  • lemon/lime juicer

garlic press - Zyliss brand is WAY better than any other

and a mandoline! Cheap version is fine (mine is a Kuhn Rikon and cost ~15 bucks)

Lol, I had to google mandoline to see what you were talking about. My first thought went to the stringed instrument.
  • My favourite item is our Joseph Joseph nesting bowls and measuring cups. They have given us so much room back in our small kitchen cupboards.

I was most excited to register for the Hamilton Beach FlexBrew, where you can brew a pot or use K-cups on the other side, but I haven't gotten it yet.

@luckya23  We have the FlexBrew! Got a sweet deal on it at Kohls! We love it! It's great for the weekends for when we have time and will drink enough to justify making a pot, and on rushed mornings to use K-cups.

SIB:  I LOVE my Hamilton Beach 2 way coffee maker.  I don't have the flexbrew because I HATE using K-cups.  Mine doesn't have K-cup capability but the individual side just has a small reusable filter (you can buy these separately for some K-cup machines to use with regular ground coffee).  I also LOVE my stainless steel kitchenaid coffee grinder.  I use it every single day!!!!!!

  • @Casadena, I think the FlexBrew comes with a mini basket filter for that side too. I've never used K Cups personally - I think I would like the convenience, but hate the price!
It would be worth it to me though for FI to make just a cup before he goes to work at 5pm if I'm not home, rather than to return to a scalded full pot that's been sitting for hours :-P

Probably it will become my kitchenaid. My FI is a celiac so I end up making a lot of bread and things like that.

    Right now, this thing.

Honestly, my favorite kitchen gadget is my Kitchen Center.

    image
The only thing I don't have for it is the blender carafe, and that's because I broke it and haven't replaced it yet. It's "vintage" though, so probably not available at Macy's.

I also love my microplane. I don't get to use it all that often, but it is fantabulous. Stainless steel measuring cups, a bundt pan, a good set of stainless mixing bowls from ginormous to eensy, a good set of storage vessels, and a cake carrier are all things I want, as well.

And whoever mentioned odd-sized measuring cups? Now I want those too.

ETA: I meant to mention: be careful with cheap mandolines. FI won't let me get one til I can get a good one. He likes my fingers attached to my body, and the cheaper ones can be ... not as safe. Use the hand guard! love, - your friendly neighborhood food safety geekette

DH says the exact same thing.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • @hellosweetie1015 I wear an oven mitt while using my mandolin. Works perfect.

@photokitty I love my spiralizer. I honestly haven't perfected cooking yet, they turn into a wet mush for me. However I did invent the best snack on the planet (ripped off from the sushi restaurant). Spiralized cucumber, diced avocado, diced shrimp, tiny bit of mayo mixed around, lemon juice, pepper, and topped with panko crumbs.

My favorite items are now my  kitchenaid mixer, my food processor, and my stainless steel nesting bowls with silicone bottom.  My nesting bowls stay put when I am mixing things and I only need one hand to do it.  Best invention to take silicone out of boobs and put it in the kitchen!
My favorite appliance is my espresso machine!  I just got it.  H's office closed and he, now, works from home.  His work had a Nespresso machine, and it is fabulous!  His company gave it to us when his office closed. We are saving so much money in the warmer weather making our own iced lattes.
  • Ohh ohh ohh I forgot one. After Christmas I went to BB&B and spent the money that didn't get spent on our trip and FI convinced me to get a Silpat (or a knockoff anyway, real Silpats are expensive). I fucking LOVE that thing. I cook everything on it, NOTHING sticks, and I haven't had to wash my sheet pan since I got it. Absolutely 100% worth it.

  • Now I'm looking at alllllll the different Ninja systems - anyone find any of these indispensable?? It might be nice to have one machine that can be a food processor and a blender....

  • I have a Zogirushi rice cooker. It's awesome, and for some reason it plays children's songs when it's done. IDK if Macy's has them. DH's old roommate had one and we got really excited when we saw one at Costco.

For things that Macy's actually has, I am eternally thankful for my Cuisinart food processor (I do use it for a blender as well) and a really good crockpot. I think mine is Cuisinart as well, it has openings in the lid and a range of times and automatically goes to warm when done. Most only have settings like high 4 hours/low 8 hours and don't automatically go to warm, which is annoying and kind of defeats the purpose of being able to throw shit in and being able to forget about it.

