Re: Thursday Chatter

  • @phira - I used to like baseball a lot. I grew up a Phillies fan and went to a ton of games. After college, a couple of my girlfriends and I got a package for Mets games just to have something fun to do throughout the week. Then I became a hockey fan and there is absolutely no part of me that enjoys sitting through a baseball game (on TV or live), it's just so slow to me. H and I went to a Yankees game at the new stadium when it first opened and I was THAT GIRL who sat on her phone through the whole thing.

  • @EisleyJoGo I've never had good experiences with running, and I've always gotten these pains. I always just figured I would have to just work through the soreness. I think I will try a different pair of shoes and see what happens.

Last Sox game I went to, I ended up spending the ENTIRE GAME talking with my friend about social justice and baby names. The old-timers sitting behind us did not disguise their irritation that a bunch of Ladiez were distracting them from a proper good baseball time.

  • @swazzle do you have time for a Fenway tour?  It was like $25 but really awesome (and they talk about the Yankees the WHOLE TIME).  I'm not sure if they have them on game days (it depends what time the game is) but I highly recommend!
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • Wow, lots of great feedback about STDs! It seems like they definitely aren't necessary but are still polite overall. FI thinks they're pointless so he's not really on board with them, so we'll see... but it definitely seems like the best option is postcards or DIY bookmarks if we go the STD route. You guys rock!

@EisleyJoGo hahaha thanks! I usually just write responses as I read the thread so I can keep up with everyone.

@swazzle and @BreMR I know! My jaw dropped when she said that. I know weddings are expensive, but that seems outrageous to me. She told me what she was trying to get, all of blue and white hydrangeas:

    1 Bridal Bouquet
    9 Bridesmaid Bouquets
15 Boutonnieres (Groom, 8 Groomsmen, Fathers, Ushers)
4 Corsages (Mothers, Step Mother, Grandmother)
Cocktail Hour Centerpieces (Just two hydrangea heads in a vase; I don't know the number of tables)
    35 Tall Reception Centerpieces
Floral Garland for the Head Table Area

I told her that she could probably buy the flowers in bulk from BJ's or Costco for the cocktail hour ones, and buy the simple vases from the dollar store or Micheal's to save some money, but still. HOLY SHIT.

ETA: She might also want some to decorate the church for the ceremony. I think she wants like 1 hydrangea head in a hanging vase on each pew. She also has somewhere between 300-350 guests.

  • On a completely unrelated and random note, there was a little boy who was maybe 7 or 8 getting allergy shots today right after me. He was so little and cute, but he looked absolutely miserable. I overheard his mom telling the nurse about how bad of a reaction he had to his last round of shots, and then he asked the nurse why he couldn't take a liquid medication instead of shots. He asked how much longer he had to have the shots, and it just broke my heart. Poor kid. :(

  • @aurorarose41 35 centerpieces?!  We had 13 tables, lol.  I can't even imagine needing 35 centerpieces.  I would definitely look for another florist though, that's crazy.  Or maybe look into using a flower that's in season and not from like...Australia or somewhere really exotic :)

@eilis1228 I negotiate with docs a lot about trying to not get needles, so I understand the little kid.  I hope he's better soon!  And I hope you're better soon because doing allergy shots is BRAVE.  I also wonder if a 7-8 year old has truly developed his allergies enough for allergy shots to be effective.  I worry that he will develop allergies later in life and then need them AGAIN.  Oh holy bejesus.

  • @bookishgiraffes - Just FYI: DON'T work through shin splints. They only get worse. I was down for two weeks when I first got them, because they just refused to completely go away. I ran about half a mile after the pain first started, and that turned out to be a terrible idea.
  • @Blue&White she is absolutely set on Hydrangeas. They are her favorite flower and she won't budge. The main issue is the huge guest list, but they both have large families. Honestly, at least 50 people could be cut, but they won't stand up to the groom's mother so she gets to invite 50 of her friends that they don't know. I told her she needed to put her foot down to FMIL but I guess it didn't happen. I would probably send FMIL a bill for the 5 extra tables needed if I were in her shoes.

@aurorarose41 SO MANY CENTERPIECES omg. I mean, I get that she's inviting a lot of people, but if I were her, I'd tone down the centerpieces, and cut the guest list a bit.

  • @bookishgiraffes Shin splints are TERRIBLE! I used to get them really badly when I first started working out a few years ago. I did some research and realized it was because I needed new shoes that were better suited to my workouts. I can't emphasize enough how important shoes are to a good workout. I would even recommend going to a store with specialists that help you pick out shoes based on how you walk and what your workouts consist of. Their pricing may be slightly higher than buying online, but it's really important that you feet are properly supported and that you have shoes that fit perfectly.

@Blue I definitely agree that he's probably too young for them, but can you imagine how terrible his allergies must have been for a doctor to recommend shots? Poor thing. Allergy shots are awful. I really hate them, and I honestly haven't noticed a difference. If anything, my allergies have gotten worse.

  • @aurorarose41 we had a pretty decent sized budget for flowers and decor but $14,000 is ridiculous!!!

@swazzle ever since I met H & became a much bigger hockey fan I can't stand to watch baseball and the slowness of it.  H feels the same luckily.  Even football sometimes can be a bit slow, but I enjoy it enough to watch it anways.

  • @eilis1228 my docs have been recommending allergy shots since I was 12.  By 12, I was old enough to realize I wouldn't even survive allergy testing, let alone shots.  It's one of those "NO NO NO NO NO NO" responses that docs get from me haha.  I use nasacort and call it a day.

I just texted my friend who got married at the Canfield Casino last fall to see who she used. This might sound crazy, but I've also heard of people doing their wedding flowers through Price Chopper and be really happy with them, so that might be an option! I'll let you know what my friend says though.

