How often do you wash your hair?

Re: How often do you wash your hair?

  • Unless I've swam or had a really sweaty workout, twice a week. Once a week if I use dry shampoo. The less you wash your hair, the less oil your scalp produces.

  • I wash my hair twice a week as well and only once a week using dry shampoo. I use a cinnamon based shampoo from Lush and my hair grows so fast it's crazy.

  • If I straighten my hair, maybe twice a week If I leave it curly, 2-3 times a week. In the summer, I wash it more often, but I don't shampoo, I condition. I have very curly, dry hair, and shampooing it too much dries it out. After a non wash day, I'll pull it up or in a bun.

  • I don't use any shampoo at all, only conditioner. It took a few weeks of gross hair to train it, but now it's fabulous all the time! I only wash it once or twice a week now.
  • My hair is super dry, thick, and very curly. I only use shampoo if it's really filthy -- like when I've done mud races or gotten into something that water alone won't get out. Otherwise, I use a fuckload of conditioner every day or every other day and use my fingertips to massage my scalp while I work it through my hair. It's never been healthier or more manageable. I also try not to use regular towels to dry it -- instead, I plop it on top of my head in a t-shirt and sleep with it like that overnight.

I basically never have issues with too much oil, but when I do, I use Suave dry shampoo and it'll get me through another day.

It's a bitch to get curly hair to behave.
  • Usually daily...except maybe on the weekends.

I've always wanted to try maybe every other day but I work out every morning and I just figure it's too sweaty and gross.
  • Every 2-4 days, depending on my hair, the weather, what I've been doing, my work schedule, etc.  I don't like dry shampoo, it just makes me look like I have dandruff. Plus I can't brush my hair when I'm wearing it curly, or I'll brush all the curl out.  In the summer, when it's curly all the time. I'll conditioner wash most of the time, maybe use shampoo once a week.  I also use Argan oil in it, it curls it up beautifully.  In the winter I wear it straight more often, so I can get 2-3 days out of a wash and straighten (I just touch it up with the straightener in the morning, and usually day 3 is a ponytail day.)  It used to be pretty oily, but after I fried my oil glands with Accutane in my late teens and early 20s, it doesn't get greasy nearly as quickly, and it's way drier.

Really? What kind of hair type do you have? I tried to use Wen and I couldn't get past the gross period (assuming it would have ended). Wondering if this would work for my hair.

I've never tried Wen, but my hair is pin straight, moderately thick and really long. I used to have to wash it every day, now that it's trained it takes about 3 or 4 days before it gets oily. All I use is suave naturals conditioner (a ton of it, but hey, it's cheap) and leave it on for the majority of my shower time. The grossness lasted about 3 weeks, but it hasn't come back! This was over a year ago now, and I haven't used shampoo since. Every now and then I wash my hair with diluted apple cider vinegar for more of a 'cleaning' wash, but a lot of people can't stand the smell of that.
  • For as long as I can remember I've washed my hair every other day; wearing it in a ponytail on the 2nd day.  But after reading this thread I'm trying new things!  Starting around Christmas I've been washing it only every 3rd day and it's going really well so far.

  • I wash my hair every day. It's super fine and sometimes looks oily by the end of the day (definitely super oily by the next morning) plus in between working out a few days a week and sweaty sex my hair just doesn't stay "nice" looking without a good shampoo and condition. I tried "training" my hair in college but never got past the gross period so I gave up. Showering and washing my hair every morning is just part of my routine. I used to deal with dry, split ends but after finding a good shampoo and conditioner my hair seems to like that hasn't been as much of a problem unless I go for more than 6 months without a trim.

  • Every day. With the exception of some lazy wknd days. If I don't, I look kind of greasy.

  • I washed every other day for four days over the long weekend and I hated almost every minute of it. Luckily the dry shampoo days were on Friday and Sunday, which were days that we just kind of ate, shopped and hung out, and didn't need to look really nice (if I feel greasy it's impossible for me to FEEL like I look nice). I'm jealous of those that can skip

  • Whenever I can't ignore the greasy mess. My hair likes to play games, sometimes I can go a week, sometimes 12 hours later I'm disgusting.

Usually every 2-3 days with conditioner (I conditioner wash, much less fuzz ball look), get wet and rinse 2-4 times daily (I have to wash in and out for work, if I switch buildings, repeat), and use shampoo when my ends get Velcro prone.

You know I was the same way but as my hair got used to it I also got used to it. 4 days is not enough time to adjust. It took my very fine and oily hair about 4 months.

Ditto to what @larrygaga is saying, I think it took my hair about 2 months to get fully adjusted.  And in that time there were some pretty significant greasy days... But now that it's adjusted to it my hair feels so much healthier.  I do kind of want to try the conditioner wash now that it's winter because my ends get so dry.

  • About every 4-5 days unless I've been in a pool or the ocean.  Even then my hair doesn't look greasy, I just feel dirty.  I have super dry curly hair so it's not good to wash more often than that.

  • One to three times a week, usually twice a week. My hair is wavy/curly and if I wash it too much it gets dry. My hair feels so much better since I started treating it this way. For years I chemically straightened my hair and when I did that I used to wash daily or it felt icky. My hair is much happier now that I basically leave it alone!

Yeah I read where people said they have to "train" their hair by skipping, but I'm not sure if I can get beyond the I-don't-feel-clean-nobody-look-at-me-please stage, mostly because of my Monday thru Friday 9 to 5 work schedule. I don't wanna feel like that at work. If I worked from home or could like hide out for a while... it might work.

I understand! It's tough to do, especially when you work and stuff.
