Happy Monday

How was your weekend? What is new?

Mine was good. I bought my nephew an awesome new Tom Brady shirt on Saturday. My bro and his wife are NEVER appreciative of anything so I went out on a limb and asked his ex wife (nephew's mom) if I could bring it over to her house. I have barely seen her in years since the divorce. I went over there and I'm glad I did- she was super nice, and super appreciative and posted a cute thank you on FB.

We got about 5 inches of snow last night and it's coming down all day- so I'm working from home for the 5th day- I haven't been in the office since last Monday. My last job didn't have this option, so it's very exciting.

And what the fuck was with all the depressing Super Bowl ads?!?!? Jesus- the Nationwide dead children, the pizza domestic abuse, there were so many weird/ sad ads and barely any funny ones. I think the only ones I laughed at were Liam Neeson and Draft pick avocado!

Re: Happy Monday

  • I'm in such a sour mood today, and I can't shake it.

H was sick AGAIN. I don't know what's going on because he never gets sick. But I had another weekend of him laying in bed whining and moaning.

Saturday we had game night at my friend's house. That was fun.

And that Nationwide commercial was awful. WTF?
  • I had a busy weekend! Hockey game Friday for H's birthday. Saturday we  got ready for the Super Bowl party and cleaned and cooked and stuff.

I was so disappointed in the ending of the Super Bowl...I wanted the Seahawks to win and I love Russel Wilson but that was an awful last play. The game was so good though, much  better than last year.

And yes, the commercials were all so sad. There were maybe 2 funny ones.

  • Weekend had its moments. Friday night was great. Got my hair done, my ring appraised so I can finally get it ensured, and FI and I went to Chili's so he could try out the new Dr. Pepper ribs. He approved. I had a margarita, so that was fun for me.

Saturday his sister came over and we did our STD photos. They came out pretty good! After seeing some of the engagement photos on here I'm realizing the benefit of hiring an actual professional wedding photographer, so I'm glad we hired one for our wedding, but for just a few pretty shots we got some good stuff.

Also on Saturday our landlord sent over a plumber to look at our kitchen sink, which has been clogging up pretty bad (and we don't have a dishwasher). Turns out the whole pipe needs to be replaced because the roots of a tree outside collapsed on it. I'm going to call our landlord again later today to figure out the status on getting that fixed, because right now we're washing our dishes in the bathtub and I don't intend to do that for much longer. He's a nice guy, just a little hesitant to spend money when it needs to be spent.

Sunday we went to see FI's family for Superbowl stuff. We both don't care about football, but we LOVE eating, so I made buffalo chicken dip, loaded fries, and pulled pork sandwiches. Then we spent the majority of the game playing Evil Apples. The commercials were mostly terrible, but everyone liked the Locktite one. We liked the halftime shot though. We ended up getting home super late, and I slept like crap in general so today I'm grouchy and tired.

  • Plus amputee kid, dad dropping daughter off to war, deadbeat racecar dad, ugh! I'd rather have whazzzup frogs.

I'm "working from home" but haven't gotten out of bed yet.

Oh Jesus, I forgot about the daughter off to war commercial. That made me cry.
  • I am still recovering from yesterday's food coma. I ate so much junk & my body hates me for it. Can I help it if someone wrapped hard-boiled eggs in sausage crumbs & drizzled maple syrup on it? (It sounds weird, but I swear it was delicious.)

Also, this year's set of SB commercials was one of the worst I've ever seen. Kudos to Katy Perry, though, for her spot-on live vocals during half-time! I was also pleased to see John Travolta there to support Adele Dazeem, who delivered a flawless national anthem.

  • This weekend was amazing: we spent Saturday downtown (Chicago) eating our way through Restaurant Week and staying at a lovely downtown. It was amazing.

We cut it short because of snow. So much snow. We spun out and screwed up a wheel on the way home (no one got hurt, just annoying). 2+ hours of shoveling. Then DH and I each had a few hours of work/homework. I tried to multitask watching the game but failed miserably. Work is done but I missed most commercials (the only part I really care about).

    I'm ready for another weekend.

  • Why was there no M&M commercial? I missed the sending daughter off to war commercial. Fiat, Doritos and the avocado one were funny.

