Who else is re-watching Friends?

Re: Who else is re-watching Friends?

  • The hilarious thing though, is that often you can see the outline of the bra, too.  Not quoting bc it's so long, but the "Knows nipples are on show/ still doesn't wear a bra" meme, you can totally see her bra too.  It's like they buy the thinnest bras possible on purpose.

Mysteries of life I will never answer...
I watched an episode where she pulled out one of her bras and it was extremely thin. Like, there's no way I could wear a bra that thin under clothes. I of course thought of this thread, lol

  • I never realized how often you can see the nipples. I think we are on season 4 right now and holy wow. I didn't see the first few seasons that many times so I have forgotten a lot of plot points earlier on. I've always loved the show so it will be great to be able to have it on in the background now!

I watched the pilot a few days ago WTF was up with Monica's suspender outfit?  Really?  That was their opening outfit for her?

If that boobs comment was directed at me, I never said I wasn't the one looking.  I think boobs are great.
It was the style then, though Monica's is pretty ugly imho. BH 90210 had Tori spelling wear a more fashionable version, and I had a skirt/ shirt suspender outfit when I was like 12-13, right when Friends started.

I just started watching friends today, and I can't believe I didn't notice nipples yet! I keep getting distracted by Rachel's tiny waist. It took me an episode or two to get over the laugh track (or live audience? can't tell) but I think I'm past it. I have a pet peeve with laugh tracks.

Great show, though. I'm determined to fully enjoy this snowy Saturday by not getting out of bed.
It was filmed in front of a live audience.  I've seen every episode a million times, and I watch it pretty much every night. Yes, the nipples are pretty obvious.

I agree with lurker girl, that Chandler is more traumatized by his dad leaving their family, and his dad becoming a drag queen. He's embarrassed by it, because it's his dad. I never thought about him being homophobic.

There is a scene during the episode Monica and Chandler get married, and Chandler's freaking out. Ross is like, "have you ever worn a black cocktail dress and tried to make out with me. No. Then you are neither of your parents". Come on that's funny!

We also have to remember that it wasn't until 1997, 3 years after Friends started, when Ellen (the character) became the first openly gay lead character on TV. The times have changed now, and hopefully people are more sensitive.

I saw the first couple seasons during high school and then lost track of it. I watched the final season when Netflix had the DVDs back in 2007, and I've seen some episodes here and there during late-night reruns.

So, I started watching them from the beginning. I just started Season 7. Monica and Chandler are planning their wedding.

    I've realized a few things:

    1) I still hate Ross. I want to mute him every time he talks. He is so fucking whiny and pathetic. Just stop already.

    2) I always thought Joey was super dumb back in the day, but now I see him more as that lovable puppy or younger brother. I've warmed to him big time.

    3) Rachel only wants Ross when he's with someone else. My friend said it fits Rachel's "princess" personality, i.e. she only wants what she can't have. I'm already sick and tired of the will-they/won't-they, and I'm annoyed that I already know they're going to end up back together. I wish that last fight/whatever would have ended it for good. Lobsters, be damned.

    4) I've always loved Chandler. :)

    5) Phoebe's character is more tolerable this time around, but I really, really, really hate when she sings. I know that's a comedic part of the plot, but ugh. Stop. Just stop.

    6) Monica keeps getting louder and louder. I thought she was adorable at first, but now she gets on my nerves. Calm the fuck down, and stop bossing everyone around. She went from neurotic to insufferable over the course of a couple seasons. I didn't really notice it until Season Six.
  • Chandler was behind the times and unpleasantly homophobic in the 90's at first airing of friends. But that is a regionally based judgement. Where my sister lived in rural OK for 2 years people are so homophobic they are ridiculous, and the common perception is that all homosexual males are also pedophiles and aggressively seek to corrupt your children. (less true in cities and some student areas of OK.). So on national television series maybe they were deliberately less gay friendly to keep national advertising money.
What? No. Just. That is a lot of assumptions. Such a nice thing to say about an entire state too.

  • Dammit now all I can see when I watch are the nipples. Plus it makes me want to dig out my Sex and the City DVDs and watch that episode where Samantha gets fake nipples to pick up guys because apparently "nipples are in"... Well they were at the time anyway.

This was totally what I thought of when I saw Jennifer Anniston's nipples showing on Friends!

