How often do you wash your hair?

Re: How often do you wash your hair?

  • I wash my hair about every 2 days, sometimes 3 if I can pull it off. I have long, curly hair naturally so I almost never blow dry or flat iron it. The curls hold up well for the first 2 days and then I usually do a ponytail the third day!
  • I wash every other day. Any more often than that, I get sick of washing my hair. Any less often, and it's like I stuck my head into a tub of Crisco and used it as product.

I have really ridiculous hair. It's super thick and curly, and if I want to make it straight one day I have to set aside about two hours, not counting wash time, the night before. If I let it air dry, it might be dry by lunchtime.... I' washed it this morning about 7:00 and put it up wet in a French braid this morning and I guarantee it'll still be wet when I get home at 5:00. I can't blow dry and go (although I'm going to try and get a decent round brush to see if that helps the situation) and if I brush it out dry and curly, I HAVE to straighten it or it looks like I stuck a fork in an electric socket.

My e-pics all have this one section of hair showing that I spent about thirty minutes on... that never got straight. Everywhere else was fine, but this one clump right over my left ear, near my head looked like I'd taken a wave plate out of the nineties, picked a spot that would be the MOST OBVIOUS EVER, and just clamped down on that one spot. Thank GOD I won't be the one responsible for my hair behaving on my wedding day. I'd have to shave my head, hahaha.

I wash mine once a week. I love my dry shampoo, it keeps it going for the last two days.

Well my hair is differnt. I'm biracial so I never knew what to do with my hair. Mom washed daily, dad's side said weekly. I settled on every 3 days. My hair won't get greasy but the curls won't hold up well past three days. I can go longer if I wear it straight but I rarely do that.
@Senecaf, it's so funny you commented, because every time I see your sig, all I can think is, "her HAIR!  It's so gorgeous!"

I usually wash mine about 2-3 times a week.  I have really thick, poofy hair and it freaks out if I do it too often.  Also, I'm lazy.

I shampoo every 5-7 days, but I have "mixed", super curly hair. And if I take my time and actually style my hair after washing, I can usually wear it down (and have it look good) for about 3-4 days.

How do you get 3-4 days out of your curls? I need your secrets

And now I want to see everyone's hair.
  • Every single day. Usually at night before bed, unless I've fallen asleep on the couch - then I wash as soon as I get up. I have very fine hair, and even it starts to look greasy even before the end of the day. And keeping it dirty doesn't make it any easier to style, it just gets more slippery from the oils. I use ACV to really get my hair squeaky clean once a week. I also do not heat style it unless I really, really, really want fluffy ends (curls don't stay no matter how much you mousse/hairspray).

Thanks! My hair is kind of what defines me. I'm otherwise quite boring haha. It is a convo starter for sure. Good and bad. A drunk girl in the bathroom on Saturday told me I was lucky to get mixed hair. Her BFF is mixed too and unfortunately got "black" hair. *facepalm*
  • My hair is really fine and prone to oil and breakage so I wash it with shampoo every two weeks. I cowash every other day or so. Dry shampoo was really helpful in training my hair into this cycle.

The Ouidad haircut/method of styling! It was seriously life changing! I used to always wear my hair in an ugly bun or ponytail. Now, not only can I wear down and have it look beautiful (for 3-4 days), I actually get compliments on my hair from strangers! The flagship Ouidad salon is in NYC, but there are certified salons across the country. Even if you don't get a Ouidad haircut, just using their products/styling method might help. There are tons of explanatory videos on Youtube.
  • I wash my hair every 3 days or so. I have long, thick, curly/wavy hair and it usually starts to feel pretty greasy by day 3. Sometimes on day 4 I will throw it back in a bun and then wash it that night before I go to bed and then straighten it when I wake up in the morning. Dry shampoo is also a miracle for someone who has thick hair like me. It takes forever to blow dry my hair so I love not having to wash and style my hair on a daily basis.

    ew.

There are disadvantages to all hair and the grass is always greener on the other side of the hair.

  • Every day. It is so fine it gets oily so fast. I mean maybe once a week I try to go without washing it and I'll put some baby powder or dry shampoo in it but about 2 hours into my day it just looks so oily and gross.

My stylist says not to worry about washing it every day, which I do. Mine is thick and fairly coarse though, so it doesn't really get weighed down with products (it's more of a sponge. It eats product).

If I work out, I wash it. Thick, dark hair+exertion=all the sweat.

For you Larry, maybe you could try washing with conditioner? I just read an article (which calls it co-washing, which sounds misleadingly sexy) about it and it's supposedly good for hair? I just don't know.

Daily.  I have gross disgusting hair if I don't.  I have fine hair and I sweat like a mad man, apparently.

  • Every other day, but I rinse on the off days with just water.

  • I've been trying to do every other day. I used to do every day. When I do it every other day, on the off days I can smell the oils and it looks horrible and greasy and flat, so I have to wear it up in a pony tail (because I suck at doing hair).  And that makes my scalp hurt after a while and it doesn't look very nice.

Argh.  I've been trying dry shampoo on the off days, and that seems to help a little.
  • My hair was always oily, so I had to wash it daily. I have noticed that as I have gotten older, my hair is changing. It has gotten less oily and more dry. So now I try to wash every other day. If I have time, I use coconut oil in my hair (but it takes so long to wash out, I don't often have the time).

  • I have very fine somewhat wavy hair that doesn't cooperate with anything. I have to wash it daily or at the 24 hour mark I look like I rubbed fries on my head. Sometimes I have to do this at the 12 hour mark if I get too warm. I HATE it.

I also, like many PPs, have fine, oily hair that gets so bad after 1 day that it can look almost wet from grease. GROSS. It also is fairly long, so if excess product (even dry shampoo) is put into it, it gets weighted down flat and looks like it's droopy/stuck to my head. Therefore, it MUST be washed daily.

My hair stylist a few years ago would get after me every time I came in that I was washing my hair too much and then give me that same line about how if I went longer in-between washes it would be healthier/less greasy. Tried that and failed so my solution: I wash my entire head in the shower only once/twice a week. I wash my top roots (where the bulk of the grease buildup is) every day. I mask off the bottom section so no shampoo even touches it. The roots get conditioner during the "all-over" days and the ends get conditioner every day to keep split ends at bay. It works decently well...

  • I'm about once a week, but let's say 5-9 days, depending on when it gets itchy and I have time to wash it.  I'm too lazy to wash it more, and while I think it looks a little oily by the last couple of days, no one else I've asked can see it.  I've got long thick hair, and I tend to wash/dry it at night and then straighten it in the morning, so that it's fully dry.  I don't have the time or patience to do that every day.

I do wash my bangs in the sink every 1-2 days though, especially after workouts.  My head doesn't sweat though, just my face, so my hair doesn't get sweaty during workouts.  My bangs seem to pick up the sweat off my face, and I prefer how they look when freshly washed.  My last 2-3 days are usually with hair up too, s I can drag it out a bit longer.
