Wedding Woes

Wednesday will be better

(except I keep thinking it's Thursday).  6let's concert yesterday was a-freaking-dorable.  I'm amazed that the music teacher got 30 odd kids to sing and dance the way she did.  We had a great time hanging with all of the grands too.

Today I WILL get started on Max's birthday.  I've got my grocery list, I've already made the chocolates, and I've got the materials to make his banner.  Tomorrow will be cleaning day.

DH had an awesome review yesterday and apparently my boss has been incredibly impressed.  (that I can find him shoes and book a massage?  whatever, he's happy and paying me)

And a whine.  You can stop here I just need to get it out:

In Sept. MIL announced that they are going to sSIL's homein Indiana Dec 20 and staying until Dec 26.  There is no mention of wanting to get together at any other time to do Christmas or whatever so we move on with plans for bday and Christmas with my family- the weekend of the 20th because there's no conflict.

SFIL is sipping Max's party Sunday to watch a football game.  Fine.  They will be driving through town Sat and asked if they could take us out to dinner instead.  Yay, 7 people on a Saturday night at Christmas by a huge mall is the easiest dinner ever.  I tell DH he's welcome to go, but if I don't have the party stuff done, he's on his own.

MIL has been saying stuff about wanting to get together Dec. 21.  I've told her several times we're doing my family then.  Last night she pulls the "we'll just bring presents Saturday and do Christmas then!  Since you won't be around at Christmas."  I remind her she was the one who stated they were unavailable and told her we won't be doing Christmas here the night before Max's party.  I told DH later under no circumstances is this to happen.  I WILL NOT clean up from all their shit when I have 30 people to get ready for.  I WILL NOT let Max's birthday be overshadowed.  He's only 2, but walks around saying happy burday to me.

  • OMG @ "Happy Burday to me".  That's too cute.

Your MIL... *smh*.  If she brings anything other than bday presents in, I'd be throwing that ish in a closet or bedroom and telling her you'll get to it after Max's bday.

YAY for glowing reviews.  :D  That's awesome.

I'm dragging today.  DH and I stayed up and watched the whole Sons of Anarchy finale (started at 10 and was almost 2 hours).  DefConn refused to sleep past 6:10am (we've been getting up at 6:30), probably because the kiddo and DH cannot be quiet in the morning.  At least the kiddo got him breakfast while I stayed in bed. 1.5 weeks until vacation.  I work Saturday and have next Weds off, so next week will be pretty easy.

Work is starting to ramp up already and we've already got our first mandatory OT e-mail.  4 hours mandatory the first week of the year.  ::le sigh:: The money is good, but the doing it part sucks (it's usually taking inbound phone calls). DH also starts ecommerce orders at work next month, so they're going to get busy too...especially with the business he's in (vitamins and supplements).
  • 6, I really want to shake your MIL.  That is all.

There was a school bus accident Monday afternoon.  Luckily, there were no kids on the bus, but unfortunately the driver later died.  Garbage truck crossed the median and hit him head on, the bus driver was wearing his seatbelt and was still thrown from the bus.  They took him away by helicopter, but he was too badly injured.

When I saw it, my spidey sense started tingling, because I know that area very well, it's close to DD's school.  And when I picked her up yesterday, the first thing she said was "Mommy, something really sad happened and Julia's [best friend's] bus driver died right after Julia got off the bus yesterday."  So apparently he dropped the last of the elementary kids, and was headed to the middle school when the truck hit him.  And not that it's any better when it's someone else's friend/class/school, or when it's not Christmas, but all of it together just seems extra awful.  By all accounts, the bus driver was the sweetest guy.

DH and I were talking last night, and DD is officially becoming a big(ger) kid.  Apparently the accident was the talk of the playground yesterday, and DD knew all kinds of details that I had only read online--it's like she's developing a whole life outside of our house.  And then kids being kids, she said "Garrett said an 18-wheeler hit a bus outside his house, too."  I guess it's possible, but I had my doubts, and then she added "And he said six buses from our school all disappeared on the same day."  Uh, no.  Definitely not.
  • Sorry for the fvckery, 6.  Your ILs are something else.

DD1 starts basketball practice tonight.  She had a lot of fun playing last year and is really excited to start again.

