Summer Olympics!

Re: Summer Olympics!

  • Just watched it too. I think Lochte's hair had a bad chlorine/bleach reaction. I can't imagine it's that splotchy on purpose.

Unpopular opinion (please don't hate me)...I'm tired of Michael Phelps. I get it, he's got a bajillion medals and he's the best swimmer since ever and baby Boomer is super cute...but we do have other swimmers on our team, who maybe want to be photographed and interviewed sometimes too.

DID YOU JUST WATCH THE WOMEN'S 100M FREESTYLE!??!?! Woot!

I think the Phelps talk and interviewing is a bit much yes. That's where I usually tune out (and post on here ;) ). But his performance cannot be denied. It is amazing to me to see a human body capable of what he does.
  • Yes I did! The look on her face was priceless. That's the stuff I love watching. I understand, he's amazing. I just get tired of hearing about it.

I also feel like if I were an athlete in a different sport, I'd get tired of hearing about his medal count. Swimming seems to kind of stack the deck as far as #s go. I'm sure there are fantastic amazing athletes on, say, the volleyball team, but they have the opportunity for max 1 medal per olympics. That doesn't make them lesser athletes though.

Maybe I'm just in a mood.

  • I love watching Oleksiak realize she's won a medal, cos she takes so long to look.  And CBC just compared Phelps to her, so that was pretty awesome (Phelps closes like Oleksiak, or something along those lines).  And so fitting that our first gold was won by her.  Hell yeah!!

Her and  were so sweet when they realized it. I love how supportive the athlete can be to each other. Simone's face was priceless and those are my favorite Okympic moments...watching the first time gold winners win!

I loved Simone Biles response to being compared to Michael Phelps..."I'm the first Simone Biles."

I agree, the Phelps love gets overwhelming but last night was crazy. He was a full body length in front of his competition and was 8th at the turn!

  • So for the first few days, my nbc had no volume (I'm a Comcast customer.  'nuff said).  I turned it on yesterday and miraculously had it! Not on commercials, but whatevs.   So maybe that's why I'm not tired of hearing about Phelps.  I haven't heard much about him until yesterday!

    also;

    yup.png 104.2K

  • I live-streamed gymnastics yesterday from work (shhhhh). Definitely started tearing up after Raisman finished on floor and then after Biles' final score was announced.
Then coverage went to Mustafina hugging her teammate who had completely bombed beam and floor.... and then it went to the Chinese who didn't medal... tears, tears and more tears!

I agree with PP that the swimming deck is really stacked for medal-winning. Yay for Phelps for getting so many medals, but not everyone has that opportunity either, so I don't think it's really so fair either to exclaim over the number.

Have you seen The Onion's articles? Hilarious, like the one saying Phelps drowned. What good are those lifeguards? Hahah.

  • Ahh!!  I just woke up and we've won another silver!!  Didn't the IOC realize I was sleeping till 8this morning and postpone the race so I could watch it live??  ;)  I think we need to call this the Rio LadyLympics up here in Canada.  Go take a seat boys.  The women will show you how it's done  :D

I didn't read that Onion article.  But I saw the one where Lochte did an "interview" saying he thought Rio's water was really wet this year, and he didn't remember it being this wet.  he was drenched! LOL

Yeah, I get what you're saying about the medals being stacked.  Especially if you qualify for every single one of the single and team swimming events

words - because I had to write "single single" together and it didn't look right.

  • Ahhh!!!  Another gold for Rosie!!  And I missed the finals, cos I thought they were on a different day, so I was out painting the fence again.  I did catch qualification though.  We have friends down there watching, as he is married to Rosie's sister, so it was pretty cool to see them on tv during the qualification round with her parents

I agree, kind of sucks for those team sports where they play so many rounds to win one possible medal.

I haven't watched it yet, but the women's 10 000m was crazy! Sub 30 minutes! Holy crap.

I'm watched a replay online of Rosie's final.

@thisismynickname, yes I was so excited for Aly! She's my favorite gymnast and I've been following her. I was so happy she took silver because she is just amazing and one of the reasons she came back was for the all around. The bronze tie break in London was kind of unfair, because they don't do that at other major competitions (World Championships, for example). I was so happy for her. I expect she'll take silver on floor too and likely could medal on beam (I think she qualified for those finals but I can't remember).

I felt kind of bad for Gabby. I think the two per country rule is stupid. I can kind of get the IOC's or FIG's or whoever it is reasoning that it gets more countries in the finals and helps their country's programs, but I don't think it's a good enough reason to do it. When I play a game or sport, I want to win or medal or place high because I'm better than everyone else, not because someone kicked out people who were better than me. If I were Aliya Mustafina, the medal would feel tainted because I'd know that possibly the only reason I won it (who knows, maybe Gabby wouldn't have done as well in the finals as she did in qualifying) is because girls who were better than me weren't allowed to compete.

ETA: never mind, Aly didn't qualify for beam finals.

I don't feel bad for Gabby. I feel bad for Laurie Hernandez, who beat Aly Raisman in the trials and did much better than Gabby but didn't even get a chance to try for the all around finals. Gabby' lucky she made the team at all.

I don't feel bad about the 2 per country rule, as most other sports have similar rules in place (though I think swimming is 3 for example).  Most are just qualified before the Olympics occur.  Track, for example, you can only enter a certain number of athletes in each event from each country, they make those decisions before the games and not during a qualification at the Olympics

I agree. I thought Laurie should have been the other person to compete for the all around, and I was quite surprised Gabby made the team. I feel bad for Gabby that she was picked to compete for the all around and beat everyone but Simone and Aly and didn't make the finals.

I hope Laurie sticks with it and tries to make Tokyo. I think she could! I just heard she turned pro and definitely plans to stick with gymnastics for awhile.
