Obsessions

I'm talking my FI's relentless obsession with cars. He watches car auctions and other car repair shows on TV. Goes to tons of car shows each year. Takes care of our cars to an extreme. Yes, for the most part I tolerate it and embrace it at times, but here he is tonight, trying to tell me all of these things and nuances about cars on the car auction show, and I literally just want to scream I Don't CARE!!! But I don't because this is who he is and I love him. So tell me, does your partner have an obsession? Sports, cars, gaming....??

Re: Obsessions

  • My fi has the most obsessive personality, except he switches obsessions quarterly.  During the winter he's usually hooked on gaming, the spring he's obsessed with golfing, and now he's obsessed with biking, as in a two wheeler.  When he gets in these obsessions our life revolves around going to golf stores, bike stores, RC stores (oh yeah, that's another obsession).  I think he also went through an obsession with those car auctions... which is confusing to me because they're mostly classic cars and that dude just doesn't appreciate a good classic car... It's heartbreaking to me.

I tell him all of the time he's never satisfied with his life hobbies, and that i'm shocked he stayed with the same girl his entire life considering he loses interest in all of his obsessions every 3 months...

  • Legos. He loves Legos. Star Wars and the Architecture series to be exact. We have a china hutch that we got for free from a family friend that we use to display his smaller Lego sets, and we have the larger ones on display near the bar area in the dining room. He loves reading Lego forums, blogs, etc. He looks for parts to build custom sets too. So many Legos, and they're so expensive!

  • Mine is board games. I've been fairly sheltered from it though, since we don't have a good game store here, whereas he did back home. He watches tons of youtube channels on it, podcasts, paints the little figures... His game of choice changes fairly rapidly though, so it's still hard to keep up!

  • I'm more the obsessive one than BF! I get really, really into my television shows and books and drag BF into it. My biggest obsession is Harry Potter. I could talk about it all the time and I make geeky references to it on a regular basis. BF hasn't read the books but he did watch all the movies with me so I'll settle for that. He also watches Doctor Who with me which is a more recent obsession. My cousin got me TARDIS pajamas for Christmas and they are the best! I love them.

Right now I'm trying to get him into Supernatural because I have a new desire to be a part of that fandom but that show seriously scares the shit out of me sometimes so I don't want to watch it alone!

  • FI is obsessed with anything Marvel and DC, which I don't mind too much because I like it too, to a certain extent. He's also obsessed with anything to do with Sherlock Holmes.  Sometimes when we make reservations, he reserves it under 'Holmes'. He's crazy.
    HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That cracks me up!
  • @pepperally He is obsessed!! When we went grocery shopping a few weeks ago, we paid with our credit card and he signed it "Sherlock Holmes".  I dont mind when he uses just "Holmes" as our reservation name, but I use to get so embarrassed when he would use just "Sherlock" Sometimes he'll just use the whole "Sherlock Holmes" name. I'm use to now and I expect it, but it was really embarrassing when we first started dating lol.

  • FI can get obsessed with stupid iPhone games. He'll tell me he found an awesome new game, and then he'll play it non-stop for days or weeks. I refuse to play any of the games with him because he gets TOO good at them and it's no fun to lose all the time. I swear to god, he probably played 200 hours worth of Temple Run, and 500 hours of Candy Crush.

  • H is obsessed with Baseball and Fantasy Baseball. He plays it with all his buddies and he tells me every week who is playing against, what players are injured, and how they all are sucking it up! I personally don't care but he gets really into it so I don't want to upset him by telling him I could care less if he is playing his best player tonight lol. He will get stats all day long on his phone so I hear this annoying little ringing sound every time there is a new update about one of his players. He loves it! I don't think he has ever won but he is pretty determined every year.
  • FI is obsessed with Xbox, the Broncos and Marvel stuff, Star Wars, Supernatural all that stuff. I'm clueless. I thought Stan Lee was just "Stanley" like Prince until finally the other day FI goes "NO, it's two names, babe! How do you not know this?" Um, becaue I've never read a comic book in my life????

He tried to get me into some of his stuff. He had one Xbox game that I played for six hours straight the Saturday before we got engaged. He took me to see the Avengers and we have all the Iron Man movies which I like (another funny story, I thought Liam and Chris Hemsworth were the same people). He put some Supernatural on my iPad to watch while we were in Europe but I couldn't get into it, I'm still going to try though. Can't get me to be a Broncos fan, because, Patriots.

  • I'm lucky we share most of our nerdy obsessions. I'm more obsessed with Harry Potter than he is, and he's more obsessed with Marvel than I am.
  • H is obsessed with hockey, playing and watching.  I don't mind it too much but when he's watching games that aren't even the Rangers game then I ask to watch something else.

@Peaseblossom55 - FI also likes watching hockey (Penguins) - it just drives me nuts how many games they play in a season, and how many games in each playoff series.  I'm usually good and attentive until halfway through the season and then I'm just burnt out on it all.  But we do like to get to a game every now and then.  I would hate it if he started watching other teams, too!  That's overkill for sure.
  • H is obsessed with the stock market and investing (which is a good thing, I guess, since hopefully one day it will make us all the money).  Warren Buffett is H's idol.  :)

  • @Pepperally it's a long season that's for sure.  I don't mind watching the Rangers at all, but watching other teams just because is where I say it's my turn to watch something on TV now.

  • H's obsession is also anything related to classic cars.  He watches all the shows and the auctions and I go to the shows with him here and there.  I love a good classic car so it's not too terrible for me.  He had to sell his '55 Chevy when we moved to Texas and he seriously cried because he'd had it since he was 16.  I promised him another car in a couple years but I want Chevelle with a big block...I tell him momma wants to go fast haha.  He also gets REALLY in to fantasy football but luckily that is just a couple of months.  I thank God every day that he is not in to video games and the like.  We would NOT be together because I can't deal with the sitting in front of the TV for hours.

