Closing a thread

Re: Closing a thread

  • Sorry ladies.  Work has been calling.

Some threads just run it's course, even if nothing was against TOS.    The PPD threads or the cash bar thread on E are an example.  At some point new comments do not serve any real purpose.

And I closed the  Douche bag thread yesterday.   No one really noticed because again, it ran it's course.  People moved on to a new thread.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I stand by Lynda's decision to close that thread. The OP wasn't listening to what people had to say and even posted that she wasn't going to post about personal issues any more and that she disagreed with all of our opinions.

When the OP bows out of a very volatile thread/topic it no longer becomes useful to the person who was seeking help. All future posts are just for us, not for the OP. For that reason, it was a good idea to close it. Just a waste of bandwidth and energy on all of our parts.
We talked about this though, does no one remember that or does it not just matter? We talked about not closing threads because the OP got butthurt and left. We talked about not closing threads because the OP just asked for it. We say it all the time, this is a PUBLIC FORUM, when you post on here you don't get to pick and choose the responses you get. If you can't handle posting on a PUBLIC FORUM, especially one you've been a regular member of, you don't post on it. I don't understand what's going on here. Mods were instated for TOS violations and spam issues. Not to decide which threads get to stay open and what don't.
Well and in this case, Doey hadn't even left. She'd responded to my totally genuine question and people were still trying to help from there. It wasn't even still just DTMFA but "based on this new answer to this real question, we now suggest this."

  • We have a thread going right now asking KP for TK's guidance about when it's appropriate to close a thread.

At this point, it's up to the mod's best judgement. Objectively, that was a tough thread to mod as there was A LOT flying back and forth on very sensitive topics and it got personal really fast. There have been several already this week that have been really tough - all in Chit Chat - and I think @lyndausvi is doing a good job with the information/guidance we have at this time.
Is that a different thread? Do mods have a special board to post their threads on? Are regular members allowed to post their ideas on that thread, since it's us that are upset about it?
There is a board for mods that is private. Since it's private, you wouldn't be able to post ideas there, but you can certainly post them here. I'd like to hear what others think the policy should be or how they would handle.

We haven't gotten a response from TK yet, but obviously this particular issue was just brought up this morning.

  • Sometimes, it's just appropriate to move the crowd away from the trainwreck. There was nothing more to see there. IIf someone wants to start a general thread about guys who think they can have a say about their girl's friends then I don't think Lynda would object.

There is a Knot suggestions board where members can post their ideas. Also- reported post functionality is back. That is the best way for members to alert mods to issues so they can be addressed.

  • I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.

Sometimes people come in, pitch a shit idea, and then DD.  People then post random shit, including puppy gifs, for pages upon pages.  Those are NEVER CLOSED.  Can someone explain why?

Because they're not in violation of the publically posted TOS. Oh, wait...

  • Hoping for clarity from TK is like hoping breastmilk will start flowing from a man's nipples-in the 4+ years I've been here, I've never once seen them give any sort of guidance/answer. My preference would be-in the future-for mods to give a warning before closing a thread. And for mods to point out what sorts of comments are out of line-they don't have to be directed at a specific poster, but a simple-"hey guys, let's not play armchair psychiatrist here, let's stick to the issue at hand" would be helpful. I also wish Tk had a sort of Reddit-esque downvote option, so that once threads have run their course, they can get voted, by consensus, off the main page. We don't need another 8 page thread on display showers.

  • WAIT, so now the mods are my mommies and have to guide me away from something that they think isn't productive anymore?  Thank goodness we got mods back.
  • I'm just saying that if you closed every thread where the OP left in a huff and said they weren't going to take the advice, you'd pretty much have to shut down the entire tk community.

I understand your comments.   These types of threads have a way of going around in circles.  Sure it had turned a corner to useful information, but it can quickly turn back the other direction.    I felt that thread ran it's course.
Seriously?  If TK is going to close every thread with a bunch of pointless, repetitive, circular responses, pretty much every thread will be closed after a page.

    Great idea.

Why isn't it letting me quote? Effff.

But as what daria said with "And for mods to point out what sorts of comments are out of line-they don't have to be directed at a specific poster, but a simple-"hey guys, let's not play armchair psychiatrist here, let's stick to the issue at hand" would be helpful"

But why? Why is it necessary? No one was harassing anyone and they've given no examples of anything being against TOS.  So why should they do this? I thought the first rule of TK was you dont' talk about TK.  And the second rule was don't tell people how to post.

_________________________________________________________________ Right. Nobody noticed, because that thread had
actually "run it's course", as evidenced by people no longer posting on it. A higher power mod didn't make that decision. The community did, by moving on.

ETF Quote boxes. Um... or not?
  • I think it would be beneficial for mods to be able to "suspend" a thread from anymore comments. Like, in a case where someone reports a ton of things, the mod has the ability to suspend comments until they can further "investigate."  Some threads are so ridiculously long that it may take a while to sift though.
  • I wanna know how come everyone's avatars are suddenly generic. That's lame.

And @lyndausvi, I believe you're doing the best you can with clear as mud direction, and don't intend my comments to be taken personally.
Likewise to the bolded.  The internet has been around for a long time, it baffles me how TK can't run a site that works properly.

NEW TK RULE: Comments must serve a purpose or the thread will be closed.

    Noted!

Why all the dramatics?    We get it - you don't like what was done.  But please be constructive about it.  Ask questions.  Provide suggestions.  Use the suggestion board as mentioned previously.

I understand people don't like that the thread was closed, but it was getting out of hand and going into territory against TOS. It HAD run it's course and showed that by veering off into an area that was beyond acceptable for the board.  Deleting the posts that reflected that might not be possible/easy with so much quoting available/involved and it was easier/better for the community to delete it to prevent it from going any further.

Sorry but I'm with Lynda/MODs on this one.
  • What part of the TOS were being violated at the time that thread was closed? Or at any time during that thread?

    Okay, constructive advice:

Close threads when they actually violate TOS multiple times, after a community discussion agrees it needs to go.

Remove posts that genuinely violate TOS and let a thread stay open when the rest of the community is not violating TOS / wants it open

Get some TOS that are clear

    Talk to your community

Stop being a website that is notorious for overreactions, ban hammers, mass exodus, mod freakouts, pearl-clutching, unresponsive higher ups, vague guidelines, and near-daily glitches.

But I won't hold my breath, because that's like asking for a unicorn. The mods could only start maybe helping with the first two points.
  • No answer to the TOS violation question posted a number of times here, either. Sorry I'm coming off as snarky here but censorship makes me angry. Rules make me happy. I'm trying to figure out which rule was broken.

  • I'm giving Lynda some benefit of the doubt since she's made it clear she is working.  I don't need instant answers.  But several users all want examples of how TOS was violated in that thread.  If TOS was violated, that's the only legit reason I can think of to close it.