  • @Blue I've avoided them too. I went to an ENT earlier this year for my sinus issues, and he was the one who told me that I absolutely had to try allergy shots before he would do much of anything about sinuses... so here I am. He even explicitly said that he wanted me to try them for at least a year. I guess he foresaw me hating them and dropping them quickly lol. But seriously, allergy shots are AWFUL. If you're OK each day after taking meds, then stick with the meds.

@swazzle Ah, I forgot to respond to your post about the sinus infection! My bad! The last time I had a sinus infection they had me on antibiotics for 3 weeks. It was awful. Plus the antibiotic (Levaquin) pretty much destroys your body while you're on it, so I had to be careful doing stuff as simple as walking because it caused tendinitis. It sucked. I'll make an appointment once we get back from the vacation though. But they will NOT ruin Cancun for me with their stupid meds! lol

  • @EisleyJoGo@eilis1228 I'll definitely look into better shoes once I'm back home and have access to better shoe stores. But in the case of not working through the pain, I think I'll probably just go for a light walk today instead of pushing it until I can get situated with better shoes. Looking back, when I ran the other day, I really pushed myself for a longer distance than expected and I think that may have contributed too. Thanks for the advice!

In regards to grocery store florists, I would HIGHLY reccomend them. The last wedding I was in, the bride ordered her flowers through Stop & Shop and they were so pretty, I asked her if I could take them home. The only complaint she had was that she could only pick from package 1, 2 or 3. There was no customization.

Oh wait, Albany area, what about Wegman's????? They're the best at everything.

they tried to put me on Levaquin for my "sinus infections", but I wasn't comfortable with it because of those issues.  someone on TK called me a hypochondriac for asking about Levaquin, but it's real guys!  haha  anyway, after a CT scan my ENT said I was having vascular migraines and not sinus infections and sent me to a neurologist.  I am doing SO MUCH BETTER off of those strong antibiotics.  Levaquin is BAD NEWS... it sucks that you have to take it.  they had me take Augmentin and Biaxin instead.
  • @bethsmiles That's great news!!  I actually didn't get hired on at my CC until May when I applied in Nov, so it's definitely normal for them to hold on to your resume until they need you as well.  I just hope you get it for the fall though, that'd be awesome!!

  • @CocoBellaF I'm allergic to Augmentin :( A previous doctor had put me on Ceftin for 10 days, but it didn't do anything, so the ENT felt like he had to bring out the big guns to get rid of it. My scan showed some biological things that make me susceptible to getting sinus infections, so I was surprised he wasn't eager to open me up and instead wanted me to look at allergy shots. After taking Levaquin for 3 weeks... I'm so done with antibiotics. It was AWFUL. I'm glad you were able to find alternative meds to take and that they were able to figure out what your actual problem was. I read online that they give Levaquin to anthrax patients... that's how intense it is. You were so smart to avoid it!

  • @buddysmom AFAIK Wegman's is a Central/Western NY thing, and there aren't any in the Albany area. Then again, I did hear a rumor that one was coming to Albany....can someone confirm?

@GoldenPenguin thanks! I completely forgot about Price Chopper, and will see how expensive they are. And I will definitely appreciate knowing what one your friend used! My friend is getting married at St. Mary's Church in Ballston Spa and then the reception is at Mallozzi's in Schenectady, so the florist would have to have a large service area.

  • I couldn't take the Biaxin, and I could only tolerate half the dosage of the Augmentin.  thankfully, (or maybe not?) I didn't need the antibiotics because I didn't have any infections, so it didn't really matter.  with the Augmentin, within minutes my stomach would swell so huge and tight I thought that it was going to just pop.  it was AWFUL.  every night.  I couldn't wear any of my clothes because I would swell up so badly.

I was on several rounds of normal antibiotics and prednisone/methlprednisolone...  I think about 6-8 weeks?  I really can't remember now.  and then I did 3 weeks on the Augmentin.  awful.
  • Also, only some Wegman's have florists - the one in my wedding location does not :-(

  • @eilis1228 and @cocobellaf it's amazing how dangerous some "good" medications can be!  One of my good friends from college took Cipro (same family as Levaquin, but prescribed a heck of a lot more) and lost her ability to walk.  She has gained back mobility but it took over a year.  Her story is incredible.

  • @CocoBellaF Oh my god, that sounds truly terrible. I'm so glad you aren't dealing with that anymore. Wow. Antibiotics are so rough. :( Halfway through my 3-week dose of Levaquin they made me stop and take 5 days of prednisone and then get back on the Levaquin. I didn't mind the prednisone, but I know it can cause a lot of issues too. After that 4-5 weeks of antibiotics and steroids, I'm avoiding the doctor's office like the plague. I really don't want to go through that again. That whole thing is why you had to stop working out, right?

Oh my god! BF's mom took Cipro and it totally screwed her up! She didn't lose her ability to walk thank god but she has some other issues from taking that particular drug!

  • @Blue the sound you hear right now is my jaw hitting the floor. She lost her ability to walk?! Why is that med even prescribed to people?! I'm glad that she's mobile again, BUT HOLY HELL! That is not OK. Did they sue?

  • and that is why I will always research and ask questions about a medication before I will ingest it.  ugh.

@eilis1228 - yes, I had to stop working out and basically doing anything besides going to work and eating.  I was so dizzy from the migraines that I couldn't drive or even walk across the room without help.  I am so thankful that I am feeling better and that we're starting to see some improvements, especially compared to all of that!  I still have migraines several times a week, and I'm starting to learn my triggers and we're trying different medications.  I have a great neurologist.
