What do you mean by "the real Caitlyn?"

Well to be fair, this is the first time we are hearing her name.   Even at the Diana Swayer interview it wasn't revealed.

So kind-of hard to call her by her name when it wasn't even revealed yet.
No, I get that. My point is that this article is the announcement of her name and it's right there in the title of the article and the URL, so I was just correcting that Bruce isn't on the cover, Caitlyn is, with Caitlyn's name on the cover as well.

  • She looks fab! I'm really happy for her that she can now feel like herself.

and that is kind of my point.

I think Caitlyn looks beautiful and it's a powerful photo.  However, I'm not impressed of ANY photo in VF or any of the other magazines because of air brushing and photoshop.  I do not buy the magazines or look at them online for that reason.

It's cool she choose that as a way to come out, but at the same time I'm not impressed either because I do not think she actually looks like that.
Yeah, I am sick of over-Photoshopping.

Gay, straight, trans, etc. I am an equal opportunity Photoshop hater.

Same here.  I just want to see the real person (meaning true to life, no photoshop, cleaning up, smoothing out, what have you).  If we stop making people look "perfect" in photos in magazines it may help to get individuals to be a bit happier with themselves rather then constantly comparing themselves to magazine pictures.

I would have been more impressed if she came out in the interview with Diane.

She's a transgendered woman on the cover a major fashion magazine.

I'm fucking impressed as shit. Cause there was time that never would have happened. Trans visibility is improving right now and that is fanfuckingtastic in my book. I don't care if they plumped her lips, smoothed the wrinkles, shined up her hair. A fucking out trans person is on the cover of a fucking major fashion magazine. That, all by itself, is fucking amazing.

I never realized how bad this was until we did our engagment pictures. When I got them back from our photographer the line crease under my eyes were smoothed out and gone. IT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE ME! I asked her to go back and fix it. Now I realize every magazine cover never has that eye crease!

yeah I used to model and a lot of photographers would get rid of my freckles. My skin would look super creepy smooth and all one solid color. Did not look natural at all and did not look like me. And they almost always changed my skin tone; I'm naturally really pale and I always ended up looking super tan. One person even changed the shape of my thigh to look totally straight with no curve in it. Fucking weird.

I remember a girl I was friends with in college saw one of the photos and said, "Wow you're flawless!" And it made me feel like crap cuz I was thinking, "but that's not even me. That "flawlessness" is photoshop."

She might not have been ready to at that point. And frankly it's not up to you (or anyone else) when someone is or isn't ready to be completely out. That's their business.

So when you saw the below Vanity Fair cover, you all went on and on about how it's photoshopped? Because I feel like right now it's "Well it'd be more impressive if she wasn't photoshopped so we could see if she really passes for a woman" is what is being said. But hey if you go on and on about photoshopping and wanting to see "real" pictures what would "impress you" more about every single magazine cover than my bad. Maybe you aren't trying to say "lets see if she really passes" but without saying that cause that is a shitty thing to say.

I don't think anyone is saying that at all. If they are, it is going way over my head.

  • I am super excited that this photo is on a major magazine, and that she is willing to do this publicly. The family pretty much defines AW, but using her celebrity to reach people who may be living like she was and to put a face on the trans concept for folks who may not have encountered it before is absolutely fantastic. There is no obligation to be an educator or role model, but the choice to do so is very brave and contributes so much to our society.

I get the feeling that the kids feelings about her deficiencies and failures as a father may be coming off as not supporting her transition. It is also obviously a process for them as well, and I think it is fine if they don't support it. It's important that people hear that they don't need everyone's support and approval to be their authentic selves.

    Go Caitlyn!!

Yeah, no one is saying that at all.

  • I'm of the UO that Photoshop and retouching are great with one MAJOR caveat - don't change skin color or remove things like freckles, along the lines of what Novella mentioned (or lightening darker skin tones...just...no). Also, I'm fine with "smoothing" but not slimming human bodies. I guess what it boils down to is, small "improvements" don't bother me, but dramatically altering how someone looks does.

IMO, I would love if I could look freaking awesome in photos all the time so, please photographers, remove the hyper pigmentation and weird blotches on my skin. As far as smoothing, I have cellulite as do a large portion of people and if I was having professional pictures taken I would love to have those lovely dimples removed, but don't freaking cut down my thighs or change the shape of my hips, that's too much.

I think there is a fine line between making slight changes and drastic retouching.

But back to the real deal, I'm re-stating that she looks fabulous and I am extremely jealous of her cheekbones.

Don't forget all the plastic surgery she had as Bruce to make himself look "perfect."

Plus Annie Leibovitz could make anyone look gorge, lol.

It's a great cover though, I think her expression is really sweet and she looks great.

See the highlighted.  I do not purchase or even read any of those magazines because of the photoshopping.  The only time I even know who is on the cover is when it's in the news, like now.

It's cool there is a transgender on a magazine like VF.   But I can still dislike all the photoshopping done on her and every other cover they ever do.

When I look at that, I'm weirded out by Reese's boob.

And, I'm pretty sure Channing Tatum is looking right at me, saying "Hey, girl".

What she said. Don't make it crazy but frankly a little re-touching I'm kind of meh on. Our wedding photog used photoshop to make my tattoos look a little brighter. She also smoothed some chicken pox scars one of our BMs had on her chest. We still all look just like us. Just ya know....a little amplified.
