Name Rant

I'm using both my maiden and married names professionally, something like Mary Smith Jones. I registered for a university conference using Mary Smith Jones. I just went to pick up my name tag and my married name is spelled wrong, so it's Mary Smith Joens on my name tag. I know my married name is uncommon, but come on, you just need to copy and paste the names from the registration list to the name tags. I did it to make escort cards for the wedding, it's not that hard. I mentioned it to the organizer and she said I must have spelled it wrong when I registered. I showed her the registration confirmation with my name spelled correctly and her response was "there's nothing we can do about this now". Guess what's going to be on my conference feedback form. I'm currently looking for white out to correct my name.

Any other name change stories? Funny misspellings?

Re: Name Rant

  • Ugh...she could have at least admitted to the mistake and not just blown you off. I would be seriously annoyed. It's common courtesy to spell someone's name correctly.

  • Meh. Happens to me all the time. I don't have the space in my brain to devote to getting upset over typos.

It makes me laugh to see all the ways the Starbucks people creatively spell my first name.

  • My first name is spelled Kiersten. I got my name on the cover of my senior year yearbook. They spelled it Keirsten. The program director tried to tell me I must have spelled it wrong on my order slip.  It's been my name my whole life, I'm pretty sure I know how to spell it, plus I had the slip to confirm I did spell it correctly.
  • I once got a couple of my lab coats back with my name spelled "Behtnay" and now the entire lab calls me by that nickname.
  • It took about a week for someone to misspell my married name. Switching two letters in the name creates another somewhat common last name, so it happens ALL THE TIME.  I don't let it get to me too much.  But, my maiden name was common, short, and easy, so I do miss the ease of not having to spell it out or say it three times to people.

  • I kept my maiden name (for unrelated reasons) but...

DH's last name is very similar to a slur in Spanish, his native language. The Kid is required to wear his student ID around his neck at all times. He recently lost his (again) and the office printed a new copy with a misspelling-- the slur instead of his last name. His school is about 1/3 Mexican so he's getting mocked a lot.

The worst part? He didn't notice the misspelling himself.

  • I had someone on Linked In reach out to me and call me Debbie.  Yeah. Debbie is not even close to Alison.

Got an Allyson once at Starbucks, and Allison all the time at work even through you literally have to type my name in correctly to email me.

This^  My first name is misspelled all the time.

Even on her people type "Linda" or "lindausvi".  So not a big deal.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I get called Emily a lot. When it happens in person, I can understand more because maybe I didn't enunciate enough. But when someone addresses me through an email, it is frustrating. MY NAME IS RIGHT THERE!

  • My last name is uncommon but very simple. It's two four-letter words (not the dirty kind) put together. It's spelled exactly like it sounds. But EVERYONE gets it wrong. At the doctor's office, on the phone with customer service, making a hair appointment...no one pronounces it right. I always have to spell it out for people, and then I get asked to repeat it three times.

I'm taking FI's last name, but it isn't any easier :(

  • A lot of people like to add an extra E or take away an E. I have no idea why my last name is so hard. It's spelled the way its pronounced! Its two very common words combined together but it confuses people. I've had someone ask me if it was hyphenated, nope just spelled that way. So I can understand the annoyance.

When it's something like this, meh. But when I have typed out my name for you on a registration form and you spell it wrong, that annoys me. I hate walking around with a badge on my chest that is wrong. By some magic it is correct in the two separate spots it is listed in the conference program.

  • My name is constantly getting misspelled because they are the not-as-common derivatives of more well-known names. People are always changing the "e" in my first name and adding "e"s to my last name.

Oddly enough, there are at least two serious professionals with the same first and last name as me that live relatively near me. Makes Googling me seriously difficult!

I get that a lot on Linked In, because recruiters just copy and paste the same email to everyone. Most recently, someone called me Dave.
    @lolo883 Uh yeah - that's bad!

I actually am a recruiter - it was actually a candidate reaching out to me about a role, not a good first impression!

