  • And--bonus--when you open the new account it can be ALL YOURS! No offense to your dad, who I am sure is a wonderful human being. But you are a real adult now (having suffered the rite of passage of an identity theft scare).

This exactly. That's what I told FI last night. It's not that my dad is nosy and checks up on my account, but it's not necessary that he be on there anymore and at this point it's inconvenient. My bank account could have been closed yesterday if his name hadn't been on there.
It was necessary for him to be on it when you were 18, though? (I swear i'm not sassing! I just don't understand.)

If she was living here at 18, yes. In Alabama, age of majority is 19.

Now that I think about it, I may have been 16 when we opened it. If I was, then I think he had to be on it since I wasn't 18(no longer a minor in Alabama) yet. If I was 18, it was definitely because I had no idea what I was doing and he just helped me out lol

Ahh so yeah I may have been 18. I think I remember something about not being able to do it by myself so that would have made sense.

I kept my mom on my accounts even after I was 18 bc I wanted her to be able to access to my safety deposit box. She would have inherited my accounts should anything have happened to me, so this just made it easier - just in case. It wasn't about being adult or child, so much as having a backup and knowing my assets wouldn't get lost in the system.

Ditto this. Plus my bank was in my hometown while I was away in college, so it made it easier if anything needed to be done there in person. Everything has been all in my own name since I graduated, and now in H's since we got married.

    Yep.

In Alabama, you can join the military and vote at 18 and literally do nothing else. I had to have my parents cosign my lease until I was a freaking junior in college.

Arizona doesn't have Daylight Savings Time. They won't be losing an hour of sleep on Sunday morning.

My 18 year old sister cannot buy cigarettes here (she doesn't smoke, but just an example), but she can drive 30 minutes east to GA and buy them there. It's definitely silly.

I'm pretty sure @beachyone15 means that he withheld for 8 all year, not that he actually FILED that on his return. Because you need to enter a SSN for each dependent so I doubt that he made up SSNs on his return. And didn't she say they owe like $1000? That means they caught the W4 issue when they actually filed with no dependents.

Sorry OP, we all have those moments sometimes. Hope it gets straightened out quick and they don't do too much damage!

Yeah, i'm pretty sure we all gathered that. It's just not clear fucking WHY or HOW he had no clue that he didn't actually have 8 dependants.
I don't have any dependents, but I knew I was going to have a lot of closing costs last year, so I think I claimed 4 or 5?  I think I owed like $100 in the end, which was great because I needed the money during the year!
Right, but it sounds like he didn't make the concious choice and just oopsed it... and, like, how?!
    0s sometimes looks like 8s??
I withhold 1 on my W4. When I get married, I'll probably start withholding 2. I'm not down with giving the government an interest free loan of MY money. Which is what a tax refund is, pretty much, just a return of all the money they used over the year. I'd rather have that in my pocket to begin.

    ETA: I have no dependents.
Yeah, it isn't technically "dependents," it's "exemptions" (on the W4). If you read it closely you can sometimes qualify for wayyy more exemptions than you realize. I usually take 1 because I like getting a refund more than I like paying.

I changed mine from 2 to 0 mid-last year to try and compensate for the lube-free fucking coming my way thanks to the marriage penalty... to no avail. Too little, too late.

Every time FI talks about the "tax benefits" of marriage, I'm like...dude. You realize we'll probably both be bumped into higher brackets, right?

Hopefully your offer is accepted and next year you'll be taking the new homeowner credit, though! (I know very little about taxes, but I think that's still a thing).

DH has recently informed me that he has like 5 or 6 exemptions listed on his W4. And I know I underestimated on my quarterly taxes also. I plan to do our taxes this coming weekend... not expecting a favorable outcome at all.  Plus, we will get hit with the marriage penalty on top of that, although I don't expect to get hit TOO hard for that one (maybe $1-2k).  Luckily we should have the money in savings to cover it. I prefer to underpay anyway and use my money during the year, instead of giving the government a free loan, but I think we are going to get hit harder than normal this year.

Dude it's crazy town, and some of the laws leave HUGE gaps. Especially with my job dealing with less than well behaved kids. Parents are like, "I can put them out at 18 right?!?!" And I'm like "Technically you're responsible for them until they're 19, but they can leave your house at 18 without your permission and we can't do anything to make them come back home." And their kids are basically going to be living on the street because they can't even apply for government housing until they're 19. Unfortunately, a lot of my parents don't care :(

I always had my parents on my accounts until I added DH to them instead. I just figured it was a good idea in case there was an emergency so someone could access my accounts.  If I got killed or something, it would save them the trouble of it going to probate.  Or if I was sick or hurt, they could access my accounts to pay my bills.

  • just read through this thread- after posting and then reading everyone else's replies I just wanted to add:

Perhaps I've just never been approached with an offer that seemed legitimate and then wasn't (I've received those scam emails before about the lottery or people from other countries looking for you to hold cash, but I wouldn't have ever agreed to those) so from my limited experience I didn't see the OP as a big deal.

I figured she'd call, cancel the request, and it would be over.

After seeing how concerned everyone else was, it made me realize that I should be more aware of "these" types of scams. I'll consider myself lucky up until this point. Lesson learned.

The bolded reminds me of the episode of the Office where Steve Carrel's character says, "When the prince of Nigeria asks you to hold some of his money for safekeeping, you do it." Bahahaha

Also, yes, I WISH it had been as easy as me calling them and canceling, done deal. I haven't had any backlash yet, but it definitely took an act of congress to even get in touch with them.

Those children may be able to emancipate themselves and then they are treated as "of age" and, as I understand it, qualify for government aid. I'll PM you; it's not something I'd mention to everyone, and I'd talk to a lawyer first, but if/when a kid gets kicked out at 18, that kid can emancipate and be considered a legal adult despite being a minor by law.

Not here either. Plus H owns the house we live in now.

Andplusalso they countered our offer way too high. We told them "no way in hell" and they came down another $2k (yippee.) but it's still too high. Hoping that letting them sweat will make them bring it down again, but looking at other houses in the meantime. Womp womp.

I also won't give out my credit card number over the phone unless absolutely necessary and I called them.  I had an instance where we had to close our checking account (again, thanks Target for the security breach) and I forgot to change the automatic payments for our newspaper subscription to the new account.  They called me, stating that I was a month behind on payment and wanted me to pay via credit card over the phone.  I'm sure they were legit, but I still told them to mail me an invoice, to the address on my account, and I will send them a check. Sending a check is much more secure than giving my debit card info to some stranger over the phone.

Also, when talking to someone, if the want to "confirm your address" or any of your information, let them state the info to you and you just say it's right or wrong.  If they are confirming your info, they should already have it, you shouldn't have to give it to them from scratch.

  • FREEZE YOUR ACCOUNT!!! losing all your money and dealing with identity theft is a lot more of a hassle. those are little things that need to be changed compared to the years of trying to get your identity back. one of my high school teachers son had his taken and to this day probably still has issues with it
