Re: Book Club Voting

  • I've found that ebooks are usually pretty cheap, actually.

  • The hardcover currently costs less than the ebook.  I think she mis-typed.

  • I don't think I've paid more than 9.99 for any of my ebooks, and they are usually less than that.

WAIT. I maybe paid 12.99 for something here or there...

  • I get SO MAD when the Kindle version is more expensive than the real book.

I have Amazon Prime, so you're telling me you'd rather have a person get a book off a shelf, box it up and ship it to me than just have a computer go bzzzz or do whatever computers do and send me the book automagically?

    This.

Although, Atlas Shrugged is $18.99, and I really want to buy it. I haven't bought it because I can't wrap my head around paying that much for a book that isn't a physical copy. I have the paperback but the text is just SO FREAKIN SMALL.

  • I like my paper books.  I really do.  But I cannot deny the convenience of being able to carry a shitton books on vacation with me without having to pack an extra bag.  Or finishing one book on the train and starting another right away.

I like the book-ey-ness of books as much as the next gal, but I'm also into instant gratification. I just got my Kindle a week ago, but I'm pretty obsessed. I'm not sure why I held out so long.
  • But Fische what happens when you wanna take a bath AND read? If you drop the e-thingy in the water you are DONE. and sad. Maybe I'm just clumsy...

  • Now I'm trying to decide if I should pay less for the hardback and have it in 2 days, or pay more for the ebook and have it tomorrow.. (my kindle won't be in till tomorrow).
  • I didn't think I would like a Kindle.  My mom got me one for Christmas, and I just love it.  I love books, too- the smell and the feel- but the convenience of the Kindle can't be beat.  And it's so light.  Plus of course, being able to get books rightnow.

To be fair, this isn't a problem I've worked out yet.
  • I felt the same way, Lauren, and I probably wouldn't read while I took a bath on my Kindle.

What sold me was the fact that I took three books with me to Ft. Lauderdale, almost six inches thick all told, while my friend had her little Kindle and could just *poof* get another book when she finished.

    Sold.  Done.

  • You guy's should've seen my carry-on from Toronto to Johannesburg. It definitely had six hardcovers in it Tongue out

  • I was so desirous of instant gratification that I went to Best Buy to get my Kindle, instead of ordering it on Amazon.

Totally agree. I was very anti-e-reader until I went on vacation in January, finished my book halfway through, and didn't want to buy the next one because I already owned it at home. I got mine in April, and fell in LOVE. Plus it's really nice to be able to make the text bigger for those of us who are blind.

I also got my MOH one as an early wedding party gift (she is also a very traditional 'book' type) because she travels quite a lot, and she said it's one of the best gifts she has ever gotten, because it has made her travels and commutes so much easier.

  • I read my Kindle in the hot tub all.the.time.  I don't just randomly drop my Kindle whilst sitting on the couch soooo hopefully near water it won't be any different.

I want to cutabitch when the e-book is more expensive than the print.

  • The other benefit for me is that we have NO bookshelf space left.  None whatsoever.  So Kindle helps with that.

  • For the sake of clarity, I'm not anti-YA. Was just wondering. I am firmly boycotting e-books though, so there's that. I too desire my books to have much bookyness.
  • I was trying to balance a bowl of cereal on my lap while reading a book (with pages) over lunch and physically could not do it.  I got so frustrated and realized why I love my Kindle so much.
  • I don't have a bathtub, but I usually do cheesy magazines for bathtub reading anyway :)

There are certain authors where I will buy both, always, just because I HAVE to have the hardcover. But, until we have something bigger than our 1-bedroom apartment, e-reader it is!

I've heard that you can put more than one Kindle on the same account and share books. Anyone know if this is true? If it is I might want to get my mom one and set it up on my account so we can share stuff. We always exchange books when I go home, but I don't go home enough.
  • Hmm...you all make some interesting arguements.  I may sorta kinda be considering the possibility of giving up my bookyness. Next question...Nook or Kindle?

  • I totally read my Kindle in the bathtub.

  • I wouldn't be able to read as much if I didn't have a Kindle.  The Kindle constantly syncs with the Kindle for PC app on my work laptop so at night when I fall asleep reading, I can come into work and pick up right where I left off.  And nobody knows that I'm reading while at work.  Awesome.

  • I'm a klutz, so I put my kindle in a ziplock baggie when I'm in the bath :)
