I agree with @ashley8918 on the America Sniper thing. I was asking my husband why. Why Chris Kelly? Why his "story"? There are thousands of soldiers who go through the exact same thing so why is he singled out to be some super special hero? @lolo883 congrats!!!!!!!! Can we come up with a moniker to call it? My friend went with Harold and my SIL went with Grace (neither actually used those names).

First you should never sit on a track waiting for traffic to move.  This is a suburb of NYC. not some little town in the middle of no where who hasn't seen a train in decades.   Those tracks ARE being used, often actually.     If you are stupid enough to sit on the track when those bells start ringing and those little gates start coming down, well that is time to MOVE, not get out of your fucking car and check the damage.   IT"S A FUCKING CAR.  There are things called insurance and body shops.

As far as why Chris Kyle's story? he wrote a book called American Sniper. Cooper bought the rights even before Kyle was killed.  I'm guessing he liked the book and simply something he felt would make a good movie.

    Yep. This. I understand
why  it was made into a movie, I just don't think it should have been. He was a liar, and kind of a shit person. He made up a ton (ahem most) of his "hero" (and other) stories, and basically said that he just liked killing people. Innocent people, actual terrorists, whatever.

I also agree with PPs that I am not into the whole soldier-hero worship aspect of it. The notion that all soldiers are intrinsically heroic is troubling to me, because they are just as capable of doing fucked up shit and/or acting in a way that is cowardly. In the case of Chris Kyle, he actually admitted to do some awful things (like killing innocents people and having fun doing it); Why in the fuck is this man being considered a hero?! Because he was a soldier, of course.

Yeah, I agree with everything you've said.
I think soldier worship is dangerious.

  • I feel like butts today. Probably partially because I didn't sleep well last night but I just want to crawl in a hole and never come out.

At least my novel is going well. Beta-readers are loving it so far.

This is something that deserves champagne and cake!

My writing buddy (we soundboard and beta-read for each other) is out of commission for a little while and I want to run some stuff by her before I carry on. It's making me sad. Technically I could just have DH read over it, but I don't like showing people other than writing buddy my WIPs.

That's a bummer! My mom is my beta-reader, and she is hardcore. She had me on the phone for 40 minutes this morning just to go over one chapter. I would miss her if she couldn't read for me for a while.

That is for serious hardcore! WB and I do everything over email, because neither of us has a reliable phone-line, and I can't decide whether that makes things easier or harder!

Harder, for me. I prefer to talk on the phone or in person about why they liked or didn't like something. Although I do make heavy use of Word's comment function when I'm reading for someone else.

See, on the one hand I totally agree with this (especially since it's so easy for comments to be misconstrued and tone to be misread in text), but on the other I feel like at least over email I have everything neatly in text to refer back to without me actually having to either make notes while talking or actually record the conversation. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Thank you. I feel like people will think I'm a bad American or something if I say that shit out loud.

  • @lavendarfields13 I get a lot of shit from H's conservative extended family (not MIL and FIL, they are great)  about how i'm unpatriotic or some bullshit like that. I just don't care, because I know that they are ignorant.Their opinion doesn't matter.

H didn't want to waste money seeing American Sniper because it bothered the crap out of him that Kyle uses sat phones from a Humvee transiting a war zone to call home in the trailer. I'm sure I'll watch it on Netflix one day with H annoyingly pointing out inaccuracies.

On soldier/hero worship - I don't think it makes anyone a bad person to think that some soldiers are bad people. I know a lot of soldiers - some are assholes, douchebags, or almost sociopathic. Most are your average people who wanted a chance to serve or a chance to do something with their lives. Point being, they're human with all the best and worst humans have to offer.

I think you can respect someone's willingness to serve and willingness to put their lives in the hands of our policymakers who claim they know better without respecting the human being. I always respect the service, but do not always necessarily respect the person.

Congrats lolo! It took me a few minutes to get what you were hinting at.

The plane crash video is ridiculous. I am glad to hear that there were survivors. I just wished more passengers survived.

I started reading the first Harry Potter book. Since I only vaguely know the story, I am looking forward to seeing if it's as great as everyone claims it is.

I am jealous that you get to read HP for the first time. It is so lovely

  • First, YAY LOLO!

Second- that train crash is horrifying. I don't live far from there and have been on that train many times. I really wish people would be more careful driving- this is an accident that DID NOT have to happen.

Third- never read 50 Shades and don't intend to. Don't see the allure. Also, I CANNOT believe that someone who wrote Twilight fan-fiction turned crappy smut got so rich. It really is astonishing to me.

I liked American Sniper (partly bc I have had a crush on Bradley Cooper since he played Will on Alias), but I agree with PPs. I don't think Chris Kyle was know to be a decent dude. And I think the movie kind of brushes over that. IDK, I didnt know him personally so I can't say with authority, but it seems like there is more to it.

This is where he first became my TV boyfriend too.  :)

    Congrats again Lolo.

I've never read 50 Shades and don't care to.  Won't see the movie either.  I don't really see how they can turn a book that is essentially sex scenes into a non porno movie.
