Now please tell me, why would you take a job when you feel this way BEFORE you even have started?

  • She's probably a teenager and her parents thought a job would provide some good experience.

Personally, I have always wanted my own money, but there are a lot of entitled brats out there today.

  • UUUUUUUUUGH.

Every possible thought does not need to be broadcasted out to the internet. WHY DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS????

  • When I googled my maiden name there was nothing. Just profiles for like 2 people in Denmark & Sweden. When I google my new name, there is a ton of facebooks and twitters (with stupid content) that come up. I'm like terrified that a prospective job will think one of them is me and not hire me!

But yea, that girl is a fucking retard and basically every state is right to work nowadays.

  • Yep, that's stupid. Even when I had a job I despised I never complained about it on social media. Because even a shitty job is still better than no job.

  • She should consider this a good lesson as to not posting every single thought in her little head on social media. Especially crap about jobs. Genius.

  • I remember that.

It's like this social media generation doesn't understand privacy.  They feel every little thought, experience, whatever needs to be broadcast to the world.

    Yeah, no, they really don't.

lol yeah I remember that too. Hopefully she learned something.

And to the bolded, that drives me nuts. The posts on facebook that are like "vacuuming, then gonna have a glass of juice!" "doing laundry!" "making spaghetti!" "my head hurts." "I don't like the color red." "This tv show is annoying."

I mean. I can't decide if these people really think they're so interesting that everyone wants to hear every little thought in their heads, or if they seriously have no filter and/or are so in need of internet attention that they just have to constantly post, even if it's something so mundane. Shut your mouths, people.

  • I used to do PR work for a tiny arm of a large multi-national company that is known for things like food service at stadiums. So they employee a lot of low-level, low-income employees. When we first got a nifty social media listening tool I put the parent company's name in alone in addition to the tiny arm's name to see what came up.

I got hit after hit of people bitching about work on twitter and facebook. People bragging about going to work high. Saying they were going to spend their paycheck on booze. Saying awful things about their coworkers and bosses. I was aghast! Who is seriously that dumb! I brought it up to my client and she laughed and told me that they were well aware of what people were saying about them. I'm guessing there's some lucky person in HR that gets to read these awful messages and decides who gets to stay or go as a result.

And freedom of speech please. If you tell your boss to his face that he's the scum of the earth and your job is fuck ass you will get fired. So why is that any different than when you blast it out in a public place?

  • I am guilty of vague-booking things about one job I seriously hated.

But fin fact; there are these magical things called "privacy settings" that enable you to pick and chose who sees what on your profile. I have everything shut off for public, and then sub-categories for coworkers (the only ones I accept being ones who are real friends who know the score), family members, and people in general who don't need to see everything. It's amazing, you'd have thought it took me a whole five minutes to set up this elaborate web of sharing, and you would be wrong. It took a minute, tops.

Also there is this magical place called "In person" where you can bitch to someone and it doesn't get saved in a file and spread all across the universe.
You can be as private as you want on settings, but if just one person take a screen shot you can be screwed.

I'm not friends with a lot of DH's social media friends.  However, I have access to DH's FB.  He often shows me posts from his feed.     Not exactly private.  That is why I don't see the point of even doing it.    There can always be ways for someone to see what you wrote.

Actually this situation is a prefect example of that.  The boss was NOT a follower.  Actually he had not been on twitter in 6 years.  Another employee saw the post and brought it to his attention.

On another note I fucking hate vague postings.   It's stupid, people ALWAYS ask "awwe, what's wrong?" Then the vague poster  is all "I can't talk about it here."  Then why the fuck did you even bring it up?

Venting to me it coming on here or talking to a friend on the phone or in person. It's not vague posting on social media.   If anything I think poorly of the vague poster.  They all seem to just want attention.

  • I had to change my privacy settings on facebook specifically because one of my co-workers (kind of a friend) kept tagging me in posts that were super negative about work and co-workers. Like the photos with phrases across them. One of them said something about so many co-workers being stupid. Nope. Don't include me in that shit. Nuh uh.

She also constantly posts stuff about getting shit-faced and how hungover she is, and how she's at this bar and that bar and staying out all night etc. Our company is in the middle of an acquisition and all our jobs could be on the line so I feel like this is the wrong time to get wild/inappropriate with your public online presence, but that's just me.

  • I have the philosophy that you shouldn't say anything on social media that you wouldn't want your boss, mom, or pastor to see.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that there was software or something that an employer could purchase to see your social media accounts, even if it was private? Idk.

There was, I don't know if there still is because people were getting into lawsuits about the implications of invasion of privacy. I knew someone whose job was to use that software and check on potential/current employees, but this was several years ago.

Yeah, I remember hearing that when I was in high school and just graduating. I didn't know if it was 100% true or if it was still around.

Im actually kinda glad I changed my name. My first and last maiden name are used as a pseudonym for a gal who writes very graphic short stories, basically soft core porn. I always told potential employers about this and made it clear that the person applying was not the writer
  • Two really excellent pieces of life advice I've heard from sources I don't remember:

    1) Never get a tattoo in a place you can't hide in front of a judge.

    2) Never post anything on line you wouldn't want on the front page of a newspaper.

Our law firm just acquire software that will do discovery of people's social media accounts.  So yes, it's not just employers who can check your accounts, but also anyone who may be filing a lawsuit against you too.  There are probably many possibilities of use for something like this.

While we were waiting for our house to sell during the real estate slide of 2006/7, I worked at Curves.  I could walk to it, I got to work out for free, and extra money is always a good thing.
We had trouble hiring workers who would stay more than a few weeks.  It wasn't a great job - low pay, no benefits.
One of the girls who quit after a week said, upon leaving, "I'm not going to scrub that toilet.  I'm better than that!"  This young lady was a high school drop out.  I  pointed out to her that I had a college degree, and I didn't think that scrubbing that toilet every evening was beneath me.
Some people have a mighty high opinion of themselves.
