@KnotHolly would my screenshot been acceptable if I'd blacked out the name of the mod that issued me the warning? I thought about it but figured it would be pretty obvious, since it happened on etiquette and she's the only etiquette mod.

No hard feelings against that mod. I get it, it is a black-and-white clearcut slur. I just thought it was a great example of inconsistency.

Wasn't Ashley's first warning because she changed her signature and a mod got offended thinking it was aimed at her? The current responses are trying to make it sound like it started because Ashley just started randomly spamming middle fingers, but wasn't that the reason? I'm just reading all this agreeing with the regs- clear as mud.....
Yes, Ashley had a gif in her signature with middle finger. A mod stepped up (post-Ashley banning) saying she felt it was directed at her. So she got warning number 1.

Then Ashley started TOS PSA thread about her warning, with a bunch of middle finger gifs. Which others (who aren't banned) participated in posting their own middle fingers. And pointing out they had signatures that said fuck/bitch/some other curse word that newbie SS always seem to think are directed towards them.

However when those newbie SS reported them they are told no that's their signature and it shows up everywhere and is not directed at you. But apparently when a mod does the same thing (thinking something is directed at them when it isn't) the person is made to change their signature.

Because everything is fair and reasonable.

This would also not be allowed. Posting the content of a PM, with or without usernames displayed, is against the TOS.

But it's not a PM, it's a warning. When a mod has already alleged in this thread that people are claiming warnings that haven't actually been issued, what's wrong with being like "no, I really did get warned for this. See?"

    Clear as mud.

Edited because I preemtively yelled at the boxes that are, in fact, working. For now.

  • Just so y'all know, KnotRiley and knotholly aren't logged into the forums 24/7. They're paid employees who work a regular schedule. So they likely won't be back until tomorrow.
But they were able to ban Ashley on a Friday night before a holiday weekend.

Really? This is what you chose to get upset about? Of all the shit in this thread... People kept paging them, so I thought it would be helpful to let people know they aren't logged into the forums 24 hours a day.

And sorry, no. KR and KH don't check in with me every single time they decide to work late or flex their schedule of whatever the they decide to do. Do you want them to check in with you? With the community? To punch in and out on the Tech Board? Of course..that makes sense...

Do you want me to say the same thing everyone else said. I was just mentioning something that no one mentioned previously. I agree with previous posters as you will see from my likes.

I just find it convenient they were able to ban her at night and then drop her thread so it didn't get bumped up. But we have had problems with other posters spamming the board in the past and it's taken close to a week to get it straightened out.

I also find it ridiculous that the Louis CK video Larry posted was against TOS. There was nothing worse in that video than anything else we've discussed in TMI threads.

I can see how you think it's convenient.

However, I was relieved of my CC duties last Tuesday. So what, 10 days now? Before then they didn't have to worry about nights, weekends or holidays because I (in theory) was around.

I'm not at all surprised that the first week of them moderating CC they would be around more often then in the past.  I'm expecting to see them around after hours a little more now they have taken over.

Wow. I had no idea. I thought they were robots, or maybe that XO feeds them meth so they don't have to sleep.

I paged them, not expecting an immediate answer. I wasn't like OMG it's been 5 minutes! People did gripe about a slow response in general, but that's because that is a very typical pattern of behavior.

Ok that's fine and I get where you're coming from. But realistically, their work schedule isn't really a point of contention around here. So they work late? So their boss makes something a priority for them? So they're asked to work Memorial Day weekend?

I get wanting clarity and consistency in the TOS, but pointing how their work schedule just seemed nitpicky to me.

    Hi everyone,

We just wanted you to know we're not trying to ignore this thread. There's a lot of questions that have been asked so we're working on a response to everything right now.

    Thanks for your patience!
Why not just go through the whole thread and simply answer questions one at a time, in a candid manner? It seems kind of convoluted to write one big master post to try to answer all of them. Unless, of course, you need to work on a very vague and canned response.

I can get through a big thread and make responses to several people. I'm doing that right now. It doesn't really take a full day's work.

The thing is, they can't have it both ways. We can't accept that it's cool to ban someone late on a holiday Friday because "they probably work later now because CC has no night/weekend mod" and ALSO decline to respond here because "well after all they work 9-5."

My personal theory is that the Louis CK video described sex between two men. Often gay sex is regarded as being more "vulgar" then straight sex.

