Can I tell my guests what to wear?

A guest at our wedding wore jeans.  Absolutely nothing happened, except that our wedding went off without a hitch and everyone had a fucking blast!

Seriously, there is zero point in trying to control something that you literally can't control.  It will only stress you out and make you miserable.

And "causal formal" is not a thing.  There is no way something can be casual but also formal at the same time.  Unless you rock a tuxedo t-shirt...

Omg for the second time people, lol, yes... it is. I see Casual Formal all the time. Google it.
I'm too lazy to Google it so why don't you just enlighten me since apparently you know the definition of it.
When I try to envision "casual formal", all my brain comes up with is the sketch from the 2012 people's choice awards where Neil Patrick Harris rips off his breakaway tux to reveal a spangly purple shirt.

And since Neil Patrick Harris can do no fashion wrong, I'm just going to go ahead and infer that "causal formal" means breakaway suits with glitter underneath.
I think we should make this the rule.

But seriously, anyone who knows anything about real formal dress codes would only be confused by "casual formal" and wonder which it is, while people who like to dress casually will say "sweet, casual = jeans." Honestly I would think you were crazy and then I'd wear a sundress.

  • Yeah, if somebody told me an event was casual formal, I'd wear my darkest jeans, boots or heels, and a sparkly top.

My recommendation, stop using the words casual and formal next to each other.

How about "casual chic" I've seen plenty of guys make jeans, dark wash especially, look damn good! Some even better than an I'll fitting suit! Just enjoy your day and plus don't you want to look better than everyone else on your day! :)
How about she just doesn't try to dictate what her guests wear at all? Unless her venue actually does have a dress code and guests will be turned away if they don't follow it, or she's having an actual, for-real black tie wedding, it's rude to tell adults how to dress themselves.
  • I came for the DD.... And zomg I am in love with this thread. BONJOUR @lolo883!

  • I love you guys' "casual formal" results.

I can sort of picture what "dress casual" or "Sunday best" or other made up dress codes are, but I honestly can not picture what "casual formal" would be.
  • LOL, I also looked up casual formal and had some laughs.

Knottie... Is the word you're looking for semi-casual? That would actually be a 'dress code' ... But again, this includes jeans.

If I was told "Casual Formal" I would assume a skinny dark jean, heels and a nice blouse.
I just think... What a casual friday would look like in the office... You still have to look nice and professional but yay I get to wear jeans.

Does anyone know people that just don't have "nice" clothes, though?  Like, a friend of SO and I is bad with money and his wardrobe consists of holey old jeans, t-shirts, and hoodies.

  • This was a great DD!  When I saw "casual formal", my very first thought would be to wear my nicest jeans with a nice top!
