INSERT FRUSTRATY ANGRY NOISES HERE

WARNING: RANT. (With lots of gifs to make me feel better. So it may take FOREVER to load.)

SO I work in a law office. My boss is in an office-share agreement with another firm, and the two offices share the whole first floor of this building, right? Great. Awesome. We have two secretaries - one for my boss (me, hi!), and one for the firm that occupies the back half of the office.

Other lady is out. All week. She was originally just going to be out Friday, then Friday and Monday, then Friday through Wednesday, and now she's out Friday through Friday. Whatever. She didn't know for sure how long her DH was going to be umpiring in this tourney, whatever, don't care. *I* wouldn't have gone without knowing when I'd be back, but that's just me.

Other attorney for whom I do not work and who does not give me any money at all has a case that he needs scanned. It is a two-box case. I offered to scan it for him after hours so long as he paid me for it. No big. Whatever. After hours, I can handle it. I offered to stay late yesterday to get it done. He hem-hawed around and said he'd see.

image

Turns out, the attorney for whom he is scanning the case wants the case TODAY. Like, I should have stayed and scanned it. So Mr. Hem-Haw comes up to me and says, if you get a chance during the day, can you work on getting that case scanned? I say, Yeah, sure, I'll work on it when I have time.

(Along with answering the phone for the other secretary who was supposed to BE HERE. And along with doing the job my boss is ACTUALLY paying me to do. Which you are asking me to interrupt without any extra incentive, and for something you should have probably done a week ago anyway, and for something I SPECIFICALLY told you would have to wait until AFTER HOURS so that I could ensure I had plenty of time to do it in without having to run and answer the phone or deal with people walking in the office or going and doing transcription for the dude who actually gives me money.)

image

So I'm bouncing back and forth between my desk and phone, and then back into the printer room to unjam the printer AGAIN and I stop for a minute to watch it (cus it's gonna jam again) and what do I see. WHAT DO I SEE.

"File Storage Error. USB can be removed."

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

image

So I finish scanning the packet I am in the midst of (praying the WHOLE time that it got most of it).

Nope. Got two of the fifteen chunks that I scanned.

DOUBLE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

image

SO now I will DEFINITELY have to stand there and BABYSIT the printer, and I cannot do that during business hours because (surprise) AT THIS JOB I AM PAID TO ACTUALLY DO OTHER WORK INSTEAD OF CONSTANTLY FIGHT WITH PRINTERS.

  • Sorry - this sounds super annoying.

Who do you report to? Are they ok with the fact that they're basically paying you to do work for someone else? I wouldn't be ok with that if you were my employee. If your supervisor is all "yea, do it!", then whatever... sounds weird though.

  • Ugh how annoying. I'd go tell him "hey, I know I said I'd get to this when I had time, but it turns out I don't actually have time." And then run away and hide.

  • I have no idea if my boss knows or not.

I did, however, just go talk to the other lawyer and tell him that A) the printer's not working right so B) I will have to babysit it to make sure it DOES work right and thus C) I can't do it during business hours because D) his secretary isn't there to watch the phones, I have to watch the front door, and I have other stuff to do for the dude who, you know, actually pays me.

    Still pretty ragey, ahaha...

  • Not that this helps you at all, but I was laughing so hard reading your thread that I'm pretty sure my coworkers now think I am nuts.

This! Sorry, I thought I could help but turns out my JOB that I GET PAID TO DO is more important than doing your company's work.

Yep. That's exactly what I did, haha. I did offer to do them after hours, but he called the attorney who wants the stuff and said he was going to have to pay for the time it took me (which I was uncertain about, as I have to fight with this printer more often than the ones we had at OD) and the other attorney decided that he didn't, in fact, need them TODAY. So that's good. Although now I'm sad because I'd been looking forward to an extra few hours, haha. Mo' monies.

  • You made me laugh too. And wish I was better with GIFs.

Hopefully you'll get him to pay you for doing it tomorrow!
