Lol except she wasn't a "victim" of anything. No one called her employer, no one got her fired, no showed up at her house.

I dunno, I think everyone jumped on the OP kind of, well, not nicely.  Yes her question was pretty lame.  But to take her name and go find her other personal info, and post it wasn't cool.  Sure the regs here may just be having fun, but some lurker could have read it and used it negatively.  It's like if you find a credit card on the street, does that mean you can go use it?  No, you should probably just turn it in or destroy it.

Girlfriend. We do that everytime someone has a shitty s/n that has too much of their real info in it. Someone goes "Change your s/n cause in like 5 seconds I found your linkedin, your FB, your IG, your whatever social media". But we don't nothing with that shit.

And we google to verify. I could put my s/n as FionaSmyth. Sort of looks like a real name right? Not my real name. So if you type it into google and go "Yo I found some info on you using your s/n" I could be all "Weird cause not me".
But people did do stuff with the information, that's what I'm talking about.... posting her pictures, putting where she works here in the thread, etc.  That's all removed now (although there's still some quotes with her original username in them).  Trust me, I don't mind the snarkiness here, it's quite funny much of the time, but I just didn't think it was right what people decided to do with the info she put out there, that's all.

.....Serious question, does anyone actually use wedding hashtags?

Yes, but I have never seen them used very successfully. One had a grand total of two people posting to it and only seven pictures at the end of the day. The other had a few more photos but probably less than 20.

I have yet to attend a wedding where there was one and I don't know that I'd actually use it. My personal Twitter is very anonymous and I don't have any friends following it, and I don't follow any friends on that account. I'm still trying to figure out whether or not I want my instagram to be public or private, so I have yet to post any pictures of faces to it.  Also, if I do end up with a private account, my pictures wouldn't show up in the hashtag, I think, unless the people looking it up also follow me, which kind of defeats the purpose.

And I have to say, yes this thread has been fun.

That would be something one those poor attacked and stoned MODs should look into fixing. Or perhaps Riley.

ETA: And the other stuff came out after the OP was warned to change her name and instead of listing to people said "ZOMG what do you mean?!? What things?!? HOW!!!" which...bullfuckingshit. You don't ask for a wedding hashtag and have zero fucking clue how the internet works. Examples were given.

  • So does that mean that people are cool with me posting any personal info I can find or dig up, based what they have posted on here?

BC that's what I'm hearing people say.

So you'd be cool with me posting a link to your google results, linked in profile, FB, wedding website, etc?? Give me permission and I'll see what I can find.

You posted it on here, so it's your fault if I find it and share it, right? Photos are ok too I see. Who agrees? You feeling lucky?
Go ahead! I would love to see what my username pulls up :)

No, posting it is not ok. That's called Doxxing and it's a form of harassment and it's bullshit.

We all know that's bullshit. And you know damn we'll that no one is saying Doxxing is ok.

What ppl are saying is that if I make the mistake of posting too much personal shit online, like using my full freaking name as my handle, it's likely some assholes will try and doxx me. Keeping my shit private is my responsibility. Taking ownership of that fact is not victim blaming.

Some ppl don't realize how fucking crazy other ppl are online- they are just naive. So we warn them when they are being naive and could get themselves in trouble. That's it. We don't actually look them up or post their personal shit. . .unless I missed something with all the mod redactions flying around.

And I have no way of knowing if something was redacted bc a user was called insane or if it was redacted because personal info was posted. One of those things is actually a big deal, the other is just a butthurt risk and dumb imo.

  • I just Googled variations of my maiden name and married name, this username and my Pinterest username and found nothing.  Does that mean I'm not real?

I just googled myself.  Apparently other people have my name.  They're all way more successful too.

I only found like two pictures of me, and one of them is from the Myspace I haven't visited in 6 years.  Other than that, nothing can be found.   That's good, I like not existing.

Googling my username gets a lot of my TK posts and, it appears, my polyvore account, which I made after the last thread we had on the subject and then promptly abandoned.

Googling my nickname and my last name gets my LinkedIn.

Googling my full name gets my entire family tree on my maternal grandfather's side all the way back to England in the late 1600s or early 1700s... so maybe let's not share that. Haha.

ETA obviously googling Hello Sweetie gets a lot of River Song, which is fine with me.

Huh. I just Googled my maiden name. My maiden last name is super common, so it almost never comes up with results that are me. Especially because there is a lady who is fairly famous and writes articles/gives talks on Native American issues with my name. And apparently one lady Dr who has the name I would have had if my paternal grandmother had died before I was born - basically my name with my grandma's name as the middle name. My sister and two cousins have that middle name.

That will be the one thing I miss about my common last name. H's last name is so not common, I will be much easier to Google once I officially start changing things.

So good fucking luck with that.

There are also apparently a decent number of women with my name who are a lot less private than I am, so the risk of someone doxxing a total stranger is high.

    That stuff is fucking amazing.
