I still keep writing the wrong initials.

Getting used to a new name is harder than I thought. Every time I have to initial something (which is very often at work), I write RG instead of RF. Dur dur dur. It's been 4 months. You'd think I'd be caught up by now.

Re: I still keep writing the wrong initials.

  • I'm still typing 2014 on everything. Driving me nuts at work.

I have no idea how ill get through having to initial and signature a new name!

  • I haven't gotten married yet, but the idea of this has plagued me lol...  How do you undo all those years of signing your name one way.  I didn't change my name in my first marriage but will now and since my legal name is so f'ing long I'm going to cut everything out and just do my first name, maiden and married.  My two middle names have to go!

  • I always do a double take any time I have to give my name, like for an appointment. "L! No wait, S! No, when did I make this appointment? I don't know who you have me down as."

I haven't changed my name on my CCs yet, so I still get away with signing my maiden name.

  • Me too!! I have to initial a million things at work and I didn't make the full switch over until December (married in Sept) and I still forget here & there. My signature since I was 13 has been my first initial, last initial, squiggle and then exagerrated last latter of my last name. It's SUCH a hard habit to break! When I got my new license at the DMV, I literally didn't know how to sign it so I printed my new initials in the box, didn't even attempt a signature hahaha.

I work with a lot of people in our other offices all over the world who have never met me, we just email daily. So they were confused for a long time and kept asking where the other Jenna went.

@lolo883 Same! Dentist and pharmacy looks at me like I'm crazy when I'm like "I don't know my last name, well I do, but I don't know which one you have."

  • I like my initials, I'm TP. After I get married I'll be TS. Gross, sounds like an infection. And TPS sounds like some sort of yucky work status report. I don't think I'll get used to my new initials, either!

When we went a few weeks ago to buy the brand new truck I asked my brother (the salesman) if I could put the down payment on my credit card to get the rewards points instead of a check. He said yes and he got the manager to approve double their CC limit (because they have to pay a percentage in fees so they don't like to allow over a certain amount). My brother said when you go in with the finance manager do not tell him we are related. I plopped my card down on the desk and DH looked at me in sheer horror that it was going to have my brother's last name on it, but luckily I had already switched it over lol.

I've had people ask for ID when paying with my credit card, and I show them my license with a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LAST NAME and they don't even bat an eye.

I went in to change my last name on my social security card today and dude didn't even ask for my ID or any other form of verification that I was the person listed on my marriage license before changing my name on my SS card. Guess I look trustworthy?

I'm super lucky that my initials didn't change...win.

Me too!  Same initials makes life easier.

But, even after over 6 months I'm still at that stage where I have maiden name on some things and married name on some things.  I've changed it on social security, drivers license, and all our bank accounts.  But, I haven't changed it at work, medical stuff, or all our bills yet.  So, I do have occasions where I'm not sure which name they have on file or I put the wrong name.  At work, I still just haven't gotten around to changing my professional licensing stuff, so my maiden name is still used until I get that changed. For medical, I've been trying to wait until I had a break without medical appointments, so I don't need to deal with bills getting denied because of wrong name. But, I've been doing physical therapy for last 3 months.  I'm almost done with that, then I think I'll have an open time frame with no conflicts.

  • I'm not looking forward to signing my new name once I change it at the end of this month.I have a very unique/long last maiden name and I've perfected the art of my signature.

I'm the opposite! They already changed all my stuff at work and I haven't even gotten the marriage license back yet to go to the SS office.

For signing my name, I have found that if I sign maiden name, it is very easy to convert it to my new last name.  My maiden name was short and if I accidentally sign with maiden name, I have figured out how to convert the remaining letters into my married name without it being too noticeable.  It's super convenient.

I totally practiced my signature before. I had to figure out one that I liked.

  • My signature is already an unreadable mess (I blame my father. He was a dentist), so I doubt getting married will change that for me.

My new initials will be RC...cola.

  • I've been practicing mine already, mostly because I can barely spell my future last name unless I really think about it, but I realized it's probably unnecessary as my signature is already totally illegible. I could change the initial "A" in my surname that's sort of visible into a "W" and no one will ever know.

For initials I'm going to have MW, which pleases me thanks to the symmetry of the letters. It'll look way prettier than my old MA, which looks awkward in cursive.

  • My initials are staying the same. My name is fairly long, so I just sign everything EMR with some swashy shit and call it good.

Changing all my vendor accounts is going to be a shitshow though uuuugh.

I'm right there with you!  The upcoming new last name feels so weird to sign - I gotta get used to it!

  • I am going from a fairly easy Irish last name to a long last name with lots of "i's" and "e's"- and a "ski" on the end (FI is Polish and Italian).  I have resigned myself to having to spell out my last name for the rest of my life.  Le sigh.  :)

I'll have to practice a signature, too- good idea!
  • I miss signing my old last name. It was short and mostly e's and l's so I would just make a bunch of loops and finish with a little flourish. My new last name doesn't have that luxury so I'm gonna do what H does - make a really pretty B and scribble the rest. I'm happy with my new initials however - CB instead of CK.

  • One of my favorite stories- my friend let me use her gym membership card. There was never anyone at the desk. One day, there was a guy at the desk so when I swiped it, friend's pic popped up on his screen. He asked me what my name was and I said her name. He smirked and said "spell that". It was a weird Romanian name with random silent I's, so I said "S-T- uuummm, I just got married so I haven't learned it yet". He laughed and let me go in even though he knew I was lying.

  • I get married in April, and my new initials will be SMM.

So of course I have to say, 'mmmmmmmmmm' at the end.

  • Haha. I am having the same problem. I had an illegable signiture before, so in a hurry I'll just change the first letter of my last name and add an h somewhere in the middle, it's close enough.

It's only been a few months, I'm sure I'll get used to it. Maybe I should start writing my new name slowly and let it develop into what it will.

I'm going from a super common and straightforward surname to a Polish "-ski" too, and it is legitimately kind of a worry for me because I know I'm going to misspell it when I try to do it aloud. I can do it when I'm practicing but the first time someone asks me for real I'm probably going to draw a blank, haha.

  • I've been pretty good lately but I sometimes still auto sign as KW instead of KR. I have to initial paperwork dozens of times a day so the first week after we got back to work was a nightmare of going back and forth.

I loved my old signature. I still haven't perfected the new one.
