Hobby Lobby Sale

Re: Hobby Lobby Sale

  • I go to Michael's for painting supplies. I don't know a thing about their yarn. Obviously "real artists" can be stuck up about their paint not being super fancy, but it suits me just fine.

You gotta have good yarn to knit though.

Yeah, I'm a knitter and I'd way rather buy yarn online, having never felt it before, than support a company that promotes discriminatory business practices based on their religious beliefs. No craft supplies are that important to me.
I'm glad you feel that way. My issue is that yarn and textiles have a tendency to give me an itchy, painful rash along the hand I drag it across when I'm crocheting, and if I choose to wear/use whatever I make, I get it on whatever skin is touching it. I like to feel it because generally (not always but generally) I can tell if it's going to cause that reaction, or if it's safe to use.

If my options are buying a shitty product sight-unseen online and risk that reaction, using a craft store with ONE policy I find distasteful, or using a store with a THOUSAND policies I find distasteful, then I'm going to go with the one policy and the not-itching. Sorrynotsorry.
    Minor threadjack:

How does feeling a textile in the store once give you a clue how you're going to react to it after hours of crocheting? I know there are certain yarns I don't like working with because they make my hands hurt, but I know what brands those are and I avoid them. If you already know which brands bother you and which don't, why not just order the specific yarns you know you like from another place?

I carry it around for hours deciding if I REALLLLLY want it, hahahaha. That's how. I generally don't rub it for a minute, and then immediately go check out. Typically after I've wandered the whole store, I know whether or not a yarn is going to bother me. And I know, typically, what kind of fabric I can use on the rare occasion I'm using fabric because obviously I wear clothes which are made of fabric.

@bethsmiles I've honestly not sure I've ever gotten the same brand of yarn twice. It takes me so long to finish a project that I typically can't remember what I've bought, so the process restarts. I enjoy doing it, but I don't have the time right now to get any further into it than I am, so I don't see a point in dropping $30 a skein when I can go to a craft store and pay $10 for a great, soft, snuggly skein that serves my purpose of snuggly distraction.
Weird. I wonder if it's something they use to treat the yarn, or if it's a specific fiber that causes the irritation? Can you wear 100% wool clothes normally?

I don't usually have skin irritation problems, but certain types of yarn (Red Heart, I'm looking at you) will cause insane hand soreness after a while. I even have a brace to wear when it happens. For stuff like baby blankets that I want to be durable and machine washable, I tend to use acrylics, so I've basically just stopped offering to make baby blankets for people. The alternative is using a much nicer fiber and trusting that my friends are going to hand-wash it every time the baby barfs on it. Yeah, that'll happen... Parents of newborns have all the time in the world to hand-wash baby blankets.

ETA: You should definitely keep the wrapper from whatever yarn you're working on! Not just so you can remember which brands don't bother you, but if you run out of yarn working on a project, you'll need the dye lot from it to make sure you get the actual same color. Skeins from different dye lots can be wayyyyyy different.
Gone mobile so I'm sure quote boxes will mess up No, I generally can't wear wool. I don't even get clothes for Christmas unless it's my mom, because she takes me shopping instead of just buying me stuff willynilly. I do KNOW I can't use Red Heart but that's it. I really should start saving them but I've never had a project that took more than a skein, unless it was multicolored. And then it took about half a skein of each.
Alpaca yarn has the same benefits as wool (super soft, snuggly, and very warm) but has no lanolin, so it might not irritate you in the same way wool does. It's considered hypoallergenic. It can be kinda pricey, but it's wonderful yarn.

You could also try superwash yarns, which are processed differently, so it removes a lot of the things that cause skin irritation. Cascade 220 comes in superwash, and I seriously love that yarn. It's sooooo nice to work with and it comes in a billion colors. It's my favorite, and it's not much more expensive than the regular craft store brands.

I get some cute yarn at Michael's, but it doesn't compare to actual "good" yarn. Like they don't even carry the good stuff, it just doesn't exist to them.

My friend owns a yarn store/café back in my hometown, so I stock up when I'm there, and there's a local shop attached to a farm and fiber mill here that has amazing stuff that they process and spin themselves from their own animals. Hubby's aunt also has alpacas and processes her own yarn, although I have yet to work with that myself. I'll make fun fashion scarves out of whatever as long as it isn't itchy, but really, life is too short for bad yarn.

What bugs me about Michael's is the layout and stocking. I don't understand why there can't just be one paint aisle or paint section. But nooooo, these acrylic craft paints are here, and these acrylic craft paints are over here, and these acrylic craft paints are all the way in the opposite corner. And every kind of ribbon is over here, except for the one I want because that one is really more a part of gift wrap so it's over here.

    I just end up tired.

Oh man, I would loooooove to be able to just have my own alpacas for yarn, aside from the actual "caring for alpacas" part. FI said he'd be fine with having a sheep farm. :P

Aaaand all of what you said is basically why I only go to Michael's in total desperation. It makes no fucking sense!

Micheals (and for that matter, AC Moore) has the worst fucking layout. I just want to get paint (spray paint, cheap acrylic, nice acrylic, watercolor, etc) without walking the whole store twice.

I thought I was the only one! I can never find anything in Micheals. Maybe they do it on purpose so that I have to walk down every aisle to get one thing, but it drives me nuts! Ace is the same way.

  • I can never find anything in Michaels. Also, they keep the spray paint locked up. Is it like that in every store or is that a NY thing?

I think it's a Michaels thing because it isn't locked up in Hobby Lobby. Don't know if it's only NY Michaels though, I'll try to check in CT.

  • I don't remember ever seeing the spray paint locked up at my Michaels.
  • I may have to find some alpaca stuff to try. I heard tell that a yarn store was opening (had opened, maybe?) in a nearby (...ish) town. I'll see if they've got alpaca.

Depends on the area. Rural PA and MD micheals only lock up the really pricey stuff. Same with hardware stores. 1 county over though and it's all locked.

Also, state laws can play a factor.

  • They lock up spray paint here in Texas, but not at Home Depot or Lowes.

It's locked up in PA too.

  • I went to HL regularly while wedding planning. I'd take of products and bar codes then order online. I won't give them a penny but have no problem taking advantage of the free showroom.

Also, spray paint gets locked up by area. Some areas having ordinances that ban it or lock it up while others allow it on the shelf. I'd also imagine that shoplifting plays a role.

  • I actually hadn't considered Amazon for stuff like that. I'm very clueless about this whole process and definitely learning as I go. My biggest concern about ordering online is not knowing what it looks like IRL until I've ordered and paid for it =/
What kind of stuff are you looking for? I got all my vases and DIY draping stuff on Amazon. I comparison shopped like a MOTHERFUCKER and made absolutely beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt I was getting the best deal on everything I got between Amazon and anywhere else I had to shop.

Or IL! I pretty much only shop at JoAnn.

AC Moore recently started locking the watercolor tubes up, in addition to not carrying the second brand they used to carry.

Those are in Ohio, too, and PA. FI works right next to one, which is hella convenient for me.

I've already sent him on shopping missions for Christmas-related things.

I just saw a two story Kohl's for the first time, and I was thinking maybe this is why other people make a big deal about Kohl's whereas I rarely find anything!
