Facebook Peddlers

*Insert rant warning here*
Apparently it's a mistake to like peoples' pictures on Facebook these days. A girl I had some classes with in college posted a picture of her stomach (she has been trying to lose weight) and I liked it, because she looks super healthy and great and why the heck wouldn't I?

Now I am getting messages from her all about the plan she used and all the benefits.

She is trying to SELL it to me.

I LIKED THE PICTURE.

I know people sell weight loss shit all the time, among various other things (those jewelry parties? anyone?) and it's driving me crazy.

Anyone else experienced this? Has anyone else done this?

Re: Facebook Peddlers

  • Nobody has done this to me, but I'm surprised they haven't , and it's probably only a matter of time. I have several people on my feed doing Shakeology and those wrap things.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I get this on instagram. I have a few people who will send me DMs trying to get me to buy body wraps or that expensive mascara that doesn't even work.

  • I have a lot of Facebook friends doing this. They sell Younique, Tyra Beauty, Jamberry Nails, ItWorks Wraps, etc.

As much as I get annoyed with their posts, I try to ignore it because for some people, that is how they make a living and at least they are doing SOMETHING. Many of these companies are about empowerment and being your own boss and I support that. Do I buy stuff? Usually, no. However, I think it is amazing that some poeple have made this their business because I know I don't have that type of personality or skills to do so myself.

Ok, so this is actually the one product that had me intrigued for a while...  I forget the name...  it doesn't work??  I am mildly disappointed (even though I likely never would have bought it).
  • Kinda. I commented on a pic once, and the girl started PM'ing me. I thought it was kidna wierd, but we went to HS together, so I thought maybe she wanted to see how I was doing since I commented on her picture. Nope, she was trying to recruit me for Rodan & Fields.

Pretty much all of this for me too.

I've never tried it myself but have heard a lot of rants from people who were pissed about paying that much for a mascara that gave them spidery lashes.

If you are talking about the Younique (fiber lash mascara) kind, I can personally attest that it worked amazingly for me. A lot of people complained the fibers fall in their eyes and a lot of it had to do with them applying it wrong. I love that s hit and I'll paying $30 for mascara that works that good.

I promise I don't sell it, I just really like it. If anyone wants, I can link the tutorial I used that the girl I buy from posted (I don't buy from the girl in the video).

I am happy for people who do this as their job. I am not happy when I am tricked into a weird convo circling around and around the inevitable "do you want to try this" question. It's so sneaky! Basically what happened was exactly what PinkCow described.

ETA: You all may be talking about something other than this, but...

So weirdly, my mom was taking eye medication that had the same ingredients as that eyelash stuff, and while it DID make her lashes longer, they definitely were spidery. Also, there's always that warning about it darkening your eyes (we both have blue eyes) and it DID darken hers. It's slightly humorous because she was only using it on one eye, so one eye had crazy long lashes. It's only a little darker, so it's  not noticeable, but I have a feeling the "may" darken is more like a "will darken."
  • I'm not sure if its that one. I've just heard it being called "that expensive mascara people sell". It might be. I'm glad it worked for you, though. Not every makeup product works for every person so I can see why some would hate it and some would like it.

  • A girl I'm friends with on facebook sells Jamberry, does Passion Parties, Partylite, Itworks... and ALWAYS invites me to virtual parties. I may just have to unfriend her because it's hella annoying.

Yeah, usually when people reach out to me like that, I feel very awkward. I usually just reply, I appreciate it but I'm not interested.

  • I had posted a status once about desperately being in need of a coffee because I had left my travel mug on my kitchen counter that morning.

I got a FB message from a girl I went to highschool with trying to sell me WEIGHTLOSS coffee. Seriously. The message was along the lines of 'Hey! I noticed you are a big coffee drinker, and I have this coffee that I sell that I think you would really like, and could benefit from. blah blah blah'

    I was so insulted.

  • I'm in a fitness group on FB and they had to make a rule gainst sales because of all the people trying to sell people shakes and wraps. I hate it so much. I have nothing against P90X or Insanity; I'm glad you enjoy the workout and it worked for you, but no, I don't want you to be my coach, and I don't want to join your "challenge." I don't want to buy Shakeology.
  • I dislike those. Especially now that they don't even 'host' the parties anymore, they just have a website, and you buy from it for a week or something like that. Um hello, no effort put in AT ALL. But I still don't want to buy your ugly shit haha.

