Re: need help on wedding gift etiquette!!!

  • I am always late to the shit shows.

Personally, I don't even like balancing my checkbook. Keeping accounts of all the gifts given vs. received in my whole life sounds exhausting as all fuck.

See? That's what I imagine a "hood rat" to be. I am not getting what this insult is all about.

It's a nasty thing to call someone, similar to calling them "ghetto." A while back a little boy was famous on the news for claiming that he just wanted to "do hoodrat stuff" (that's what the pic upthread is from) and it was kind of funny, kind of sad.

It is often gendered (see the first definition here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Hood+Rat) but not always. As with anything that involves the word "hood," it's racially fraught. You're best off never calling someone a hood rat, is basically what I'm saying.

But that shirt is rad, as is @Beethery.

I am curious about this pancake mix thing. Was it actually used to make pancakes, or did you just eat it like straight from the box?

Because I mean...living on pancakes for a week doesn't really sound too horrible to me. I lived on PB&Js a few different times in college. PB&Js are good. I did not complain.
It's one thing if milk was involved and actual pancakes were made. It's a whoooooooole other level if just dry pancake mix was being consumed.
Well yes, if it was just dry mix...that's just gross. And no gift is worth eating dry pancake mix. My friend would get a bottle 2 buck chuck....maybe.
I'd also like to chime in that you can shit tons of vegetables for under a dollar....plus beans and rice are the ultimate poor man's food. I lived on $20 worth of groceries for a month once, and I was definitely not eating pancake mix the whole month.
I think you forgot a word, but I approve of the result.

You can shit vegetables for free, usually, but you have to pay for them before you eat them.

Also I really want to imagine the girl is scooping dry pancake mix into her mouth, then pouring milk in there, then shaking her head violently to mix it up. Pancakes and bonus maybe neck injury!
Yeah, I noticed I missed the word "get" earlier, and then I was like, "Fuck it, they'll get what I mean."  I guess I have to fix it now that I've been called out, haha.

I keep imagining some kind of martyr show of eating the mix raw and in a dark room to save money on electricity.  This is followed by sending a message via carrier pigeon to save money instead of texting.

I don't know.  I have a feeling carrier pigeons eat a lot.  You might not save as much money as you'd hope.

Total thread jack....but have you heard of the professional carrier pigeon races they do?  Apparently some pigeons were banned for testing positive for illegal sport enhancing substances.  I cannot make this shit up.

  • Am I the only one LOLing at the use of the term "hood rat"? It's not funny that beethery was called a name, but such a creative departure from the usual "bitch" or "asshole" lol
I fucking cracked my shit up when I read it. Seriously, the hardest I laughed all day so far. I can honestly say I've never been called a hood rat before.

  • I understand that everyone has different relationships with different people.  I can understand where you might be hurt. Things have bothered me in the past and then when I talk about them it sounds silly.

To be honest though, a really good friend of my fiancé is getting married as a destination wedding.  We ended up not being invited but we would not have gone because we do not want to spend the money to travel somewhere we did not choose or use our vacation time.  This is one of my fiancee best friends too.  The wedding is in the winter and I never even gave it a thought to send them a gift.  However, we weren't invited either.

Like other people have said.. gifts should never be an expectation.  Typically people do give wedding gifts.  However, even less give them for destination weddings.  If I was going to a destination wedding I do not know if I would give a gift or not.  It usually cost over $2,000 for travel, meals, and accommodations.

I guess my main question is why are the only options 1.) trip to Europe/Pancake mix or 2.) no gift and chateaubriand? Did a china set and grilled salmon never cross your mind? How about a blender and pork chops?

What you feel is normal. I would feel the same for what they did. For me, the best thing to do with that is to continue ignoring them. Just reason out that your quite busy and can't accept the invitation. I think that would be most polite way of telling them that you don't want to come with them.

It scares me that you you link some backseat mirror because it implies that you are a licensed driver and sometimes put children in said vehicle that you are allowed to drive. That is a terrifying thought.
