@slothiegal Nah, I don't mind talking about it.
My best guess is that because my sister weaponizes my nephew and withholds visits when she doesn't get her way, they all just want to acquiesce to her every whim. If there is ever a dispute between my sister and I, everyone takes her side, no matter what. Even when she is blatantly, clearly wrong, nobody dares say anything to her for fear of not being able to see my nephew. They pay her mortgage when she spends all her money on tattoos, bail her out every time the flavor of the week guy beats her up, etc. It's a cycle we've all been going through for 11 years. It's just gotten progressively worse over the past 5 or so. Now it's more like she goes along with my sister because she genuinely agrees, not because she's just trying to keep the peace. She has a number of very serious health issues for which she's very heavily medicated, and I know some of them have fucked with her mentally, but this seems to be even beyond that. She's always been a touch fucked in the head, though -- this was the final straw after many years of her being awful.

@beethery Thanks, lady. I spent a long time deliberately single so I could learn how to actually be self-reliant, not just financially but emotionally and mentally as well. That served me well for reasons I couldn't have predicted. :)

Why is it that the evil sister always gets catered to and the good sister gets stepped on? You've seen the posts on my family drama. One theory of why my parents cave to my crazy raving bitch sister is cuz she ignored them and wouldn't visit them for years. Now she's coming around again. I think they're afraid of losing her so they kiss her ass. They know I'll always be around cuz I value my family and I'm loyal to my parents. Ugh.

I'm sorry you've gone through so much shit, but the advice you've given me based on your experience has really meant a lot to me and it has helped a lot! You're pretty fucking awesome.
Every time you post about your family, I just want to squeeze you so hard because I have SO MUCH empathy for what you're going through. I'm glad my advice has helped!

My family has very, very unhealthy notions of what relationships are supposed to be like (obvious statement is obvious). It's so much better to distance yourself. Just because they're family doesn't mean they have a right to treat you like shit.

So much rage. Feminism means you were able to CHOOSE those things as hobbies rather than having your life path chosen for you the moment you were fertilized with an X chromosome.
Good Lord. I'm pretty sure my sister probably LOVES this group because this looks exactly like something she would say/write. She thinks all women belong in the kitchen and their only life activities should be cooking, cleaning, and child rearing. No joke, a couple of weeks ago she said the following things:

"I really hate equal rights and feminism."
"Women belong in the home. They should not be out having careers relying on other people to raise their children for them."
"Women should just accept that they are second class citizens and they should be thankful to have a man take care of them."

I was trying to explain to her that it's about having a CHOICE. Whether you CHOOSE to be a SAHM or have a career, you have options and nobody should judge you for the choice you make. However, by the time that final statement came out of her mouth, I could no longer continue conversing with her AT ALL.

  • I thought of my own reasons against feminism.

I don't need feminism because when I was 8 years old and a 12 year old boy grabbed my breasts on the playground and said he wanted to titty fuck me, it really was my own fault for growing breasts so young. I should've kept my mouth shut, he got kicked out of school for it, that was my fault.

I don't need feminism because when I was 12 years old I received first place in the science fair, I was told that girls don't belong and I made the second place boy feel bad. I should have done worse so he coudl feel better.

I don't need feminism because when I was 15 I won a DECA competition and was told women don't belong in the kitchen, the boy who came in 3rd was made he lost to a girl, he didn't care about the boy that was in 2nd ahead of him, just the girl in first. I should've done worse so he wouldn't loose to a girl.

I don't need feminism because when I was raped at 17 it really was my fault. I was a sexually active girl who went to party with alcohol. I was asking for it. I shouldn't have accused the boy of raping me. He wasn't punished, but his girlfriend broke up with him.

I don't need feminism because I didn't really need to have the right to choose to terminate the resulting pregnancy from the aforementioned rape.

I don't need feminism because it really is ok that I know a guy who does my exact same job and makes $30,000 more a year then I do. Even though I have a masters and he barely finished college, even though I graduated in the top 10% of my college class, even though I have more experience. It's ok that he makes more then me. He has to take care of a woman probably.

I don't need feminism because I'm ok with people implying that I'm marrying FI just so he'll pay the bills because clearly all my education was just to earn an MRS degree.

I don't need feminism because as a woman I know I don't deserve the same amount of respect that a man does. God made Eve from Adam's rib after all...to support Adam. Not to stand one her own two feet.

    These girls are fucking idiots.
Wow, thank you for sharing. You are one amazing woman! I admire you so much right now.

  • I'm not a feminist because I'm very, very stupid!

I'm not a feminist because I don't know what words mean!

I'm not a feminist because I have so much privilege in other areas of my life that my privileged status outweighs my oppressed status, and therefore I identify more with the entitled assholes of the world than with other women!

    I'm not a feminist because I'm oblivious!

I'm not a feminist because critical thinking is so...mannish, amirite?

Guys I could go all day.
Yup, I was making the same comments in my head. Disgusting.

I got called a bad feminist a few weeks ago because I disagreed with a "real feminist" (her words not mine)
I was a "bad feminist" because I support women who choose to be SAHMs and because I don't think every white male needs to be punished for those that treat women poorly.

@KatieinBkln There aren't enough "Love It's" for this.  Ever.

And my husband is proud feminist. I would never have married a man who didn't consider himself one.
Amen.  In fact, as a part of our first date, my husband and I volunteered together at a women's rights booth at the festival we were at.  He had signed up to volunteer before I decided to meet him at the festival.  I just stuck around to help.  We still volunteer together for women's rights causes.  It's one of the coolest things about him.

See these are the people that give feminism a bad name, IMO. So you're not a "real" feminist because you believe equality means having a choice? Come on...

I went to college with a lot of people like this. They were super aggressive, outspoken and narrow minded. And young/immature, so there was that, too. I was told I wasn't a feminist because I shaved my legs and wore low-cut shirts and tight pants on a Saturday night. Please...*eye roll*

I think that might be the only "feminism" they have come across, that's why they're spewing out such bullshit nonsense on Tumblr!

In which case the "real feminists" are really anti-feminists because they're doing way more harm than good, and clearly aren't aware of the actual definition of feminism. Face palm.

  • This is upsetting. These women need to take their blinders off and see the damage they're doing by going against feminism.
  • Gah I just can't keep up with you ladies anymore. :)
  • Um.

I guess we should be pretty grateful that any woman who would say that, must not vote.

    Thank you.
  • @princessofgenovia, you have my utmost respect.  You're amazing.
  • This makes me nauseous.

I grew up being told that we were a family of proud feminists. I got this my parents, gramma, great aunts, great-great aunts, etc. Why? Because our family believes in equality for all. That's why we're politically active.

When I got older, I realized how feminism impacted me. I saw why we need feminism when I started paying for birth control, when I dealt with campus rape, when I got my first jobs- it was unavoidable.

My gramma once told me that her mom told her that inequality - and the lack of safety that comes with it - was part of life. Their generations saw it with pogroms and the Holocaust. My mom saw it with gender inequality. None of it is gone but see progress. I refuse to accept the world view that says we have met our goals and the fight is over.

I can't find the pictures at the moment but I wish I could share a favorite: a photo of my sister, mom, gramma, 2 aunts and I at the March for Women's Lives in 2010. Even now, it makes me so proud and happy when I think of it. Those are the values I want my niece and future offspring to learn.
