Let's talk something thrilling- tubes in ears

Our pediatrician is pushing to have them done. I'm on the fence. DD has basically had recurrent ear infections since November. We do antibiotics, it clears for a bit then a couple of weeks later we're back because I can tell she's got something going on.

She honestly never seems outright sick- I only figured out that her ears were bothering her because she get a little more cranky and her nose runs. She doesn't pull on her ears, run fevers, or act like she's in a huge amount of pain. As of now, her hearing isn't impacted and she seems to be developing normally in the language department.

I'm not worried about the surgery. I think she'll be fine. The doctors are sort of leaving the ball in our court right now. They think her infections are viral so giving more antibiotics won't do anything for her, but obviously they aren't resolving on their own. They think that she has narrow ear canals (like me) and that contributes to it.

I don't know what I want here, I think I just need to type it out. I know some of you have done the whole tubes in ears business so I thought I'd get some perspective. She goes back next week for another check and I think we'll be getting the recommendation/referral to see the ENT.

  • Our doctor was very against tubes, thinking he'd grow out of it.  We had an Urgent Care doc tell us the same thing.   We held off for a long time because of her opinion (I'd say about a year or so...He had 12 ear infections in a 15-16 month period before we got them done).  He'd get ear infections so bad that he'd throw up.  DefConn's ear infections never resolved on their own.  There were a few times where it was just the 'beginning' of an EI, she'd hold off on doing anything, and we were back in less than a week later. DefConn was never delayed because of the ear infections, but it was really hard on DH and me because we were taking a ton of time off work to care for him. Doing tubes was the best thing for all of us.

He's had 2 ear infections in the 18 months since he had tubes put in and it is only after an extended cold/period of congestion that he gets them (like something that lasts more than a week).  He's hardly been sick since we had them put in.  I think he's had 2-3 colds and then we had our very unfortunate stomach bug last spring.

I think you could hold off, because of her age, a few more months to a year before deciding.  We held off in hopes he would slow down getting them, but it just never happened.
  • i am sure you can just treat ear infections with essential oils.

  • You still got some breastmilk around?  Just squirt it in her ears!
  • if she does get tubes, she can then present them for show and tell when the tubes come out.

all the kids in my class who got tubes did this.

  • If you trust your pedi, and know that she could have a genetic predisposition to narrow ear canals, I'd at least go to the ENT now and get their opinion. It's not going to hurt.

Wolverine doesn't have tubes, but some of her classmates do, and have had significant improvement as a result. (Less ear infections/colds, and one needed them placed before she could get her hearing aids. The hearing loss wasn't caused by the ear infections, but the combination left her with some speech delays.)
  • At this point, I'm more worried about delaying her speech or long term impact on her hearing. Thanks guys- more things to think about after next week.
