Question about Islam

I'm not as educated as I'd like to be about Islam, so if anyone has good resources to share, I'd appreciate.

One of my dear friends posted this today on her FB:

"Islam is like a horrible flesh eating cancer, it will not stop until we are dead or we kill it. We must never forget what they did to us and what they are still doing, they are evil in itself. You cannot negotiate with evil!
We must demand our government protect us and close our borders and deport any person who claims to be sympathetic to Islam. And we must put political correctness where it belongs, the garbage."

Obviously, I know that she is crazy wrong about this, but I would like to have some reliable info to pass on.

Re: Question about Islam

  • I think it's best to ignore it - she seems to be looking for a venue to fight and go back and forth, so it's not worth it.

  • I might do

    **Terrorists. fixed that for you

But, she will argue that all those who practice Islam will think this way. Tell her to read The Kite Runner.

But don't say anything to her. She is incorrigible. Report, if anything.

  • Yes, don't engage in anything with her, because some people are unfortunately set in their ignorant ways. A few years ago, on Pride, this girl I went to elementary school with who is now an extreme christian posted something incredibly disrespectful, ignorant, rude and disgusting about homosexuality. So, I went and posted something on her wall, straight from the bible. Anyways, we went back and forth for a bit but it was pointless. So I don't bother with people like that anymore, I just ignore their rantings. As annoying as they are.

In terms of Islam, the religion itself is not hateful, it's actually a peaceful religion. Unfortunately there are Islamic extremists that have their own agenda. I learned about the teachings of the Quran in a world history class back in HS. People forget that just like in any group, there are those that take it to the extreme, and misinterpret things, or a powerful few that can control the masses. It's really disgusting that this girl posted something so ignorant and hateful like that.

  • Defriend ASAP.

People like this will never listen to the truth or facts because their ignorance has already set in and they don't care to listen. You could be educated with a PhD in a topic and they could still argue, "Well the sky is green."

  • Is she a close friend? I'd buy her a book on the crusades for Christmas.

  • The crappy thing is, she's one of my best friends.  She & her husband are coming over on Saturday.  I'm so annoyed by her ignorance right now that I want to tell her not to bother.  She is DEFINITELY a right-wing nut.  She used to work for a group who protests outside of Planned Parenthood, and left that job to homeschool because the Catholic school she was sending her daughter to was "messing up her kid".

    sigh.

I just unfollowed her on Facebook.

Homeschooling because Catholic School was messing her kid up?

    I can't.

Yep  Apparently the morals of this specific Catholic school wasn't up to her standards, so she quit her job to homeschool her daughter.

She's hardcore Catholic.  Their wedding was almost 2 hours long, and was ALL IN LATIN.

Ugh. I can't talk politics with some people. Not because I don't like their politics but because they suck at having respectful conversations when they disagree. We have some friends where the husband is a right wing nut job. Like Nut Job. He likes talking politics and, although I TOTALLY disagree with his views, I like talking politics with him because we are both respectful and we know when to change the subject.

If you can't talk politics with these people, I'd try to do something where there's limited talking, like watch a movie. Or take a cooking class. Or go water skiing. Or do a painting class. Or whatever. Anything where conversation is limited to the task at hand.

  • See, I just couldn't be friends with someone like that.

That's where I am right now.  I mean, she posts some pretty crazy Right Wing stuff, and I normally ignore it, but this deeply offends me.  What she spews is not what the Catholic church teaches.

I used to have a blog hosted by the Houston Chronicle's religion section.  Through that and through my work, I met a bunch of wonderful Muslim people.  I'm seriously offended by her post and am talking to my husband about whether or not we want them to come over Saturday night.
  • You should throw a book at her.
    She sound like a peach.

  • @sarahbear31

I have always thought of Muslims and Islam as peaceful people since in Dallas we have a lot of immigrants from there, I have met and made friends with many of them. I have not read the Q'ran but what I have heard is that it is their bible and it does not condone violence. Of course extremist CAN and WILL take words and interpret however they want.
I have read the Q'ran, and it reads much more peaceful than say, the Christian Bible.

Also, I canfuckingnot with your siggy pic. I just watched it for five minutes straight.

  • I'm guessing Pope Franicis is too liberal for her?  Pretty sure he doesn't have the same opinion about Islam.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    1) I couldn't be friends with someone who wrote that on facebook. 2) I laughed at discussing the ability to discuss differences respectfully while you call the guy a nutjob twice. haha i totally know what you meant but pictured someone like "cant we all get along like me and this nutso do?"

I couldn't be friends with that girl either. Mainly because it's obvious she's holier than thou.

I wouldn't ever say that to him. TK is my little shit talking haven. :) The guy probably calls me a liberal socialist nut job behind my back. Cheers!

Funny you say that.  I just shared this with her.  This was said by Pope Francis.

Turning to mutual respect in interreligious relations, especially between Christians and Muslims, we are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values. Particular respect is due to religious leaders and to places of worship. How painful are attacks on one or other of these!

It is clear that, when we show respect for the religion of our neighbours or when we offer them our good wishes on the occasion of a religious celebration, we simply seek to share their joy, without making reference to the content of their religious convictions.

Regarding the education of Muslim and Christian youth, we have to bring up our young people to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers, and to avoid ridiculing or denigrating their convictions and practices.

  • OP, I feel your pain. I have a coworker who is a rather conservative Christian. (People in my specific field of legal practice tend to be extremely liberal, so this is an oddity even itself.) He tends to spout Fox News talking points from time to time, and mostly we just ignore him. It's not worth the effort. However, a few years ago, we were driving to a work meeting together, along with 2 other coworkers, and out of no where he tells us that "at any given time, there are at least 100,000 young Muslim men in this country plotting to kill us." Coworkers and I look at each other in surprise - mouths literally hanging open. All I could muster up to say was, "No, Jim. I don't think that's right." He then tried to convince me that it was. Neither one of us changed the other's mind. So I just avoid any chance of talking politics with him now. I will leave the room as soon as the conversation starts.
