Re: Knotty Republican Primary

  • I'm not a republican, but I am SO relieved that Rubio is winning this highly-scientific poll... Cruz and Trump both scare the shit out of me, and Rubio is really the only candidate of the three that I could see being a good president.

  • I'm not Republican either, but I voted for Kasich because despite predicting a Rubio nomination a year ago, I can't figure out how Kasich isn't winning more.  He's freaking hugging crying people everywhere FFS!

I'm not really a republican either, but I actually like Kasich the most if I had to choose from them.

  • Jeb! (Hillary really but he was my pick)

I feel bad for Jeb... He just seems like a sad and confused puppy every time he is on camera.

I actually like Kasich too, but since he doesn't look like he has any chance of winning, Rubio is second-least-terrible.

  • Proudly voted for Rubio in Texas today.  Hoping he can pull ahead of Cruz and stop the Donald soon.
  • As I get older, I realize that most people vote based off of short blurbs and news spots they see on tv or articles from highly bias sources rather than taking the time to get to know the candidates' platforms, voting records if they have a public one, etc.  While I won't broadcast publicly whom I voted for in today's primaries, I am secure in my choice and proud to support that candidate.
  • I'm a disgruntled person in a caucus state (someone had to stay home and watch the kids - no - I wasn't going to haul my kids to the madhouse that was our precinct caucus nor is it really appropriate)...  If we'd had a sitter for the kids (MIL was vomiting last night so - yea - no, not taking my kids to her place anytime soon!), I probably would have knuckle-glassed this one with a hold my nose and vote for...
  • I wish Kasich was doing better in the polls.

  • I voted Rubio in this poll but will probably caucus for Cruz on Saturday. I much prefer Rubio but I think Cruz is really the only one with a fighting chance against Trump. I just feel like Trump running was supposed to be this big joke and it was really funny until everyone is now realizing he's probably going to win the nomination...

  • I voted for Rubio in this poll (will vote for him in two weeks in NC) and have liked him since the beginning. If Rubio drops out, I will go with Cruz.

I have a question for other Republican Knotties:
-If Trump wins the GOP nomination, will you vote for him or the Democratic nominee? Or will you vote third party or write someone in?

I used to say from the beginning that I would vote for whoever the GOP nominee was because it was better than the Democratic option. While I still can't see myself voting for Bernie or Hillary, I also can't support Donald Trump. He wasn't as bad in the beginning but he is just beyond saving and does not represent my views of the Republican party one bit.

  • When the time comes to vote I'll cast it for Rubio.   I like Kasich but I don't think he has what it takes.

Donald Trump scares the shit out of me.   That I know people who are planning to vote for him makes me fear those people - some of whom I love.
  • I also am curious as to who the 3 write in candidates are!

I have no idea what I'll do if/when this happens. I live in a late primary state so usually it is already decided by then, though maybe this year will be different. But for the general election, if it is Trump v Hillary/Bernie, idk if I try to decide who is the lesser of 2 evils or just vote for some independent person who found their way on the ballot knowing that I don't want to vote for either of these options.

As a lifelong liberal leaning Democrat, I'm sincerely sad for the Republican party. I'm trying to gain insight as to how so many Republicans support this outrageous, hot tempered, rude, bigot (Trump). He so busy hurling insults that he hasn't bothered to outline his policies. What do we know about Trump?

  • Thank you @banana468 for answering. I have observed the same with the one FB friend that I have who is Republican.   I won't comment further because I don't want to start a debate on the TKRepublican primary board. Both parties need to respect each other and listen to each other's ideas if we want to move forward.

  • Agreed.  The biggest issue I'm seeing is that many baby boomers are seeing serious increases in health care  costs at a time they were wanting to retire.   Their out of pocket expenses and ability to see specialists as they go on Medicare are a big problem.

And I do think we need a change in the system.

I do NOT think Donald Trump will bring anything positive.    I also think he'll be in over his head.
  • Trump is a student of the media.  That is why he can and will do well in any party he runs for.  Trust me, if he wanted to run as a Democrat, he would have been able to do so probably just as well.  He's spent a lifetime with one foot firmly in each aisle.

While I don't disagree that the Southern Strategy does focus on and paint Republicans with a very ugly, unflattering brush, I think the result of the last three elections is the failure of the GOP to find a way to unite the establishment, the tea party, the extreme right wing Christians, and the anti-establishment.  I may not agree with 99% off the parties platform, but most republicans are not the racist, uneducated stereotype that the Trump supporters highlight.  Most are just hard working people who want to pay less taxes and empower non-profits to pick up the slack.

The Tea Party saw this coming, and jumped on it.  But instead of taking a more Libertarian approach, they attached themselves to the extreme right wing of the party (traditionally where most of the money is too).  Had McCain and Romney been able to run as the moderates they are, they would have fared much better in the last few elections.  To @banana468 's point, Romney was the governor who oversaw the most successful health care reform to date, and he was not even allowed to campaign on that because the currently strategy is "denounce, denounce, denounce!"

If the GOP does not win this cycle, I think and hope, we'll see a resurgence as a stronger, more unified, and more moderate party that goes back to traditional conservative values:  small federal government, more power to the states.

Also a lifelong Democrat. I do not understand the support for Cruz or Trump at all. To me, Cruz is just as bad if not worse than Trump. Trump is unpredictable and lies constantly. I really do not know at this point what he would do as president. I doubt I would like what Trump would do but I still feel there is just this tiny chance that Trump is pulling one over on the populous as some kind of bizarre performance art.

On the other hand I know what Cruz would do - he would attempt to impose his own religious beliefs on a country founded on religious liberty. He would continue to widen the economic divide in our country. His own party knows him and detests him.

I am very sad for Republicans but I also think the Trump phenomena has been brought on by their party's own actions. The GOP has pandered for years to low-income, uneducated white people by fear-mongering and bible beating in an effort to keep those voters in a party that consistently works against their interests. Trump has found the secret sauce recipe they've been using and is using it against them. My H is a Republican who is now saying he will vote for Hillary over Trump or Cruz - trust me when I say that is a shocking development.

I am super interested in what people who support Trump or Cruz have to say about why they are doing so.
I SO agree on the bolded. Part of me wants to think Trump's campaign is all some long con, though I am not sure who is conning whom at this point...

Some teeny, tiny part of me is curious to see what would happen if Trump won - it would be a new low for our country, and it may be an interesting shit show. There would be nowhere to go but up.

I usually respect people's political choices, and despite being a pretty liberal democrat I understand and respect the republican viewpoint. What I still do not understand are people who actually think Trump would make a good president. He has proven time and time again that he is a liar with zero understanding of how the government works. Cruz also scares me for ideological reasons, but at least he has political experience...
