I have a friend who declined medication for her MS. She went against her doctors wishes and went on the MS recovery diet instead. At her one year scan her lesions had actually decreased. Her doctors had told her that the medication would at best, stop them from growing.

She still takes zero medication and is doing wonderfully.

I think everyone has the right to make their own choices about healthcare, assuming they are not contagious.

I don't disagree about people's rights. But I also see a HUGE difference between autoimmune diseases and cancer. They each work by very different mechanisms, so while I can absolutely understand why your friend could eat her way out of MS symptoms, I do not believe and have seen very little evidence that the same can be said for cancer.

  • FSS is pissed at my old coworker right now. I was on the phone with FI talking about her and the GFM thing. He overheard and wants me to send her a pic of B's neck before and after surgery.

  • My mom's a brain cancer survivor and never says shit like that about clean eating and how doctors need people sick to make lots of money.

I like being able to tell people I work for Big Pharma, since our paychecks are paid for by the money we get from study companies for administering and collecting data on their drugs. It's amazing that those people who bitch about Big Pharma shut up IMMEDIATELY when they're in the same room as someone who actually participates in clinical research and patient care every day. They know they're wrong.
    Hey, me too!
  • One of my friends with HIV was telling me about a guy he met who also has HIV but does not take any HIV meds because according to him HIV meds just make the HIV worse. And instead he just eats really healthy and meditates and thinks he is almost HIV free. Of course he can't be sure because he no longer goes to the doctor for blood tests as he believes they "sneak in" new HIV strains when you get your blood tested.

So my friend did not make a second date with said guy and we're pretty sure he's crazy.

Well, I had good news today!  The p.e.t. scan did not show any cancer in any other part of my body at this time.  That means that I probably won't have to do chemo again just for this.  I will have two weeks of radiation treatment, resulting in a sunburn and a cataract - easily fixed in about two years.
Yay!  I can go to Singapore in January.  Boo!  Swallowing all that barium makes me pukey!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could love this 1000000X!

I volunteered at an AIDS outreach center in the late 90's where we had to deal with people coming in off the street and telling us that AIDS was a plague God sent to punish "the gays" (Yay small town Midwest!). I was explaining this to some of our interns at my current job to try to educate them about how the disease progressed from the first cases, the stigma, all that stuff. One of our interns then tells me he heard Magic Johnson lied about having AIDS to get people to buy AZT so the drugs would kill people who were gay. I made him research the history of AIDS, the symptoms, and the treatment. Did I mention my current job has nothing to do with working with people with AIDS/HIV? I just dislike ignorance.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Ugh people and their asinine comments...my folks knew a lady who had pancreatic cancer. She knew she didnt have long so she chose to spend time telling her grandchildren stories and getting photos of her with them.

One night, my folks are with her and a high school acquaintance drops by. This guy is a jerk and very into clean living/eating. After the lady explains she chose to stop treatment and enjoy her last 3 weeks, the jerk started yammering that if she had come to him first he knew of some great herbal medicines and tonics that would have cured her.

He was immediately escorted out by my dad, who then heaped him up with all the mud pie he could consume
  • And in a view from the trenches....there are doctors and nurses who are incentivized to prescribe a newer hiper drug. Ultimately its on them to provide good care.

But I am seeing cases now that would make quite s few knotties angry. Cases of patients getting unnecessary tests , being told the test results are positive for cancer, and then undergoing radiation therapy at rates that fail all guidelines. The kicker is- there is no cancer. It was a money maker for the doctor.

Some of you have a general idea of where I live and whst I do . If in the next few years you see a headline about the shutdown of these cancer cash cow practices. ...look for chipmunk. She will be there, preventing evil chipmunk from going erizabet bathory on the doctors and staff involved

My practice is nothing like this. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

I know a cancer-faker.  She raised over $187,000 before it was found out.  She claimed to have lung cancer because her father was a smoker, made up some huge sob story, and even had a walk dedicated solely to her.  She said her "dead-beat dad smoked 2 packs every day until [she] eventually couldn't breathe for a minute straight without a nebulizer" and blah blah blah.

She was eventually sued for over 3 million.  She lost, obviously, but it took over 5 years of court battles to finally get it done and over with.

In the meantime, I can't get treatment for skin cancer b/c I don't have insurance (and can't afford it on my own...self employed here) and will need to be added onto FI's insurance once we're married.

I was substituting in a high school class back when I wore wigs to cover my bald head.  One of my students, who knew I had breast cancer, actually walked up to me and announced that modern medicine could really cure cancer, but the doctors don't want it to be cured because they make money selling fake drugs.
I laughed in her face.  She told me I was rude!  I kept laughing at her.  I asked where she got her information.  "The internet."  (Of course.)  I asked her if she believed everything she read on the internet.  At that, she got uncomfortable.
"My dear young lady, you tell a cancer patient that her doctors are lying to her, and that her cancer can be easily cured?  And you are calling ME rude?"
The rest of the class watched this exchange in fascination.

You are the biggest badass in history, ever. What a stupid little girl.

That was basically FI's ex's logic on why she doesn't believe in cancer. Not even that the doctors made B sick, but that no one actually has cancer and doctors just make money off of treating them for an imaginary illness.
I'll be sure to tell that to the family of my friend who's funeral I attended a few weeks ago, seeing as how she died of nothing and all.
  • I could mail her my latest MRI to show her what a tumor looks like when it is wrapped around your eyeball.  There is also my original bad mammogram that shows a ten centimeter lobular tumor in my breast, not to mention my 13 cancerous lymph nodes.

I'd also be happy to share my CT showing my almost 20cm mass.

  • I found it very ironic that this discussion about cancer temporarily side-tracked to macaroni and cheese.

My mother had mouth cancer 7 years ago. Because of the severity of the treatments, mac 'n cheese (but only 1 specific brand) is one of the only things she can eat. Literally, she eats it twice a day. (It's difficult to find 'creamy/slippery' foods that aren't really seasoned at all and are okay for someone who is severely lactose intolerant, especially when you live in a town of 1,200 people...)
  • Mac and cheese is should be considered a superfood. Lol

  • When I was on chemo, I couldn't taste anything except  the chemo.  This was for 10 months.  Ick.  Not even chocolate.  My oncology nurses recommended lemon drops.

  • @CMGragain‌ I secretly wish I couldn't taste anything!! I've put on 10-15 lbs since I was diagnosed, thinking I would lose my appetite and things would taste like shit. I need to curtail my cravings before my weight gain becomes unmanageable.

  • I lost 35 pounds on chemo.  I never recovered my normal appetite, but it is nice to taste chocolate again.  Fuck weight loss.  Concentrate on regaining your health!

  • I thank God everyday for modern medicine. FI had chemo in 2009 and without it he wouldn't have lived. I also recently had my thyroid removed for cancer and am home recovering the next few weeks. I can't imagine why anyone would refuse treatment that would cure them. I know that everyone has their own opinions and reasons why they might not start treatment...I just can't wrap my head around it.