Conn - what are some things the kiddo is into?  My nephew is the same age as Son and Kiddo but I have no idea what to get him.  I really only know what MY kid likes, you know?  This is another example of "I love you very much, but I can't read your mind."  I have asked this kid several times what he would like and he only says "I don't know."  The reason he doesn't know is because he already has everything he wants, which doesn't help.  He's *this* close to getting only clothes from me.
  • The kiddo's list had almost all clothes on it (Nike, Under Armour, Addidas).  Some (insanely expensive) shoes. And the newest Call of Duty.  A paintball gun (HAHAHAHAHA! Nope.)

The only non athletic clothing I can get him to wear is the hooded shirts (not sweatshirt hoodies, but just thin shirts. And khakis (flat front, jean style, but he won't wear jeans or cargo pants).

    He also just wants cash.

    For Christmas we got him:

*A couple shirts (one Nike, one UA, two hooded shirts)
    *Addidas warm-up/bball pants
*Beats (BF special...He has NO IDEA and when he asks for them DH and I are both all , "Uh yeah, that's not happening.")
    *Modern Warfare
*A NorthFace jacket (that I found for more than 50% off at Nordstrom Rack)
*He's getting socks, cologne, candy, and a spork (from the Container Store) in his stocking.  He's been bugging me about buying 'sporks' for our cutlery. (Just to be annoying, I think.)

Just got our power bill...It's going to be an expensive winter.  Being on a power co-op sucks balls.
  • Alright, I guess that's mostly what Son is into.  He is getting clothes, some xbox games and new baseball stuff.  We got a great deal on a $$$ baseball glove back in september.  He's going to die when he opens it.

I'm probably going to get nephew a hoodie and a pair of pants/sweats.

I mean, I'm sure he doesn't have a couple of the new xbox one games, but I'm not spending $60.  Not when there are 5 kids on that side of the family to buy for (not including mine) and 5 on DH's side.
  • @heffalump - shaking her MIL isn't a strong enough reaction. Does that woman truly have so little clue about anything?!
  • There was an announcement Monday that 2 bosses are leaving.  I'm a little in shock.  One of them is someone that I get a lot of work from and I'm already casting about for more work to do.  I was pretty upset on Monday and I'm still worried about being laid off.  Realistically, the only option w/in my power to exercise is looking for another job.  I don't want to do that.  I love my job here, I like nearly everyone I work with and the few I don't, are still tolerable.  I told them when they hired me I was looking for the job I was going to retire from.  I meant that and I still do.  I'm 3 years in...have about 30 to go, so c'mon!  I'm waiting to see how things shake down for awhile before pulling any triggers.

Other than that, nothing too big going on.
  • I'm sorry V.  I hope you get some work soon.
  • I'd kicl MIL in the shins.

The kids learning about things on the playground is such a mixed bag.  (at that age I remember all of us being allowed to go out, as a class--so adult sanctioned, and see Mrs. S's van...because a deer jumped through her windshield on the way to work...and out the back window.  and left blood and fur and giant holes and are damn lucky they didn't kill her.
But apparently everyone's 'show and tell' for the day was "go see how Mrs. S. almost died".  My school was weird.)

Last night was Buffy's Christmas pagent.  it was weird and adorable and for some reason my child had hand gestures that went with her songs.  Either they were all supposed to do them and only my child remembered (possible) or they started to teach them and decided it was to much and Buffy still did them (possible), or she made them up (they went with the words of the song really well though)-possible.

All in all, it was hilarious and fun.
And my sainted older sister drove for 1.25 hours to spend 30 minutes watching preschoolers fail at music.  Buffy adores her.
  • 6---I don't know how you do it.  I'm sure it's more explosive when it happens, but I would be tempted to yell into the phone, over the other person -"what are you smoking!?!?".    No not really.  I don't have balls that big, but I would've wanted to.

One of my old classmates said that I told her in 3rd grade about sex.  I'm pretty sure I gave her all the details and did it on the playground.  You're welcome---little scarred classmate.

I don't know how it's only Wednesday and I know I shouldn't wish my life away, but COME ONNNNNNN Friday.  I have the company party on Friday.  The realtor is coming to our house on Friday and it's just FRIDAY.  Today...I'm lacking all motivation.  To work, to do anything.  I just want to stare at the wall.

