There are occasions where it's ok to throw yourself a party where you'll be the guest of honor and showered with presents...  those occasions just happen to be children's birthday parties and not wedding showers.

aurianna Completely agree that throwing your own shower is awful..

Even your example of an acceptable time is not the guest of honor throwing the party, it would be the parents of the child, so Technically still not thrown for them self..

    True enough!
Though do think teenagers are allowed a bit of wiggle room in this area (so still juveniles!). But then maybe that was just in my circle growing up.
If it's not even ok for children's birthday parties then definitely not for showers. :)

true, but even as a teenager in most cases your parents are still footing the bill.. or hosting in their home.

Agree. No arguments here. Just ryanandjoe4 clarifying/correcting my analogy.

Unless you mean people trying to negate KnottieNumbers' statement about throwing one's own shower being ok. That's just important for us to do, because people lurk, and future readers might not realize that it isn't ok unless someone says something. *nod*

Wedding showers should never be expected.  You are not entitled to one.  My daughter didn't have one.  I had one, but it was all my mother's friends, not mine.  I felt awkward.
You are not entitled to a bachelorette party, either.  You only have one if someone offers to plan it for you.

These are all frills.  They are not an important part of your wedding.  The important part of your wedding is that you are marrying the love of your life, you have a legal license, a qualified officiant, and legal witnesses.  Everything else - attendants, flowers, music, dancing, the white dress and veil - is just frosting on the cake.  None are necessary for a proper wedding.
The one thing that you absolutely must do is to have a reception after your ceremony (on the same day) where you offer your guests refreshment, and you thank each guest, personally, for coming to your wedding.
If anyone does plan a party for you (shower or bachelorette), you cannot invite anyone who will not be invited to your wedding.

  • I did not have a bridal party, but still had a shower. I also hosted a shower for one of my close friends who did not have a bridal party.
