Word Crimes

Did any of you see the Weird Al video about improper grammar? It is pretty funny (Link)

The only part I have against this, and maybe it is a cultural difference, but it seemed to make fun of people with disabilities. Such as saying "did I stammer". The big one was the term "spastic" which, at least where I am from, means someone with cerebral palsy. It just rather harsh to make fun of for poor grammar. It is like saying you write like someone who is "retarded" or has down's syndrome because you misspelled a word. Just completely uncalled for.

As a lot of North Americans are on this board, I just wondered if it has that connotation at all there as I was pretty appalled that it would come out so blasé in a pop song?

Re: Word Crimes

  • The "did I stammer?" lines comes from a popular come - back that people use, "did I stutter?" For example, I'll say "you're momma's so fat" then you say "what?!?!?" Then I'll say "did I stutter?!?!" It was made popular by a US episode of The Office.

As for the use of the word spastic, I personally don't think of a person with a disability. I think of someone who has really high energy and is all over the place. So not offensive to me, either.

  • @LondonLisa sorry if this might be obvious but do you live in London? I'm asking because I'm moving to London to be with my fiance, in about a month and a half and it's getting very very real cause I'm applying for my fiance visa tomorrow!! I've been living in Montreal, Canada for the past 9 years and am super nervous. Any advice for me?

  • I normally don't normally hear "spastic" or "spaz" in terms of cerebral palsy, but have heard of someone saying it was offensive to people with palsy. I don't know which usage came first though.

  • Haha! it wasn't really offensive to me, I don't attribute "spaz" or spastic to cerebral palsy patients. I attribute it to hyper crazy people who don't control what they're doing.

I loved this :) "get out of the gene pool"

  • I've always heard spastic to mean someone with really high energy who is all over the place. If I were to associate it with any disorder it would be ADHD not CP.
