I sent out my invitations!!

I know, I know - I'm a week early.  But DC's post office is notoriously bad (it took people 2-3 weeks to get my STDs).  I sent them from a Maryland post office, but still - I wanted to bake in that extra week.

Now I really want to do my seating charts, but I obviously can't because we don't know who can come/not come.  I hate it.  I'm such a planner, and I hate that I couldn't figure out seating charts like a year ago haha.  I'm so excited to get my RSVPs back so I can slowly start filling it in!

  • Yayyy! You can always start generally putting people together. Seriously, color coded post it notes were the best ever.

  • Wooo! I'm so jealous... I have time but I REALLY just want to get those suckers done and sent! It's taking everything I have to just wait until the right time, I don't want to send them out too early.

Yes, I've started doing a general seating chart, but I've also realized how much tables could change if one or two people can't go.  Also, I have no idea who I will make sit next to my insufferable aunt lol.  Maybe I'll make my mom decide who sits at that table

Yeah, mail is fun!  I would have waited another week, except DC's mail is SO bad.  It often takes me 2-3 weeks to get cards, and I almost missed getting the instructions telling me how to get sworn in to the Maryland bar!  Because I'm inviting so many people from DC, I just wanted to have an extra cushion.  I know - it's a little against etiquette, but I can't imagine many people will actually get it more than 8 weeks in advance.

I sent out mine last week! I live in MD and sent mine out on Thursday.... no reports of anyone getting them yet, so I'm getting anxious. I'm excited/nervous to start doing those seating charts, too. It's gonna be rough!

  • I'm with you ladies, invites going out next week, have been itching about them. I just want to send them and start checking people off. I also like to do things in advance as much as possible, and seating chart is going to be a doozy with us both having divorced parents and some people downright hating each other. Realistically I know I can't do anything about it yet...

Our RSVP deadline just passed and I am SO excited to work on the seating chart - even though I know it will be a big headache at some point. Getting RSVPs was so far one of the most exciting parts :)

  • I just sent mine out too! I didn't even mean to do it a week early, I was trying to hit the 10-week mark lol. With our weird hotel situation I wanted to make sure people had plenty of time to book.

Also, FI's wedding band came in the mail today!!! Also also, he's leaving work early this afternoon to go buy his suit! Woo!

    67 days!

  • I was tempted to order my invites in a sale last weekend... my wedding is in OCTOBER.  I feel like not ordering was a good idea.  I don't have to avoid the temptation to send them this way.

I think people will also think mine are going out a bit early, but I was reviewing my booze proposal and they need final count 14 days before the event; caterer / baker wants them 10 days ahead.  So, mine will probably seem early to a lot of people.

    Oh well.

Have fun.  I'm dreading seating charts, but I went to a wedding this past summer where there wasn't one.  My fiance was in the WP and at the head table (love this couple but there were so many faux pas it was crazy) and I only "knew" one other person there- the wife of another guy in the WP who I'd met only once before, and she was already sitting with college friends and the table was full so no room for me.  I ended up being the solo rando and a table of people I didn't know.  It was a long meal...

I actually sent mine out a little early. I didn't mean to, but after we got everything addressed I was so excited I threw them in the mail without really thinking. Fortunately they're just a little bit early, but I can't believe I did it completely without thinking.

  • I loved sending mine out!  They were ready to go for a couple of weeks, and I was sooo antsy knowing they were ready and just sitting there....waiting.

Exciting stuff!  I also got my dress back from the seamstress today - one more thing complete!

That's what I kept saying, but it will get here before you know it! When we set our date we had a year and a half to go, so it seemed soooo far away. And now it's like wow, it's almost here!

Yeah, much as I dread creating the seating chart, it is still a lot better than forcing your guests to fend for themselves. I've tried to think about it and I don't think I've ever been to a wedding without table assignments (aside from when my parents got remarried, both of those weddings were less than 10 people so there was only one table).

I picture walking into the wedding you describe and it being like a giant, even more high stakes version of a high school cafeteria. Nightmare. Of course my bride friend wants to have open seating. Le sigh. I can't seem to talk her down from her bad ideas...

This is what I'm hoping for. I got engaged in 2013, married in 2016, so I feel like I'm on a slow train there.

You'll appreciate it, though, when you get hit with all the details and stuff! I thought a year and a half was so slow and boring, and I booked all the big stuff within 2 months so I thought "psh, i coulda planned this whole wedding in like 4 months!" But nope! The big stuff is so easy. I'm so glad now that I had a good long lull plus plenty of extra time to take care of the stupid little stuff I hadn't even thought of before. And there's still lots more to do!

That is EXACTLY what it felt like. So, this couple had a gap so they and WP could go bar hopping... So I go back to hotel where the reception was and decide to read / nap. I didn't leave for the reception until about 10 minutes before the start time because I'm thinking, "find card with name; look at table number; locate table number; sit in empty seat;" this is not rocket science and can be done in 4 minutes tops.

Nope. I walked in and its packed. And I'm looking for the table with escort cards- nowhere to be found. Finally, I noticed there was a couple sitting near the gift table (guarding it? Same couple who got the "honor" of being the "program basket" at the church) and they told me it was open seating.

By that time everything was full. I walked up to 4 tables with what looked to be empty seats but they were being saved for people who were at the bar, chatting at another table, etc.

It was annoying. I'm a grown up so I dealt with it but I vowed to never do that to my guests.

I will torture myself with the seating chart before I torture them.

    Agree agree agree.

We will have been engaged for 8 months when we get married in August. We just got the big things finalized this month, but it occurred to me that we are going to have no lull like most brides talk about. I'm figuring out BM dresses and groomsmen attire this month, then it's our tasting and ordering the cake, dress fittings, invitations, showers, etc. I've been trying to convince FI to get going on ring shopping, and designing the place cards (we have a fun theme planned) and programs now because he gets really busy in the summer with work. I much rather have everything done in March and sitting in our condo than be running around in July freaking out about all we have to do!

I was so excited to send our invitations. I had them in my car for about two weeks before I finally dropped them off at the post office. It was maddening.

We actually got some RSVPs almost immediately. Several people called or sent me a message on FB telling me they'd be there. I was so excited that I didn't even get all pearl-clutchy about it. (And it's not like they had to mark the meal they wanted, as we had a cocktail/heavy app/800 pounds of dessert reception.)

  • My invitation proofs just got back and we love them!! Hoping to send them out by March 6th for our May 25th wedding!!

Our RSVP date is April 17, which gives us plenty of time to get back to vendors with the final numbers and still allows our guests about a month from when they get the invites to when they have to reply. We don't have any vendors that need to know numbers more than 2 weeks out.
    So our timeline:
    March 16 - mail invites
    April 17 - rsvp deadline
    May 8 - wedding

The good news is that you can still have time to really look at your timeline if you haven't ordered your invites yet.

Yeah - similar here -- May 2 wedding. Planning to send out invites week of March 2. RSVP deadline is April 14. Our caterer and baker need solid numbers by April 21 (and we have to full pay our caterer on that date) so that gives me about a week to track down non-responders.

Edit just to say: I was paging through "Bride" magazine last night and their wedding planning expert recommended sending invites out 3 months before the date and requiring RSVP's 6 weeks out. He also said you shouldn't have to invite people you don't know to your wedding so you don't need to invite boyfriends/girlfriends unless they are "truly significant". He was just full of terrible advice.

To the bolded: ew.  Some people should not be allowed to call themselves wedding experts.

My wedding is May 2, and my RSVP date is April 8.  That allows for a little cushion for horrible DC mail and late-senders, but not too much (our deadline is April 22)