Not so much a name thing but the lady who handles name tags gave me one that didn't have any of my fancy degree letters and put intern on my tag. She asked me how I would like my nametag and I spelled out my name, letters and department. At first I was like meh whatever but then I remembered how everyone thinks I'm a kid and an intern when I have my masters degree. I refused to wear the name tag until it's fixed and I've asked her to fix it every paycheck day for 9 months. It's such a little thing but I worked hard and I'm sick of people assuming I can't do the job I was hired for. If one more little office assistant tries to make me copy things or run errands I'll flip.

I started to think she was doing it because she was mad at my success because there is no way you forget that many times in a row.

My boss finally stepped up and made her order me the correct one so let's see what happens if it comes in or not.

I mean I know how I was going to be treated because of my age and inexperience but I've slowly been proving myself. So I would like my nametag to be correct.

  • At work, my bosses always write my name wrong. in emails, in staffing lists. my email has my first name in it. They always add an extra n - like MarianNa. So whenever someone else notices it i say yes, didn't you know my name is "Mary-an-nuh-nuh". we laugh, and i move on, but i seriously question my manager's intellectual ability when I write "Sincerely, Name." and they respond with "Hi Namme" ... like WHAT?! ITS IN MY EMAIL RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR STUPID FACE!!

  • My ex's last name is common, but is uncommonly spelled with an ie instead of a y. My first name ends in a y and that is the common spelling for the name. So after I married him my name became something like Ashley Perrie. After my last name changed, people started misspelling my first with an ie (so like Ashlie) all of the time. As soon as I got divorced and went back to my maiden name, the misspellings stopped. It was the weirdest thing!
  • Nobody ever puts the second L on my current last name. I just automatically spell it out now.

When I take FI's last name, I will be spelling it for the rest of my life, and people will always pronounce it weird. Apparently for YEARS someone called his mom Mrs. RanchToast no matter how many times she saw it written out or had it told to her.

  • No one EVER says my last name right but I have a pretty standard first name and I always leave messages for people at work and someone called back and asked to speak with Cornelius. I am definitely not a girl named Cornelius. This was close to a year ago and I am still called Cornelius by all of my coworkers.

  • I don't get why this is a big deal? Like, who cares, really?
  • My name is Kathryn. It is always misspelled. I don't mind because there are so many ways to spell my name.

What really chaps my ass is when I introduced myself, or sign my email as Kathryn and then I am immediately called Katie/ Kate/ Kathy/ Kat /Kath/ etc. That is not my name, and don't give me a nickname.

  • I don't mind a misspelling.  It's an honest mistake.  What I do mind is when people arbitrarily decide they don't like your name or the way it's spelled so they misspell or mispronounce it on purpose.  It happened to me at my last job.  "Oh, that's not actually my name.  My name is X."

"Well, I prefer Y.  I'm going to call you Y."  Wtf?

Some of these stories are really funny!

To the bolded - Seriously? I can't believe someone actually did that. Was it something like calling you Izzie when your name is Isabelle or more like I don't like Isabelle so I'm calling you Anne?

It was more like "Oh, I'm going to call you Izzie because I like it better," so it wasn't too different, but it still annoyed me.  If I wanted to be called that, I would have introduced myself as such.

One of our employee's last name is pronounced buh-______. He pronounces it that way, his kids pronounce it that way, his extended family pronounces it that way. His wife pronounces it BEE-______ and NOBODY KNOWS WHY. Apparently she always has and even the employee just goes, "Honestly, I have no idea why the fuck she says it like that. We've been together for 25 years and my grandmother corrected her about it, but she still says it BEE-______."

People are fucking weird with last names for some reason.

  • Oh the name stories. First, a funny one. My last name is Smith and at one point my grandparent's mailbox got damaged and we became the Sith family. Cracked me up.

My first name is actually a fairly common name, but it's pronounced differently. Which has lead to many, many, many teachers and acquaintances calling me something not common, but not my name. Usually after the first few times I let it go, because it's just more work for me to correct people. But that means I'm used to responding to anything that sounds vaguely like my name.

My FI has a very polish last name that no one can spell or remember correctly. Once we get married my life will contain many instances of spelling both my names. Perhaps I'll still use Smith when I make restaurant reservations...