  • BASEBALL. Holy shit. Yesterday was like his Christmas. He was on his fucking phone all fucking night. We had to DVR Baseball Tonight so that he could hear - AGAIN - about aaaallllll the trades that happened all across MLB. He got ridiculously excited because Keith Law (some baseball guy from ESPN) tweeted back at him. I love the Red Sox, but I really couldn't care less about any other baseball team anywhere. He was going on & on about this guy who went here & that guy who went there and I'm just nodding like "I DON'T CAREEEEEE."

H does this too! He was going nuts about Dan Uggla almost being released from The Giants after The Braves just released him this year. But I guess now he isn't...oh well their loss.
  • FI and his whole family LOVE to play board games and card games. Stuff like Settlers of Catan, every card game known to man, all of the 4 hour plus long board games like Battlestar Gallactica. I enjoy some of them...but I can't really get in to the super long running strategy games. I get bored because it takes SO LONG for someone to take their turn. His family is perfectly happy playing games all day and all night and I prefer to be more active. He's also obsessed with wood working, random ridiculous comedy movies, old cars, soccer, hockey, oh...and me. ;)

  • Hockey/ the Bruins. During the season he can't miss a game, which drives me nuts because I'll try to make dinner plans with friends and he's like no, there's a game on that night! And all summer he complains that he can't wait for hockey season. I've gotten into it, I think it's a hell of a lot more interesting than other sport (hello hotties with beards fighting).

He doesn't think we are getting a wedding cake since we don't eat cake and we don't hold meaning in the traditions like the cutting. But what he doesn't know is that I'm surprising him with this bad boy.

  • Apparently a $35 Lego set was released today that FI has been wanting for a while. He just sent me an all caps Google chat about its release. He's so excited! lol

He'll text me during the day, even, but usually that's about Red Sox stuff. When we're home though, conversations often go like this - Him: "So & So got traded." Me: "He's not on the Sox." Him: "Nope." Me: "Does it in any way relate or affect the Red Sox?" Him: "Nope." Me: "Sigh."

I mean, I know the big name guys around the league, but FI reads blogs on prospects and Baseball America, and knows the best high school guys, and I just don't care. But he's adorable, so I let it slide.

  • Back in 2008 when The Dark Knight came out, FI and I were in college and friends and he was OBSESSED with Heath Ledger's Joker character.  OBSESSED...to the point where he did his face up like The Joker and posted pictures of it on Myspace (yes, myspace, way back in the day) and I was like,"OMG this kid is so crazy..." and 6 years later I'm marrying him lol.

  • My BF is currently obsessed with knives and camping stuff. I'll go over to hang out with him and he'll have about a hundred tabs open on his computer with knives he wants that he then goes through one by one explaining why each one is awesome and different and blah blah blah. He will then talk about it incessantly. On the way to work, on the way back from work, when I call him to say goodnight, random calls during the day. All. The. Time. Same thing with random camping gear. Sometimes I just have to tell him that I don't care so we need to talk about something else. So we do for about 5 minutes and then he starts talking about it again.

He used to be this way about anime and manga as well. He still is to an extent, but those things take a lot more time so he gets behind. Luckily this is an interest that I share with him, but he's more into it. He is always telling me "YOU HAVE TO READ X MANGA!!!" and I'm like, "I don't care it doesn't look interesting." And then he gets all "BUT IT'S SO GOOOOOOOD." That doesn't make me care more. I'm pretty selective about the manga I read because it's very mood based for me. He also doesn't understand that I like different stuff than he does. He bugged me enough once that I read 70 chapters of a manga I hated (over 200 chapters long) before I told him I was quitting because I hated it. He was ok because I had tried it, but it happens a lot with ones he tells me to read. And I'll tell him he should read a good one I've found and he'll pull up the "Why haven't you read a,b,c,d,e mangas I've told you to read yet? You need to read them!" It get very annoying, as it's a daily thing.

He is also obsessed with Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter. He watches all of their videos, lets plays, podcasts, sponsor stuff. I only watch some stuff, like the Minecraft lets plays (always with him), but I could care less about the Halo stuff. It's super annoying when I go over and he's like "LETS WATCH ALL THE THINGS" and I have to tell him no.

I don't know how he has time to obsess over all this stuff. Seriously.

Well, looks like I've been roped into going to yet another car show tomorrow. Woohoo! (not)

@doublesSS07 - FI loves all things muscle car, and he wants a Chevelle, a certain year that I have not yet committed to memory. I do know that 427 is the magic number related to engines. I, too, am so thankful that he's not into video games. We used to go to the beach with a group of people and some of the guys never left the beach house, they just sat around playing video games all day.

  • @jenna8984 As a Bruins fan, I love and appreciate that cake!

BF and I have a lot of the same nerdy obsessions. We love Marvel a ton. He's obsessed with his computer, since he built it himself, and loves PC gaming. And he's obsessed with the Baltimore Ravens, and is always talking about "when the season starts..." and "you should be a Ravens fan."
  • @FoxandBunny - FI has a minor obsession with knives and multi-tools!  In fact, guess what he's giving as wedding gifts to the fathers and brothers???  Knives.  I don't know how many knives one guy needs, but whatever.
  • @Pepperally - Seriously! BF has about 3 knives on him at all times (with many more at home). It annoys the crap out of me, especially his neck knife because it gets in the way of cuddles. He says they're all for different purposes, but whatever.

He plays with them constantly, like pulling them out and flipping the open and tossing them and stuff. It freaks me out and he doesn't understand why. And it hasn't helped that his job now includes selling knives, so he gets to play with them all day at work too.
