How many did you check off?

I had 49... I actually expected more.  A lot of that is thanks to my parents doing a lot of road trips growing up. I've been through most of the country, but haven't made it to the northwest yet, so that cost me several of them. A couple of my favorite cities were on there though... Cape May, NJ holds a special place in my heart, as does Savannah.

I'm hoping to go there when we go to Wildwood in September.  I've been on the ferry, but I don't think that counts!

Any must sees?  I don't know if DH will be into it since his mother was so against it when we were in Wildwood last year.

Cape May was always one of those vacations where I could actually relax... that was our go to vacation spot growing up. We would usually drive up to Wildwood for a day and Atlantic City for a day. I love the old houses and enjoy just walking (or rent a surrey or bikes) around the historic areas looking at those homes (the old houses in Cape May are actually the reason I decided to become an architect).  The beaches in Cape May are awesome and very well maintained... they usually show up on most of the "best beaches in US" lists.  Amazing sunsets at Sunset Beach at the southern tip... they do flag lowering ceremony there each night during summer (all flags flown are from veteran caskets and donated)... it gets crowded, but it's worth it.  The pedestrian mall & boardwalk area are nice to walk through for a day, but you can only spend so much time in tourist souvenir shops.

  • 55. I thought it was kind of odd that Philbrook Museum was on there. I had my senior pics taken there. Took Fi there for the first time not too long ago.

  • 66. About a third of them I visited on a 20-state, 6-week road trip in college, another third on my 8th grade trio to Washington DC and surrounding areas.

  • Only 28. I haven't been to New York or California which seemed to have a lot of extra checks.

I was surprised to see Galena Main Street. Galena is a big deal where I live in Illinois, but wouldn't have thought it would make a list like this.

@WinstonsGirl Same. I didn't get why they were considered separate either, but I was happy for the extra check I guess.

@julieanne912 I definitely wouldn't plan on making Rushmore the focus of your visit, but it's fun to see if you're making the trip to the Black Hills. Crazy Horse is right there and that monument IS impressive, even though it isn't even close to completion. The size of it really gets you, and they have a pretty decent museum to go with it. The camping out there is beautiful, there's great trout fishing, and last time I was there we went to Wind Cave which was a TON of fun! The cave systems in the Hills are all pretty interesting, but I think Wind Cave was my favorite. Then of course there's the drive through Needles Highway and Custer State Park.

And go to Wall Drug.  It's totally cheesy and touristy, but it was actually a lot of fun.  We took photos of all the billboards we could find advertising it too, for the scrapbook.

Yes! After 300 miles of billboards, we HAD to stop there. It's so strange. I still have a mug and ashtray combo w/a painting of the Badlands on it. And I put a "Have you dug Wall Drug" sticker on my mom's car, and it's still on the bumper 10 years later.

Omg I would never recommend that place ever. I mean, unless you REALLY gotta see the cheese. Plus Wall Drug is a good hour and a half drive from Rushmore.

Then again, this is coming from a person who hates Niagara Falls because of all the tourist traps so take what I say with a grain of salt.

  • Ahh.  We were based out of Rapid City for several days.  That day, we did some caving (Wind Cave, I think), then drove through Badlands Natl. Park, so we were already over there.

There is a similar attraction in the east coast, called "South of the Border".  It defines the word "kitch".

@cmgragain I was wondering. I had never heard of Wall Drug but I was thinking to myself it's sounds awfully similar to South of the Border which I've been to a handful of times.

  • I got 22 which was more than I expected. I've been to Washington DC and NYC so that helped my numbers. I've only really been to southeast states.

South of the Border was always my favorite place on the way to Myrtle Beach when I was little because we got fireworks and icecream.

  • 33... about 90% of it all in the northeast. I need to head West! and South!

  • 62. Most museums and sculptures than national parks. So much to see!!
  • Seeing all the national parks is my bucket list. Museums and art galleries and shit bore me.

H and I didn't go to Wall Drug, but we laughed at the 9,000 miles of billboards and drove by to go to the Harley across the street. It's huge! It's right on the other side of the highway from the Badlands entrance  so not out of the way if you're going there anyway.

I've been doing that since I bought my first house. It makes it so fun to put up the tree every year and remember all of my/our trips! It also has an added bonus of having a collection that you don't have to have dust all the time.

  • 35, which is quite a bit more than I thought I'd have. Mostly because I was up in the National Capital Region for a few years. Almost everything on the list I could connect to something I did while active duty. The only thing that disappointed me was that they had Harvard on there, but not Yale. Yale is definitely prettier and at least as historically important.

    Did you go to Sturgis???

I got 64, but I seriously question whoever put this list together.

  • We drove through it several times.  It was about a week or two before the rally, so we didn't stop cos it was packed.  We thought we'd look a little out of place.  ;)  Plus, we didn't know what was there other than the rally

  • Girl on my FB just drove her bike from MA all the way out o Sturgis. The scenery at Badlands looks downright amazing!

We do a mix of Christmas ornaments and mantle decorations since some places are impossible to find a Christmas ornament.

  • I clearly need to travel more. I only got 17 and that was mostly thanks to the fact that I live in NY and I have family in Puerto Rico.

  • I got 16. I'm actually really surprised it's that low. I feel like I've done a lot of traveling and been to quite a few state parks. But apparently not ones that are ultimate wonders. I'm also surprised some of them are so vague - MN north country? That's a really big area. Where do I have to go to be considered "north".

  • 50. Drviing across the country took care of a few of them.