For instance on TV, a show that often discusses hetero sex might have a TV-14 rating but if they talk about gay sex in one episode it'll be bumped to a TV-MA rating and have a little title card before hand as a warning.

Remember the episode of The Simpsons where gay marriage was legalized and Homer performed gay marriages and one of Marge's sisters revealed she was a lesbian and marrying a woman? That episode carried a higher rating and was proceeded by a warning of adult content. No other Simpsons episode has ever done that.

Homosexuality is more vulgar then heterosexuality per our society. And based a video that featured nothing different then what we often talk about (and language we often use), was removed I'm going to have to make the assumption that Larry's video was removed because TK agrees that homosexuality is more vulgar then heterosexuality.
  • I'm on vacation in Cancun, so i'm popping in and out. But, I think it's reasonable to assume and makes sense that kH and KR have duties they are required to perform on a daily/weekly basis for XO during normal business hours. Even though being an admin on here is their primary role, they don't have all day to sit on these boards due to meetings, working with tech, responding to other issues that may come up with the forum. However, at night, their time is their time. They can do what they need to do on the boards without having to worry about meetings and other XO things. I know I have a similar work pattern. I have responsibilities during the day to my employer, but I often work from home, at night, not getting paid, to catch up on items without interruption and that are of importance to me.

That being said, I recommend that everyone do as I am doing- sitting back with margarita in hand!

The TOA PSA thread blew up during the day on Friday.  I'm not at all surprised one of them was around to monitor the situation Friday night.  It would have been unfair for them not to monitor a known hot thread.   Especially since they just started that new job responsibility a few days earlier.

I do not know their internal reporting and/or alert system. I do not even know if they have work emails on their smartphones. Heck, I don't even know if they have a smartphone.

That said, with my job I can tell you I get certain alerts on my phone.   I can log onto an app to monitor activity.  However, just because I've responded to an alert doesn't mean I'm actually available for any and all questions.     I've been eating dinner at a restaurant fixing something work related off hours, but not reading, let alone answering, other messages that are out there.     I fix what needs to be fixed and I leave other stuff for my normal business hours.

They just started this last week.  I'm sure it's going to take a little time to figure out how to add the new responsibilities into their work day while still doing the original ones.

  • In regards to posting off-topic gifs, since we have not issued warnings for behavior like this in the past, we handled this case in the same way. Moving forward, we will be more clear about issuing warnings for posts that are meant to disrupt the normal discussion of a thread. We (admins and mods) try to be as consistent as possible with our warnings. If something is toeing the line, but hasn’t been warned for in the past, we will try our best to stay consistent and not warn for it. This is whywe want to create the guidelinesto make everything much clearer on what we will/will not be warning for. I can’t say these will be the only reasons we will have to warn people, but I think it will help to make everything much clearer.

So......Why was I warned for the gifs I posted in TOS PSA on Chitchat?

Anyway, in the spirit of "Good Times" I totally remember a snowflake who thought my sig was "attacking" her back on the PPD sticky we had on Etiquette.
    It was this gif.

  • It sounds like XO group needs more then just Holly and Riley running the show.

Since they are oh so busy and our paging is...obnoxious? Or we shouldn't expect a response? I'm not sure.

Also is XO group housed on the east coast? West coast? Cause I mean, 5pm for me is 8pm for them and I don't need a finger wagging about still paging them "after 5pm" when it's only 4pm my time. Not my fault they live on the east coast.

East Coast. I've been there, and it's a glorious place. I probably wouldn't pay attention to forums either with their view.

Ok, so assuming 9am-5pm as their standard operating hours, I should only page them between 6am-2pm.
  • Being on Pacific Time or AZ time sucks on occasion. I know a lot of my TV shows are spoiled because of it! There isn't much that can be done but move!

Well I mean, or expect mods not to finger wag at you for paging "after 5" when it's not "after 5" where you live because I expect even people on the east coast can figure out how the fuck a time zone works.

ETA: Yeah, uprooting my entire life and the life of my wife just because of time zones is a logical solution.

I think everyone was just trying to point out that they generally work normal business hours. I know i posted earlier that they are usually off at 5 EST to clarify.

ETA: It was more like an FYI rather than a finger wag.

  • .....I'm not going to get an answer for why I got a warning, am I?

I wasn't suggesting you actually move. I complain about the time diff a lot (I live like 30 min or so from you from what I can tell) so I can relate about it being inconvenient.

Did a mod finger wag you? I posted and FYI so people knew they weren't here 24/7...are you referring to that as a finger wag or something else?