Also, I'm so over painting, and yet...still love it.  How is that possible?  AlsoALSOALSOOO---I bought H a bottle of $80 scotch for moving...and I'm going to give it to him tonight.  He was going to buy it for himself, but nope...I Bogart-ed that idea.  WHEE!
  • I also blame you a bit, V.  But I also appreciate that H now likes a drink beyond "the lightest beer that was ever watered down in the history of the planet earth".
  • Yes, but it is such a lovely drink. Mmmmm, scotch.  :D

And now, I want that picture in my house.  :)
  • I'm dragging today - have a mild migraine and took my meds when i got to the office - now dealing with the drowsiness/achiness/heat sensitivity side effects. boo.

had a lunch date set up with one of my friends at work, but she elected to work from home today since she's not feeling well. since i didn't bring my lunch, i'm now faced with the prospect of getting food, which is not particularly appealing in the woozy migraine state.

was planning to stay after work today for the evening class at the gym, but don't know if i'm going to be feeling up to it. taking a rest day won't kill me, if it comes down to that.

my SS handcrafted gift was not looking like I wanted it to, so I think i'm going to scrap the idea and go to plan B. should still (hopefully) be able to get it in the mail by monday.

on the plus side. i took a vacation day tomorrow and friday is my normal friday off, so yay for a 4 day weekend. planning to finish up my DK shopping tomorrow, and maybe get a few little things for Wolverine's stocking.  DK took off Friday, so we'll do something after my massgae appointment.

I want to know where this bar is.  Our 10th anniversary is coming up. If it's anywhere near the restaurant I want we'll add it to the list.

Its downtown next to the Ohio Theater.  I can't remember what its called.  I didn't have any scotch, so I can't speak to that, but the food was good.

Where are you going for dinner?
  • We're going to M...in April.
  • Any Scotch or whiskey recs? I was planning to buy a bottle for DK for Christmas.
  • It has to be this:  http://manifestograto.com/#gallery-manifesto and holy crap, i want to go to there.
  • Barbie, I think Scotch is all about preference.  I know V is pretty knowledgeable or at least she had me convinced of her knowledge.
  • My go-to scotch for anyone is The MacAllan.  The cheapest you can get is the 12 year, which should run around $60-$70 (I don't care for the 12 year cask strength though.  It's too hot).  It's approachable for anyone and a good intro to scotch.  After that, price will start to go up depending on age/type.  If you can find their 15 year, oaked, it's lovely and I think it only runs into the $60-$70 range as well.  If he likes something more peaty, I can give popular recommendations, but I loathe most of the peaty flavors, so have none personal to share.

DH and I really love rye whiskey.  For the most value in price and flavor, it's pretty hard to beat Buffalo Trace.

Goddammit! It's been such a shittastic morning, everyone is on my shitlist, and I would seriously sell body organs or tissue just to have some of the Buffalo Trace bourbon cream in the fridge at home RIGHT NOW.

For the peaty stuff, DH really liked Ardbeg. He likes Glenmorangie as well. There was another regional one we tried at the liquor store and it was really good. Can't remember the name.

And a fun experiment for any scotch or whiskey. Try it neat and also try it with a little splash of water. It's amazing how that little bit of water really opens things up.

  • And by 'some' I mean, the rest of a nearly full bottle.

OMG, BT Bourbon Cream is the shit.  I need to buy a case of it next time I go there. Everyone in my family loved it.

Also, it's a rumor that BT bottles Costcos Kirkland Bourbon.  I bought DH a bottle this last weekend and he said it's solid.  I may get him a bottle of BT to do a comparison.

I want to go back to KY sooner than later to stop in at BT and go to the other distilleries that we didn't make it to last year.
  • Dharma, it's actually good scotch etiquette to put that splash of water in  (snobbery: preferably distilled).  When the scotch is being aged (excuse my non-scientific explanation, it's been awhile) the cells lose water and that costs flavor and scent, as well as making it "hot" (the alcohol is all you can taste, which will end up anesthetizing your taste buds and you won't be able to taste anything).  The splash of water actually rehydrates the cells and gives the scotch's true flavor and scent.  DH likes to have a small ice cube; I usually do about half a straw's worth.  Give it just a minute and the flavor is much smoother and tastier.

Real snobbery: those big ice cubes?  Are actually awesome, b/c they melt really really slow and keep the scotch at a nice chilled temperature, without losing any flavors or smells.  However, they are wasteful and just plain silly.
