    I thought the reason people traditionally kept the top tier was to have at the christening of their first child? No idea where I got this idea - anyone know if it's true? Traditionally speaking, not necessarily these days!
    This may be British - I've always heard this was the tradition as well
    Maybe - in saying that I don't actually know anyone that has ever done it. Must be a throwback.

    Oh yeah, definitely! I don't know anyone who has done it, but that's always the explanation I've heard of the origin of saving the top layer of the wedding cake. Of course back in the day it was also more traditional to have fruit cake, rather than sponge, which is easier to keep for longer.

    We saved ours and ate it a couple of days after our anniversary. It tasted fine and took us a few days to eat the whole thing.

    We didn't because top tier we gave to wedding party/family and rest were cupcakes, but we're going to have a cupcake {or 2 .... because cupcakes!} from that company for our anniversary :)

    Our bakery offered a complimentary fresh cake for the first anniversary. I think that's a fabulous idea and far better than eating aged cake, no matter how well preserved. More bakeries should do that. I ended up eating most of it as DH didn't really want it, haha.

     So this very timely article was on Mentalfloss today!  It says in Victorian times the top layer was saved for the baby's christening cake!  There are some other goodies too!

    We saved ours and I wrapped it like it was gold in Fort Knox. It was chocolate/caramel/turtle and the bite I had at our reception was awesome. Honestly - it was still really good on our anniversary.

    The hall packed all out leftover favors, etc. in a box for us. We didn't know the cake was in there until we got back from our honeymoon a week later.

    My parents froze theirs and forgot it was in the freezer. I found it when I was about six or seven.

    All I can think of whenever I see the title of this thread "Cake After Wedding" is.... cake now?

    After my first wedding, we had a lot of extra cake.  My mom sliced it into 12 pieces so we could defrost a piece each month during our first year.  It always tasted good.


    This time around, we are having a very small wedding and just a tiny cake, so wont be saving anything.

    That's a super catchy song, but it always makes me want cake at extremely inopportune times (like, say, when I am in traffic at 7 in the morning).

    Our bakery is giving us a free 6" cake in our wedding flavor (COCONUT!!! Yum! for our anniversary, so we aren't saving the top tier.
