Why so difficult?!?! [rant; TMI]

So, FH and I occasionally like to get our nether regions waxed. In the past, we have gone to a nail/spa place in out hometown. We have since moved, not too far, but far enough to be hassle to get there. I have called multiple places in our new area, and none of them will wax men (down there). So, the week of our wedding, we'll be making the 45 minute drive each way to the old place.

I guess I just don't understand why more salons won't do it. Like, are the waxers uncomfortable touching peen? Do they think the men will be rude/hostile/sexual toward them? Often times, these same places will offer massage services where the men will get totally undressed.

Clue me in here, people. Is there something I'm missing?

  • That's unfortunate. I know most of our nail salons (the cute little Vietnamese ones) will only do women there. We have European Wax Center by us, and they will do men.

I called our local European Wax Center and they told me they didn't do men. I wanted to go to them too, because I know they have the hard wax, which is supposed to be less painful. It must vary by location.

  • Well, I presume mostly women work there.  And no way in hell would I want to get near a man`s junk at work.

That's crazy! I don't know of another chain that you might have near you that will do men.

Isn't that just part of the job, though? Like, that's what you sign up for? I'm not saying that being uncomfortable isn't a valid reason for not doing it, but it would be like being a nurse when you're afraid of needles.
SITB-------------------- As a nurse, I'm down there in EVERYBODYS neither regions. Male and female. Maybe I should start waxing on the side, since not many places are comfortable doing it!
We'll come see you! (that sounds weirder when I typed it than when I thought it)

  • I don't know about DIY waxing.  Legs, sure. Doing the frisky bits?  No thanks.  I'm too much of a wuss to attempt that on my own.  It'll hurt double, plus I wouldn't be able to see it all the way.  And trying to align it with a mirror is just asking for trouble.
  • I'd have to agree that DIYing my lady parts (and his man parts) is a no-go. I don't trust myself at all.

  • See, I keep thinking I might do this but I'm a baby. I got my eyebrows threaded the other day and had to stop her.

Also - how do you even find a place that does this? Just, like, call them up and say "I'd like to get my lady bits waxed, do you do that?"

I've told y'all before - I may have the lady bits, but I missed all the classes that taught me how to act like it.

Yep, just call and say "do you offer X" and they will tell you yes or no. I was super scared to get my first one right before the wedding but I love it and did not feel like screaming at all.

A lot of places will even say on their websites if they do Brazilian or bikini waxes

Yup, I usually look online to see if they offer waxing. I then have to call to see if they do men - I've been told no quite a few times.

  • I DIY myself. I do the Brazilian. But I have problems with others being near the nether regions.
  • @inkdancer, @misshart00, and @ladygoldfish - so it's way easier than it sounds like in my head then. I may look into it for the wedding. (I'll need that long to psyche myself up, haha - I've got four tattoos and have a generally high pain tolerance, but I can't even tweeze because it hurts. Such a baby.)

  • Ok just out of curiosity...... I have never had myself waxed but have thought about doing it. How much would it cost to get it done somewhere and what is the upkeep like? Also on a level of 1 to ten how much does it hurt.

You know I think me and you might be sisters just by the fact that I also was not taught all the stuff that goes along with being a girl.

Yes I do like to write. In fact my English Major also includes a concentration in Creative Writing. I'm planning on going into publishing and editing when I graduate until I can be an author full time.

I REALLY wanted to do this. Around the time I met FI, an entry-level position opened up at Simon and Schuster in their YA marketing department, based in NYC. I applied - but I don't have the degree for it, haha, I just have a LOT of experience with S&S's YA imprints.... It turned out for the better that I didn't get it though. :)

  • I would never get my nether regions waxed. That area is already so sensitive so I doubt I'll be able to handle that pain. Also, I've heard horror stories of places reusing the wax sticks for multiple clients which is so not sanitary.

Also to the PP who asked if it comes with the job, I studied Cosmetology in high school. Never once was it brought up about waxing a man's nether regions. So no, I don't think it comes with the job. I've never even heard of men getting down there waxed.

In my area, it's around $50 to get it done, then I usually tip. We only go occasionally (read: a few times a year) but if you wanted to keep up with it, you'd have to go every 6-8 weeks probably.

Pain wise, it's like ripping a band aid off repeatedly. The bikini area and butt (if they do that) doesn't really hurt at all, but as you work your way in you get more sensitive so it's worse. I haven't cried, and the girl I go to is quick, so it's over relatively quickly.

  • @cwradford if you're a first-time waxer, try the eyebrows first.  I am allergic to the wax and get a terrible rash from it.  That would have sucked if I had tried it on my hoo ha before trying it on my face haha!

  • FYI - If your going to try this for the first time make sure your not doing it the day before the wedding. Things might still be sensitive and that would be no fun!

  • I get a Brazilian wax every four weeks. The woman I go to owns her own little spa and rents a space in one of those big salon cubicle things. She's fairly inexpensive for this area -$45 first time and $35 monthly upkeep. Sure it hurts, but I'd call it like a 5 or 6. For me it's definitely not unbearable and I'm a big sally. I got my legs waxed once and that hurt more.

  • How long do you have to grow your hair before you should go in and get it waxed?  I keep wanting to go in, but I CANNOT handle the hair growth in preparation.

Hair should be at least 1/4 inch - so that's not too bad.
