Zombie etiquette?

Can someone please explain zombie thread etiquette? I know it's different from TK rules for automatically closing threads, but I don't know the cutoff...is it dead after two weeks inactive? A month?

Personally, I try not to post on something after a few days because I don't want to be called out, but I think some clarity on what "old" is would help us newer members.

    There isn't really a set time.   Unofficially if it's older than 6 months the mods will close the thread.

      Although I side-eye random responses more than 3 weeks out.  If it's the OP or someone else who has been MIA  and finally came back to answer a question/give an update then I'm good.






    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    I side eye responses to threads that are more than 2-3 weeks old, but I consider a zombie thread one that is more than 3 months, or one that is obsolete (ex: Bride comes with a problem for her wedding that's in 14 days, and now it's two months later and some random is commenting on the thread, obviously without reading it). I don't mind when the OP comes to update months later.  I love hearing follow-up stories.

    With all the newbie brides coming onto the Knot, I think this is an excellent topic.  It has been bothering me that three month old threads are being resurrected for no good reason.

    Way back, I requested the auto-close - and (shocking) it was implemented!  I think they auto-close after 6 months though.  Generally, I don't think most threads should be closed just because someone comments on it a month or so later.  If that's shunned upon, the TK gods should change the auto close from 6 months to 1 month (or whatever).   Mods, can that request be put in?

    Auto close after 1 month seems WAY too early. Just let the thread die and go off on a another page....but 1 month is just...no I don't agree. I personally don't even like auto-closing after 6 months, but I understand the reasons behind it.

    No.  I thought it was going to be about how you are supposed to treat zombies at parties or what not.  Hence why I clicked on it because I wanted to know who had a person in their lives that believed they were a zombie.

    This is where I am too.  First page threads are okay.  Some boards are slower than others and a thread that hasn't been commented on in a month may still be valid and helpful to participants and lurkers alike.  And with some of the more busy boards, a thread that hasn't been commented on in a week is old news unless the OP is coming back with an update.

    TBH, it doesn't really bother me.  I don't think commenting on old threads is particularly useful, but I don't feel the need to call people out for doing so.  If I'm not interested, I move on.  It's TK, there's almost always something better coming down the pike.

    This. It's not useful but not super bothersome. I'll personally try and avoid replying to threads not on the first page, as a rule of thumb.

     Oops! I didn't realize there was a rule about this. My bad. I just responded to a thread in "Wedding Party" board that was posted in October. I didn't realize it was bad etiquette.

    I agree, I think 1 month is a little too soon.  But as soon as someone shouts zombie thread, a mod will come in and close it.  If that's the case, then why not have autoclose?  Otherwise, it's mods just picking and choosing what to close based on whoever shouts zombie.

    I just think whatever the decision is regarding time limits, it should be standardized (and autoclosed) so mods are not closing threads because a user is annoyed that something was resurrected.

    Unless the board is super hot, I agree with the "past the 1st page" "rule". 

    Sometimes people post questions months in advance of their wedding, and perhaps another poster stumbles upon and has personal experience with the question- that is still helpful, even if the post has been "dead" for awhile.

    But I agree that's annoying when a post from last year gets dragged up, or a post where the wedding has already happened. Mostly because I usually check to see what's "new", and if old thread get resurrected, it gets confusing.