  • Lolo 883 "Maybe they're bras with built in plastic nips, to ensure adequate nippage at all times."

I am sure they are not her real ones. To film for the time it takes for scenes to be just right takes a long time and nipples only stay erect when stimulated -too long a time.- or with prolonged cold, and she would show gooseflesh wearing a sleeveless tee that long, and blue lips would ruin her makeup.

You put a lot of thought into this.

The nipples thing was noticed by everyone I know during the very first airings. More than 15 years ago.
I am probably older than a lot of you . I'm 35. Old enough to have seen it the mid nineties airing, not yet senile enough to have forgotten.

O.o I'd say most people on this forum are in their 30s or older.

  • Holy crap the nipples. I can't believe they just let them be out there like that.

I also am super surprised by the fashion. Of course lots of it is super ugly, but I didn't remember how many "costumes" they dressed Rachel up in. She was basically wearing a Catholic schoolgirl outfit in one of the episodes for no reason.

    I just turned 38.
  • Then you understand I did not have to put a whole lot of thought into it, as lolo883 described it. Because during the first airing, as you remember, it was a hot topic.

Not really. Most people I knew discussed how annoying Ross was or how bad Phoebe's singing was. I didn't even know the nipples were a "thing" until this thread.

Plus, I only saw the first couple seasons. Once I left for college, "X-Files" was my thing.
  • I don't know that I've ever seen a full episode of Friends. But I'm fascinated by the nipples (…as is DH).

Still a weirdly detailed answer to a not at all serious topic, like most of your posts.

  • I never really liked the whole show, just certain bits.

But so many friends and roommates did, So real drama queen friend and I would watch too, or watch it later on tape so we could criticize to our heart's content without disturbing real fans. Rachael and her clothes were food for lots of fun, and the fako nipples. And how many scenes, how many people with really bad contorted posture that would make most of us ache. Why did the producers think everyone had to slouch into soft furniture, and why couldn't Jason Alexander gesture with his hands instead of doing whole arm movements from the shoulder, like a toddler. And of course the jumping up and down in shoes so hard on the spine. Not to mention that whenever a guy had a misbuttoned or half I tucked shirt, it was always the same side up vs down. Did a person stand offstage or in wardrobe with the job of ensuring consistency in sloppy dress
    ?
( My friend said they probably had a policy, so that episodes shot in the set with characters coming and going and maybe hitting the bathroom quick would always be badly dressed exactly the same when they came in again ten minutes later.)
We actually watched a random bunch of tapes on advanced speed to check, one snow day when classes were cancelled.

Now that is trivia right up there with the great nipple hunt.

To be fair, you posted several rather passionate posts about random Friends stuff that I don't think a ton of people noticed.

Yep. Phoebe was possessed, and the officiant was played by Newt Gingrich's sister.

Yes! I remember the clothes the lesbians wore too. And the hats. It was very 90s.

I'll be 35 this year. I don't remember anyone talking about this "hot topic" ever.

  • Between re-watching this and Buffy, the fashion is driving me nuts!!  I know a lot of people say the 80s were the worst, but I think the 90's had the worst fashion.  Everything looks like a kindergardener made it, and most of the clothing looks like someone stole their grandmother's curtain and the upholstery off the couch.

Not to mention pretty much everything is literally THE MOST UNFLATTERING SHAPE POSSIBLE for that person's body.  They're just like "Oh, this shirt makes me look like I am both pregnant and flat-chested even though I'm not pregnant and have boobs...  IT'S PERFECT OMG"

And Ross is a fucking douche.  I just watched the episode where he flat out slut shamed Rachel over ONE guy and am still disappointed that he wasn't killed off by Rachel throwing him out the fucking window.   And I was already peeved with his whole "Tattoos ruin your body" bullshit.  And also peeved by the multiple "Well can't you just stop being a lesbian?" remarks to his ex wife.  I don't even feel bad when he's being a whiny bitch, I'm just like "GOOD, FEEL BAD.  YOU'RE A DOUCHE."  He's the worst kind of douche too, the kind who sits around thinking that they're such a nice and sweet guy and is in complete denial that they are a douche, even though they are judgmental as all hell and act like a whiny baby when they don't get their way.
Ross is  definitely the worst Friend.
