She could have mentioned being a lesbian because there are different legal ramifications based upon where she lives.
OP, there is a Gay Weddings board (clicky) that might be of more help to you. But your best bet is to start with a budget, and figure out which parts of the wedding are most important to the two of you (flowers, dress, DJ, food, etc). Then divide your budget according to what's most important and the prices in your area. Good luck!
