Death with Dignity Act

Re: Death with Dignity Act

  • Did you guys see this letter? From a woman dying with cancer begging Brittany not to do it and to accept her own beautiful death as it comes. It is written very compassionately, and not from a harsh mean place, but I still think it's totally inappropriate. She mentions Jesus like 30 times, and to me (someone who doesn't believe in that) her argument would have been much more compelling without mention of this phantom who will "Shepard you in your dying".

Yeah, I saw it multiple times on my news feed and read it. I'm just curious, was it her discussion of her faith that you found inappropriate, or something else? I personally didn't find the post to be all that persuasive, tbh.

Yea I guess her bringing her faith into it. If Jesus is your main reason for fighting cancer and diasgreeing with the Act, then good for you, that's your choice. But don't try to push it onto Brittany like she should believe in it too. It's also rude and condescending to tell her that the death by medication won't be beautiful and peaceful like she imagines. Unless you've done it, which you haven't by the fact that you're alive, you have no fucking idea of that statement.

I also was a bit annoyed that her tone assumed that Brittany is not a Christian. She very well could be and is still making this choice. I also kind of rolled my eyes at her plugs of her book. As a Christian, I agree with the content of the post, but not the delivery / tone (if that makes sense).

That's so insulting... her "beautiful death"??? Has this woman, who has cancer herself, ever seen someone DIE from cancer??? There is NOTHING beautiful about it. It is ugly every step of the way. I sure hope Brittany Maynard is spending this time with her family and ignoring all these people.

Reading that letter was SOOOO infuriating. Maybe it just hits home because of my sister but it was a struggle to read it without screaming.

To be a proponent of the right to die with dignity, all you need is to watch someone battle terminal cancer... and lose. My sister's fiance's mom died so horribly.   She had breast cancer, and it had went into remission. Her cancer returned 10 years later and had spread from her breast to inside her ribcage, her lungs, to her brain, to her joints, and wrapped around her spine. She, unfortunately, held on for 2 years when the doctor said she would only have a month. Some people would think that was good news unless they saw what she had gone through.
She was denied disability because she was found healthy enough to work (are you kidding me?) She had to keep working because she needed medical insurance. The woman could barely walk, stand, sit, for longer than 15 minutes at any of those chores (you never think those tasks are a chore until you see someone live that way.) And she was a nurse, so her job was extremely physical.
She was a staunch Catholic and at the beginning was very optimistic about her prognosis, thinking she would beat it. She was against marijuana, in the beginning as well. Towards the end she had begged to die, and for someone to let her. It was heartbreaking. She no longer could take the pain medication because she couldn't swallow. She could barely eat because the cancer in her lungs made her feel like she was drowning.Without the pain medication, she said it felt like she was being crushed to death. (And without end of life care, she could not be given medication intravenously, unless she went to the emergency room). She had lost 50 lbs in two months. She was considered too healthy for hospice.  My sister's almost mother in law died in so much pain. Her last words to her son were "Help me." She died moments later while looking at him. He had nightmares for months after her death.
Just because it isn't your choice, doesn't mean it shouldn't be anyone else's. I believe if we can ease an animal's suffering (and MANY people do), why is it so inhumane if a person wants to do that to themselves, and are of sound mind?) This medication is not taken at the beginning of a diagnosis. It is given to you by your doctor, and you can decide when your suffering is enough. People who are fighting for this medication would LOVE nothing more than to live, but they just don't want to live like that.