  • My back is finally functional again! Yay! Tried not to overdo, but it felt so great to be up and about that I may or may not have made Super Bowl food for a crowd. There were just two of us. So, barbecued chicken wings for breakfast. Probably for lunch, too.

So, after a week of in bed with IPad knot working, time to get moving. There's a dresser in the basement with drawers that are split and warped. Frikking dove tail joints, of course. I have to decide how much effort it's worth investing. Is it worth my time to actually restore, or just say whatever and turn it into a painted repurposed piece.

Daughter is super stressed and freaked out. After three interviews and meetings, was offered a display and merchandising job that was a dream job. Store she loves, big downtown windows, loads of room for creative choice with no corporate interference. The owner offered her a good pay increase over her present salary, was all excited about taking her on buying trips, told her she'd be getting her start schedule by Wednesday. Yay!
She gave her two weeks notice, signed her quitting papers and then.......wtf? Owner calls her Friday to say they decided not to create a new position until June. So, if she's still available then...

And now she doesn't even qualify for unemployment, because she voluntarily gave notice.

I just can't believe how frikking irresponsible it was to offer a job and then change their minds. I'm furious. I will be making lots of soothing noises and baking many cookies this week.
  • I am actually not looking forward to leaving work and heading home today. Usually Sundays are my catch up on cleaning/mop the floor day but since FI's friends came over for the game 5 HOURS beforehand I never got a chance to really do everything. I went to bed after Katy Perry and woke up to a  1/2 assed clean up job. GRRRRR

    I need a snow day!

  • @ohannabelle Yay for your back! That is buuuuullshit for your daughter!! Would she consider keeping her current job? Would they let her? I'd be skeptical to sit around waiting until June. Sucks.

And I always thought dovetail was supposed to be "the best". No?

Oh, dovetail is lovely. Cutting out and replacing new dovetailed pieces for old things that have acquired wonky bends and measurements is frankly, a time-consuming minute detailed huge pain in the ass. So some old things are so exceptional or lovely or valuable, that yep, do things the hard way and actually restore to as close as possible to original condition. Other things, not worth the effort. It would cost more time and effort than the return justifies. Throw in a drawer that fits, paint the sucker, make a profit. Or screw the drawers, put in a wine rack, and call it a bar.

Nope, they won't undo the resignation. They are assholes, which is why she was looking for something else. She's a planner worker financially organized type A, so she's just freaked. (She did not get this from me. I'm a que sera, sera type. Nobody's going to die, I'll find something else. Hey, I'll make up a job, and try something new.)

I would really love her to come in with me. I bet she could organize the hell out of my wayward business, but she says no, I'm not disciplined enough and I randomly change direction and don't follow plans and she'd have to kill me. This may be true.
  • I was expecting this weekend to be a drag, but it was actually pretty good.

Saturday we went on a double date with FI's friends. There's a wine store/restaurant that had a special for tasting wines on tap, so we did that and it was fun. We each got the special that included the wine tasting and one appetizer, so FI and I each picked out the appetizer we wanted, and FI's friend and his GF picked out what they wanted. Then the GF made the executive decision that all of our appetizers would be "for the table" and started helping herself to my food. BITCH, DON'T TOUCH MY FOOD. I was already PMSing and hangry and that just made me rage. (I normally don't mind sharing, but they picked appetizers that I don't eat) Afterward we picked up some snacks and went back to FI's house and killed another two bottles of wine.

@ohannabelle there's never a bad time for BBQ! And I'm glad your back is better!

@wandajune6 what was your favorite restaurant that you went to? FI and I will probably be going to Chicago a couple times this year (and I may or may not be getting some new clients there) so I'd love recommendations!

  • I'm jealous my DH is still sleeping.   I'm also annoyed that the bulldog woke up early (normally you have to wake him up).  So I had to take both dogs out, feed them and then they both went back upstairs to go back to sleep with DH.

Weekend was okay.  We had people over last night.  It was nice.   Like always DH make way too much food.  I will be eating chicken parm all week.    Good thing I love his chicken parm

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Similar thing happened to me. I got offered a job, gave my notice at my old job, and then the new job said that they didn't have the funding, so they had to retract the job offer. Luckily, my old job let me come back.

It worked out for the best, because I found a better job 6 months later, and I'm still there 7 years later. Everything happens for a reason, hopefully she'll find something better. Good luck!

