Happy Mardi Gras, everyone!

I really want a piece of king cake ....

Re: Mardi Gras

  • Happy Mardi Gras! I actually hate king's cake. Or maybe I've just never had a good one. Plus our office has a forced "celebration" every year which consists of a crappy cake and awkward conversation. I don't even think anyone here celebrates it so I'm not sure why we do it.

Sorry for the negative rant. I wish it was National Margarita Day. That's a thing, right?!

  • The director of our department usually brings in a king cake on mardi gras (she brings in cake for pretty much every holiday/celebration day and sometimes just because she wants cake) but sadly there's none today. Womp womp.

  • beachyone15, where in TX are you?  I know Mardi Gras is celebrated well in Galveston.

I remember one year we had a Mardi Gras party at work and Blue Bell made King Cake ice cream.  It was crazy good.

  • I got the baby in a king cake one year, and it's still floating around my house somewhere... I just can't throw it out, makes me superstitious!

I went to college in San Antonio and I didn't have good King Cake until I moved back to Houston.  Just enjoy some pan dulce from Mi Tierra for me. ;)
  • Mi Tierra is my fav!

  • I'm speaking for myself not the other MA ladies, but I feel like nobody up here even knows when Mardi Gras is, nevermind whatever the kings cake is. I haven't seen a single FB post about it, yet I'll see 800 posts when it's Cinco de Mayo.

  • Being from the New Orleans area, I have to ignore FB today.

The lack of knowledge, other than, SHOW ME TITTES AND LET'S DRINK makes me angry.

Also, I'm jealous of all my friends back home.

Everywhere else, it's just Tuesday. Home. Sick.

And one of those posts is always me, for Cinco de Mayo lol. It's true, though, I  never know when Mardi Gras is. My job had a Mardi Gras Float competition 2 years ago, but besides that, it's not really mentioned here. Oh, maybe except for the caf.  Maybe they'll have a Mardi Gras theme going on.

It's 35 there today.  Those Tits are going to be going to be cold.

One of our properties is on  Canal and we have a balcony (actually 2).   I can't say I'm sad I'm not there.   Mardi Gras is not my favorite.     I like the weekend that is 10 days before better.  Still see the parades, but not as crazy.

I use to work for a nice Bourbon St hotel.     All balcony rooms are stripped of all furniture. The rooms and all the hallways are lined with plastic (floors and walls). Between vomit, piss and other bodily fluids it's one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.  Those housekeepers are paid extra to work and IMO it's still not enough money.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Me too!  Mardi Gras in Galveston just isn't the same.  Nor are the king cakes...they're good, but they can't hold a candle to Randazzo's.

Oh gosh tell me about it! I have priced them before to get one shipped to me from Randazzo's and that led to me learning how to make them myself. They are not as good, but it helps a little!

  • I'm Polish, so it's not Mardi Gras it's Fat Tuesday. I celebrated with paczki like a good little Polack.

My office just sent out an email that they were available. And stupidly I started a diet today... :(
  • H and I just started our crockpot gumbo. He's off and my boss told me to stay home because of the ice, so we get to start drinking at lunchtime, woohoo!

I need to try my hand at a king cake.  I have all of the stuff, just not the time.  Maybe during spring break., I'll just call it an Easter cake or something.

We just moved to the ATL area, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to find them.  I was so excited to see paczki in the store that I didn't even read the label.  I just grabbed the last box and left.  I was so bummed when I got home and found that they were Bavarian cream.  So... I went back to the store and bought some raspberry ones.
Now FI and I have 8 paczki to finish before they go bad.  It's good to have goals.

Hmmm, maybe that's the new plan. This stupid diet keeps moving to tomorrow...procrastinator's diet!
  • My husband is very happy it's Fat Tuesday.  Making "Mardi Gras Dogs."  Based on this recipe, but I adjust the remoulade sauce to my own taste.  He was hovering while I made the sauce last night.

    That looks AMAZEBALLS!!!

I hope so!  All the ingredients are awesome, men love sausage/hot dogs/etc., and I love anything with remoulade.  It's not too late to run to the store and make it tonight if you don't have plans!
  • I made 2 pots of jambalaya last night.  That was my nod to MG.  I have a box of king cake mix from last time I went to NOLA, but that was... almost 5 years ago! Whoops!

It looks totally diet-y, right? Much more diet-y than the tuna steaks and veggies we have out for tonight?

Definitely.  It's a voodoo spell thing, but remoulade is calorie-free during Mardi Gras.  :)

We did "Mardi Gras" last year and this is when we went. We still got the Mardi Gras experience without the total Bourbon Street-esq shit show.

My sister lives in NOLA and doesn't go near the Quarter the week before or during actual Mardi Gras. She said she doesn't really go the week after either because of how long it takes to clean up the mess and for the smell of vomit and pee to go away. Yuck!!

Oh I agree with all of the above. I lived on the Northshore and we stuck to Mardi Gras over there.

St. Charles Avenue is the vibe I like. That area and parades are much more PG. The quarter is just too much and mostly drunk tourists.

I just get so homesick for the culture in general. It's like no where else. I'm a tad biased, though. :)

  • I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans in college.  Funny story - we had an "unofficial" Catholic Student Group trip to New Orleans.  Our campus minister, Fr Tom, used to live in Louisiana and still goes to Mardi Gras annually.  I just got an email from him - he is there right now and rode in the Bacchus parade and is currently getting ready for the Zulu and Rex parades.  That priest knows how to live it up!
