I cried like hell when Tris died, but only because of Four.

It's crazy that The Giver, Lord of the Flies, and Flowers in the Attic are all considered YA books. I need to re-read those...

I cried too. I just felt so horrendous that it happened and I couldn't believe it. So, I guess she largely got the response she was hoping for, but once I stopped being upset I was just furious hahaha
I was fighting back tears but I was in public while I was reading the book... sniff sniff. Agree I was more sad for Four, not just because she died.

Sidenote, I just watched "Everything Wrong with Divergent in 16 Minutes or Less" on Youtube and it cracked me up. Comparisons to Hunger Games and Harry Potter abound!

  • So this may be a UO, but here goes: I liked Divergent, wasn't crazy about Insurgent, and really hated Allegiant. I just felt like Insurgent was rushed and not properly thought out, and Allegiant was totally unnecessary. It didn't feel like a cohesive trilogy to me at all, but more like 1 worked and they (Roth + publishers/agents/whoever) went "series are really in right now, let's do that". I didn't cry at all when Tris died, and I am the biggest blubber-baby of them all, so I feel like that's saying something.

I agree with all of your first points. However, the story was unfinished at the end of Divergent. There was no resolution of the overarching plot. I don't feel like it was a "series are sooo hawt, let's do a series" so much as a "let's give this time to work itself out" and then it... didn't get worked out.

I wholeheartedly agree that Allegiant was awful, and that overall it didn't feel like a cohesive trilogy at all.

This is true. I read through the series so quickly that the end of Divergent and the beginning of Insurgent kinda ran together for me. I just think she could have planned things out a little better.

It was like she set out to make a sweater, but she only had half the pattern so she decided to wing it for the rest, and by the end of it there was just all this loose yarn flapping about the place, and you could SEE where she was trying to patch it, and it just wasn't working.

I didn't cry when Tris died either. I saw it coming and was so annoyed with the writing (I'm sorry but Roth does not know how to write from two different POVs) that when Tris died I just rolled my eyes. I didn't even really like Tris by the end.

It is not within the realm of science for me to agree with you any more than I do on this.