Oh, I did see that one. I didn't think it was that bad, especially not compared to the 911 pizza call or the nationwide one.

  • Had a lovely weekend. Friday night, H took me out to dinner and I had the BEST steak. I want to eat that steak every day.

Saturday we spent all day cleaning for our SB party. H was a huge help in getting our mudroom cleaned out.

Yesterday we had my in-laws and a few friends over for the game. So much food, so much fun. I barely paid attention to the game and just enjoyed having everyone over to my house.

Today I'm at home. H and I both took the day off and I'm glad we did. We got a foot of snow overnight and I doubt I would've been able to make it in to work today. So I'm snuggling the pup and watching movies all day.
  • @huskypuppy14 not disturbing the way those were, but made me sob my face off nonetheless.

  • I'm a heartbroken seattle fan. That is all. Plus I didn't do so good on a math quiz so I'm trying to do extra credit but Khan Academy is being dumb. I'm in a foul mood. Hopefully the day gets better!

  • Seriously though, people are so stupid. I'm part of a facebook buy/sell page in the area and this woman just posted that she's in search of a "good, working snowblower". Really?? This is our fourth big storm within 10 days. You really think anyone just has a random working snowblower that they aren't using or haven't already given a family/ friend?!

And that's why we bought ours in the summer. People are idiots.
  • Ugh. Had kind of a blah weekend. FI and I both work for companies that work in conjunction with the oilfield. While we don't work directly in that line of work, our companies rely on the oilfield. I work for a surveying company that surveys for the oilpatch, and FI is a pilot who flies guys in and out of the camps.

With oil so low right now there's obviously some pressure from companies to reduce cost, and business has been very slow for both of us. My company implemented a hiring and wage freeze and eliminated all overtime. Fine, whatever. Sucks but doesn't affect me too much.

We got an email memo from FI company on Friday. They laid off 35 people! (thankfully FI wasnt one), ceased all company functions, company sponsorship and scholarships and immediately eliminated employers contribution to pensions and cut everyone's salary by 5% effective immediately.

And to just rub salt in the wound just a little more, they are coming to our base (the head office is in another province) on Feb. 9 to discuss the changes and the future of the company. February 9 is a provincial holiday in BC. A holiday specifically implemented to encourage people to spend the day with their families. So now they all have to go in on a holiday to be reminded that their wages are being cut and no more pension. Grawr.

So grumpy. I'm so so so thankful that he still has his job, he could have easily been laid off. But nontheless, Im so unimpressed right now.

  • @blabla89- went went to 2 places: The Lobby at the Peninsula and ZED 451. The Lobby is a gorgeous space, wonderful food, and amazing service. I think of it as an experience place-- the food's wonderful but there's nothing exciting. But the service is that level of attentive you just don't get at most places. I don't necessarily need to go back but it's a lot of fun.

ZED 451 is a Brazilian steakhouse. Tons of food, great cocktails, and a fun atmosphere. It was very loud. I think I prefer Fogo de Chao or Brazzazz, though it was very good.

I can give you endless recommendations based on where you'll be and your taste in food. Feel free to PM me if you like!

You bet your sweet asses that's how I strolled in this morning!
  • Friday we had drinks and dessert (Makers Mark bourbon bread pudding) at our wedding venue which was fun. It's a private club on the 26th floor of a building that's down the street from our apartment; we're less than 100 days out from the wedding and it's kind of torture because we drive by it twice a day every.single.day. This is a picture of the building from one of our walks the other night. It's right on a small lake and has gorgeous views of downtown Dallas at night with these huge ass windows (the taller of the 2 buildings).

Saturday we took a concealed handgun course and did our range qualifications, which was a huge relief that we both passed the written test and shooting proficiency part. We went out for celebratory beers and ended up talking about a TTC timeline for later this year which is exciting and a little bit scary all at once (*googles: how to not be a terrible mother*).

Sunday was grocery shopping and cleaning with FI, then cooking and football. Didn't really care about the outcome of the game, I sorta like both teams. Exciting ending though. I did my taxes in like 20 mins and I'm not getting that great of a refund.  Oh well. Then I tried to complete my concealed carry license application online and found out I can't because I recently renewed my DL (which I had to do in order to take the course...) so I have to wait until I get my new DL in the mail. Wah.