I also seriously hate that mascara. I have only seen 1 person look any good with it, and she did the lightest coat and has literally no lashes. So it just looked like she had a bit of lash. Everyone else I've seen with it looks like they just caked on 19 layers of regular mascara. I feel like it would look the same =\

  • This is super annoying to me. In my circle it's Rodan and Fields, Pure Romance, Stella and Dot, Pink Zebra, some shake thing and some purse thing.

For the people I'm more acquaintance 'friends' with, I just unfollow. But some people I'm actually friends with and I like to follow their personal stuff to I put up with the annoying shit.

I would rather melon ball my eyeballs out than go to one of those parties though. Hell no.

  • I had a FB friend (I only know her through FB, not real life), message me and ask me if I would listen to a sales call recording thing for Arbonne.  She said NO PRESSURE, but if I listened to it and gave feedback, I'd get a free gift.  She just wanted to know if I'd be interested in buying products or selling for them.

Sure, she's a nice woman, no big deal.  I listened to the recording which is like 40 minutes of a lady from Arbonne telling you how great the products are and how great selling them is.  I got back to my friend and told her I really wasn't interested in selling the products (I already have a job that I like and keeps me plenty busy), but that I might be a little interested in buying the products.

Never heard from her again.  Never got a gift.  Weird...

  • I have one woman on my facebook that does passion parties, and that's most of what she posts, but I don't have too much of a problem with it because that's how I met her.

Right now though the trend on my feed is Thrive, or whatever it's called. It's like a shake + a patch you wear and it supposedly gives you all kinds of energy and helps with weight loss. Big check in the No column on that one for me.

  • Still better than all the GoFundMe links in my feed. How about no? At least the peddlers are willing to give me some crap for my money :\

  • My cousin does Thrive. Still unclear what it ACTUALLY does, but her posts annoy the crap out of me.

Jamberry is super annoying, but Beachbody is far and away the worst. Stop posting sweaty selfies EVERY DAY!!

In the past few months I've seen some of these asking for money to pay off credit card debt, and to help with moving expenses because "they lost track of time and forgot to save."

  • Essential Oils.... I have not one, not two, but THREE FB friends who post something about their oils on a daily basis. One uses her kids - always a picture of one of them holding up a bottle saying something like "Allergies? It's peppermint/citrus/whatever to the rescue!" Ugh.

  • This will be the only time I mention this, but I do sell (and I use the term lightly) one of the MLM's mentioned and I have never sought out people to try and have them purchase from me.  I get messages from people interested and those I respond to, but I never am initiating the conversation.  I also very rarely post MLM specific posts where people know that I actually sell it.

I am only really a rep for the company because I get a discount on the products I like.  If someone is interested then great, I'll help you out along the way and make some extra cash, but its not a priority for me.

  • I never have this problem. My friends who do direct sales are polite, don't tell everyone about it, and don't turn their FB into nothing but selling. Most of them have a separate page, not their profile, for selling products.

The only thing I get once in awhile, once every other month or so, is when a friend who does not sell the product hosts an online party and invites their entire friends list. A bit annoying, but no biggy, I just leave the group.

I don't have any friends who do what I feel are rip offs - shakeology, wraps, insert other quick weight loss thing. The people I know who do direct sales do essential oils and Mary Kay (which is all I use for makeup and skin care, love it!) and that's about it.
  • I defriended someone over excessive Arbonne selling and she was hurt!! I finally had to refriend her because I kept hearing through the grapevine that she was upset. Seriously, I'm not that cool. Wtf?
Also, fuck that online party business. I outright "decline" those invites. Not even ignore, DECLINE.

One chick sells jamboree but at least she links it to normal status updates. Like, "rocked my presentation at the conference! Glad my nails looked the part." She's cool.

  • I think direct sales are something a lot of people try when they're younger. Thank God, by the time they're my age it's done.
I really dislike people who presume on friendship to try to sell me shit. It's just fucking rude. It's rude to put any friend in the uncomfortable position of saying no, and feeling bad about saying no.

If people actually made money doing any of  this, there would be a lot more pink Cadillacs on the road.

yeah, I do not get any of direct sales stuff.  I do have one HS friend who sells Avon.  She isn't too bad with advertising.    Like once a month there is a little blurb, but nothing too obnoxious.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Red Box.  Everyone's doing Red Box.

I have consultant accounts for Young Living oils and Arbonne, but just because I'm cheap and don't want to pay full price.  I've never said anything about it on any social media before.  I got pressured into being a Partylite consultant when I was younger, and that scarred me for life.
