Re: Beauty Subscription Boxes

I just heard about a new subscription box called Cairn where you get outdoor items and accessories.  It sounds super cool and I'd love to try it, but I don't know that I want to justify spending the money. It's $25 a month, but it sounds so cool!  And the items sound really neat!

I'm now stuck in an internal conflict as to whether to tell FI that I'm now spending $10/month on make up samples, or to just let it go until the first box comes, and when he asks say, "Oh that? It's just some free makeup samples." I mean technically that's not lying.

And just fyi, no he probably wouldn't mind that I'm doing it, I've just been bitching a lot lately about saving money lol
I don't know how your relationship/finances work, but I dont feel the need to tell H about/get permission for $10 purchases. That being said, I would never lie to him about it... they aren't free.
FI and I don't really tell each other about purchases unless they're big. We're both pretty good at saving money and we both get the bills and rent paid on time every month, so the fun stuff he wants to spend his extra money on is none of my business and vice-versa. We never try to hide it or lie about it, though, cuz it's just not a big deal.

However, he knows I have a weakness for online shopping, and sometimes he likes to tease me when tons of boxes show up at the door. So I jokingly pretend I know nothing about it. "They must have fallen off the UPS truck by mistake. No idea why they're here. Weird."

I might pretend my Ipsy bags are from some bizarre, unknown source. "Hm maybe they're a free gift for shopping at Macys?" He'll know the truth. He always knows the truth. But I pretend I'm a little better with money than I actually am. Ha.

Now I really want to subscribe to a beautybox.  But Im a no clutter freak and I'm afraid these little makeup bags/products will really clutter up our super small house. :( **sad**

I've had both glossybox and ipsy for almost a year now, and I love them both. My roommate got birchbox for like 2 years and I never liked what she got, she was using it. We used to compare our items and I always felt like my ipsy box was more "me". I feel like with glossybox you tend to get more high-end/ full size products (and its double the price). I will say that the surveys are pretty much pointless, so if you more or less let that go you won't be super disappointed in what you get.

I am thinking to changing from ipsy to boxycharm, despite the higher cost I like getting more full sized products. As for ipsy, I'm mostly liked my things and find uses for the bags, but I'm feeling a change ahead!

Oh, that is cool! I'll have to look into this for h.

Late to the party as usual.

I did Ipsy for awhile but got really sick of it. A lot of the things are repeats and the makeup bags create way too much clutter. I may check out barkbox for my puppy!

The Julep box looks interesting. I really don't want to get a bunch of drugstore samples, because I feel like having things I can run out and grab willy nilly shipped to me would be a slight waste of time. Little bottles of nail polish with a side bit of makeup? Possibly more my style.

I got so sick of Julep so fast. I just don't need that many nail polishes. So many of them are super similar, I did Julep for a year and probably have like 3-4 pale purple/lilac nail polishes now. One is more than enough.
I'm kind of hoping a coworker or local friend will go halfies with me. That way, when we get similar colors we can trade them off on each other, or if one person likes a color more than another, the colors aren't wasted. Also then once a month I could have someone over for drinks and nail art.
My old coworkers and I used to do that. I got some sweet baby blue nail polish that way.

Definitely check out barkbox! I got one free as a gift from a girlfriend and got hooked. You always get at least one 1 toy (my last box had two) and all kinds of fun treats. I now have a giant basket full of treats and toys for my pup and it cost less than if I had gone out and purchased them from the store individually. I cancelled after a few boxes because I was getting overloaded on treats but I'll pick it back up again in a few months when his stock is getting low.

    1. I now want to sign up for one of these. I'm always scared to buy make up store because what if i do not like it!!!!???

    2. I know our abused women's shelter here would love some little cosmetic bags to put together tolitery kits for the women coming to them. Also homeless shelters and the VA put together similar kits and could use some small bags. So ya know...go donate them...if you don't want them for yourself.

    1. I am totally pro subscription boxes (i am obsessed with my Ipsy) but in case you didn't know - Sehpora has a phenomenal sample policy and return policy. They'll make you a sample of anything in the store that they feasibly can, and they accept returns for any reason (even just "I wore it a few times and decided the color wasn't right for me/it didn't last all day/whatever").

    2. That is SUCH a good idea! I'm going to start saving mine and find a charity to donate them to. I know when I was in high school a local charity made toiletry bags for kids in foster care, I might see if there's an organization here that does that.

@charcoalandblush but Sophra is the fancy expensive store! I'm mostly drugstore make up. And I feel like I'm not cool enough to shop at Sophra.

I will shop at Ulta. Ulta doesn't scare me. But Sophra has...things...and...stuff. I don't think they even carry my Maybeline mascara...

That's why the samples are so awesome!!! I have no shame in going in and getting like 5 samples. Lol. But yes, in general it is much more expensive, and they don't have the drugstore brands.

@MagicInk That's a great idea about the bags! I'll definitely do that with mine once I start getting them.

I also want to start getting my puppy barkboxes. I'll check with FI tomorrow about this.

I LOVE Ulta and was super sad that no one got me a giftcard there for Christmas, even though that's all I asked for. The last time I was there a lovely man named Andre who was wearing eyeliner and mascara did my makeup and sold me about $60 worth of stuff. He was fabulous and I loved him.

But they wear EXTREME CLOTHING and have facial pircings and unnatural hair! SCARY!
True story, I've had Ulta people ask me where I got my ink done. And yes, I'm smarts so I hand them a business card. Not all my ink came from my shop but fuck it, mama needs dollars.
This is kind of why I'm giggling at you. Permanent ink in the skin = no big, but the temporary ink at sephora is too scary!
Just imagine Sephora as one, big, mysterious, awesome vagina and GET. IN. THERE and just play with everything until something works.

    OMG LMAO!!!!!

I'm like convinced I'll get yelled at in Sophora cause they'll think I'm some hood youth up to no good and security will come and I'll be escorted out of the mall.

For some reason I think I have to go to the mall this weekend. There is a thing there that I need to buy...I think. So if I go, I will go into Sephora and not be scared and not think they're going to make me buy lots of expensive stuff I cannot afford to buy.

But do you buy anything?  I can't go in there without buying anything because I have a serious problem, but in theory could you get samples and not buy a thing?

This is a good question. I need to know this before I go there this weekend. Cause again, hood youth.

The sephora people try to tell me what colors I shouldn't wear because of my coloring (all) and try to sell me on makeup that will cover my freckles. The ulta people try to help me find the right shade of bright red lipstick if I ask. They think my frecks are awesome.

Oh I do all the time. Probably half of the time I go there I just get samples, the other half I actually buy stuff. Just tell them "I'm looking for a new X, what would you recommend?" and then tell them you want to take home a sample before you buy it.

You are all bad influences. I just subscribed to Ipsy. I hope you are proud of yourselves.

So did I! And I even sent people invites (although I hate the people who do that, haha!) so I could get it sooner.
