Garner in Alias) and  Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan on How I Met Your Mother. Thankfully, the show did not ruin Lily and Marshall for me)

    2. Favorite literary character?

um um um um. I love to read. (though, I read a lot of romance novels so, questionable literature at times.) I can't think of the characters that I liked best right now from them... But I loved Levin from Anna Karenina.

    3. Favorite song right now?

It's still "Little Talks" from Of Monsters and Men. And "dream a little dream of me" by Mama Cass. That's going to be our first dance song.

    4. Are there any goals/plans you hope to accomplish by the end of the summer?

Get a teaching job for the fall. I'll probably have to compromise and do temp work or substitute teach though, if I don't want to just get a job outside of my field or live up to the starving artist ideal.

    5. What are you reading right now?

nothing! These kids are exhausting me and I haven't been reading anything for two weeks now! But I have many romances that I'll be sure to reread soon, and I also have "Art and Physics" waiting for me on my nightstand.

    6. Are you watching any good summer TV, if so what are you watching?

The Assets. It's an ABC mini series about the CIA and a mole during the Cold War. They say it's a true story.

It keeps getting postponed. It was on during the fall, and then got cancelled. And then they started airing it again in June, but are postponing the showing of new episodes again.

    7. Favorite summer dessert or ice cream flavor?

Cheesecake. Ice cream flavor.... sometimes strawberry, sometimes cake batter, sometimes mint chocolate chip. Actually, it changes pretty regularly.

    8. What is bugging you today?

We take the kids swimming everyday. And the pool area is so humid, that my whole body feels drenched without ever getting into the pool. And some of these kids are so bratty. They talk back, and tell you that they didn't say mean things, that the other kid is lying, even if you tell them that you HEARD THEM say it. And if you say "X, that's actually a diagonal line, not rounded like you've done" they say "no! You're wrong!" Okay, the last two examples were from the same kid.

    9. What was the last movie you watched?

I just watched Frozen for the first time over the weekend! It's a good thing too--- all the kids talk about it constantly, and will randomly break out into song. It's an arts program, so I guess that's to be expected.

    10.  Favorite place to go clothes shopping?

Nordstroms and Bloomingdales. They are not my wallet's favorite places though.

  • 1. Who is your favorite TV character ( it can be from a past or present show)? Dr. House

    2. Favorite literary character? Cyrano de Bergerac

    3. Favorite song right now? "River Bank" by Brad Paisley

    4. Are there any goals/plans you hope to accomplish by the end of the summer? Becoming an RN! :) And taking some kind of vacation with my friends before getting started with a job.

    5. What are you reading right now? I just finished "Death at SeaWorld," which was super-interesting, and I'm about to start "Under the Dome" by Stephen King.

    6. Are you watching any good summer TV, if so what are you watching? I haven't watched anything new over the summer, just re-runs of stuff when I get time.

    7. Favorite summer dessert or ice cream flavor? Not big on ice cream, but I do like chocolate milkshakes and anything with strawberries.

    8. What is bugging you today? Not too much, other than how hot and sticky it is.

    9. What was the last movie you watched? Crazy Stupid Love was on TV the other day, so I caught part of that. I love that movie.

    10.  Favorite place to go clothes shopping? Other than thrifting, I love Target.

  •  1. Who is your favorite TV character ( it can be from a past or present show)?

Hmmm this is a tough one. I guess Rory Gilmore. I wanted to be her when I was a teenager.

    2. Favorite literary character?

Another tough one! Elizabeth Bennett or Harry Potter probably. :-P

    3. Favorite song right now?

I've been in a really lovey dovey mood lately. "I Saw the Light" by The Band Perry has been on repeat a lot. I also like that song "Rude" that's been playing on the radio. It's a got a fun beat to dance to.

    4. Are there any goals/plans you hope to accomplish by the end of the summer?

Become BFFs again with the gym and MyFitnessPal. And pay myself back the $1000 I stupidly spent all at once on my allergy shots.

    5. What are you reading right now?

Someday, Someday Maybe by Lauren Graham

    6. Are you watching any good summer TV, if so what are you watching?

    Suits and Legend of Korra

    7. Favorite summer dessert or ice cream flavor?

Peach ice cream amazing. I also like neopolitan a lot. But normally I eat sugar free fudgesicles because they're only 40 calories.

    8. What is bugging you today?

My inability to stick to a strict diet, my apartment not packing itself, and how tired I am of paying copays at doctors' offices.

    9. What was the last movie you watched?

    300: Rise of an Empire

    10.  Favorite place to go clothes shopping?

    Ann Taylor or Old Navy

  • 1. Who is your favorite TV character ( it can be from a past or present show)?

Just because I'm currently watching it, I'm going to say Sheila from Rescue Me. She so adorably crazy!

    2. Favorite literary character?

Grey. . . Yes, Christian Grey. . . MmmmMmm. . . So sad that they're going to put a face to a character that's supposed to be every woman's dream.

    3. Favorite song right now?

Land Down Under by Men at Work has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it on Pandora two days ago. And I'm not complaining.

    4. Are there any goals/plans you hope to accomplish by the end of the summer?

I want to summit Mount Adams. I did a smaller mountain earlier this season, and it was insanely scary, so it's taking a lot of guts to just go out and do it!

    5. What are you reading right now?

Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt. . . It's a Pulitzer prize winner, so of course it's the most depressing thing I've EVER read.

    6. Are you watching any good summer TV, if so what are you watching?

I got rid of TV to spend more quality time with Netflix.

    7. Favorite summer dessert or ice cream flavor?

I've been eating approximately 10-20 otter pops a day.

    8. What is bugging you today?

Boob sweat. It's too damn hot.

    9. What was the last movie you watched?

Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last night. . . Not bad.

    10.  Favorite place to go clothes shopping?

JC Penney? It sounds lame, but man, their stuff fits me well.

I can't believe more people don't realize how insanely kickass Lizbeth is! Definitely one of the most harcore fictional characters of all time. Great answer. . .