I also like my squishable colander and measuring cups. Also have the spoons but that's kind of pointless since they don't actually squish.

I would like a food saver. I guess that's the only thing I feel like I'm missing.

-Spiralizer. It seems silly but we use it for zucchini noodles and other spiral cut veggies on a regular basis.

So I REALLY want one of these...but am worried they don't really work. How do you prepare the cut veggies afterwards? Tell me more :)

I make zucchini noodles regularly. I'll make my sauce a bit dryer than usual then toss in the raw zucchini noodles. Just heat them through and you're good.

I love spiraled veggies in a stir fry. They just look fun and make up for no rice or noodles.

Sweet potatoes that are spiraled and roasted are fry-like and wonderful.

Also, my new favorite it a Greek salad with spiraled cucumber. Random but fun. Check out Inspiralized.com for more ideas.

We got one as a wedding gift and I use it constantly. I have a nice food processor that I never use now. I think we have the Pro and I love how easily I can toss it into the dishwasher. It doesn't do everything that a food processor can but is easier to pull out, set up and clean. If we had the counter space to keep the food processor out, I'd probably use it less.

I don't have the Ninja system (yet) but I've had a Cuisinart Duo blender/food processor for... gosh, 8-10 years. It's awesome and I use both pieces a lot.

  • I have the Ninja food processor/blender set. I don't use it a ton, but when I do use it, it's nice. I like that there is 2 different sized food processor bowls. The individiual smoothie cups get used a lot.

I like my spiralizer too. My FI won't eat all zucchini noodles so I take a very small amount of spaghetti and boil it. When there is about a minute left, I toss in the zoodles, and then drain it all together and top with sauce. It's great. I also use it with cucumbers, to make funny cucumber strings for my niece and nephew when they visit lol.

I would get spatulas, all sizes. I never seem to have enough, or they're always all in the dishwasher.
  • The pineapple corer.

    This

    and this

    are my two favorite gadgets!!

I also love my cherry pitter

don't get the single one, it takes too long and not worth the effort.

I also love my apple peeler and corer

OMG, YES to that slicer thing- I love it. I like how it all falls neatly into the little box below.

  • I will keep my registry because people are always wondering what to get me for Christmas or my birthday. I always forget what I need/ want whenever I am at the store. This way, I can keep track of things I would like and buy them myself, or if someone asks me, I don't say, "Yeah, a football... what's a football?" I don't show them the registry, or anything, I can just convey it to them, if they ask.
  • Got an electric pressure cooker for Christmas and after I got over the fear of using it I now LOVE it! I like cooking and taking my time sometimes, but most week nights I want dinner done in 1/2hr and on the table!

  • My favorite pricey gadget is our Breville smart toaster oven, we use it all the time cooking for just the two of us, and in the summer it is especially nice since it doesn't heat up the kitchen the way the full size oven does.

My favorite fun type gadget is the Corksicle Air (ours is actually a different brand but I can't find it), which keeps our wine a bit cooler and has a pour spout so you don't have to take it out of the bottle.  I also love having a deviled egg carrying tray, they are my favorite app to bring to a party now that I have an effective way to transport them and it's one of the few things I use more than I thought I would.

Garlic presses are the shit, but I'm partial to my Pampered Chef one and wouldn't recommend a direct sales company for a registry.

We call them zoodles too :) We have an issue with undercooked sweet potato noodles. They're difficult to digest, and FI has a particular sensitivity.. But we've also used it to make a killer celery remoulade, very quickly.

Besides our spiralizer, good knives, silicone bottomed mixing bowls, and smoking gun, my favorite thing is actually really basic:

    http://www.amazon.com/Chefn-Switchit-All-Purpose-Silicone-Spatula/dp/B00276BXQ0

It's a double-ended silicone spatula, with a great hand feel. Also dishwasher safe, fine at high temps, and has no sharp edges (which is great for a klutz like me).

Yeahhh... I got a cheap mandoline for Christmas last year. First thing I said was, "I'm gonna cut my finger off with this thing!" And sure enough, a few days later I was bleeding all over my sliced cucumbers.

Yep. That's why I always pout at them in BB&B because FI has designated them all as "cheap". If he weren't a chef, I'd probably ignore him buuuuuuuut he is. So I figure he knows what he's talking about.
