TGIW

Re: TGIW

  • Ugh, I just overhead a coworker/friend who voted for Trump complain that she wishes there were more positive political news and all the negativity is so draining.  Well, maybe if you didn't vote in a fascist egomaniac who is ruling through EO instead of legislative channels we'd have better things to discuss than limiting reproductive rights, decimating sacred burial grounds and Muslim bans.

The kicker is I was just logging in to say I'm having a hard time getting over the Trump hump.  And I think it's because he's doing everything through an order that he could pass legislatively so it's a lot all at once.  H's cousin is looking for jobs in the Netherlands because they don't believe her science grant will be refunded, H is super morally deflated by the DeVos nomination, and in a memo leaked to The Hill, I just learned one of the departments on his chopping block in the next 45 days is the Civil Rights Department at the DOJ. You know, the people investigating our complaint from when the hospital discriminated and retaliated against my dad last month.

I am, too. It sucks because my students have (very legitimate) questions, my sister keeps texting me like "can he really do [insert crazy thing]?", and all my feeds are Trump craziness. One of my friends/colleagues posted last night, "I'm having a hard time prioritizing my outrage", and so true.

And then an anti-choice activist trolled me saying I supported child murder. Super fun. I'm exhausted. And it's only day 5.

    *blink blink*

Can he even do that?  How would that not take legislative action to do?  And even with the House being full of the crazy, Republican Senators tend to take a more long term view and don't always play in.

I'm not sure my Googlefu can even handle it.

That would be done through Congress.  They put together a budget called the Skinny Bill to cut 10 trillion dollars in funding spending and they're circulating it for support on the Hill.  That's where the NEA cuts are originating from too.

I love this quote and am going to steal it.  It's a great way to describe why I feel so overwhelmed.  There is just so much I'm outraged about, on numerous fronts.

@kimmiinthemitten, and this info just added another piece to my outrage :(.  Sure.  I suppose it is a lot easier to "slim the budget" when one is not concerned with protecting the life, liberty, and happiness of others.

  • Sooo...my brother who didn't bother showing up to the wedding, call to acknowledge or apologize for his absence and couldn't even bring himself to thumbs up a mother!ucking photo on Facebook just changed his profile pic to one of the two of us from a couple of Christmas' ago.

I'm guessing I'm 24 hours away from a money request....anyone want to take the over or under?
    image
  • @kimmiinthemitten  - is he normally that transparent??  My guess is by the end of the week if that's the case!

  • @ro041 yes, he's a struggling drug addict who disappears when he's not in active recovery.  I'm his number one go to for everything. I got involved in NarAnon to learn how to detach but am just still very, very angry about the wedding.

His passively trying to butter me up with an old pic makes it worse, not better.  Grow a pair and say "I'm really sorry, that was shitty of me," and accept it when I'm still not ready to speak to you.

  • @kimmiinthemitten - I totally get it.  I would be salty about the wedding for a long time too.  You deserve a very honest and sincere apology.

  • I have been on my feet out in the field since 730.  I got back to my desk about 10 minutes ago.  My feet and back ache like none other, but my hardass boss told me I was "phenomenal" today so yay pat on the back for me.  Especially since he spent the first 45 minutes of my day challenging my plan and activities for the day.  FitBit says I've gone over 15,000 steps, not including the brief walk I went on this morning that ended the moment I heard a pack of canines howling.  I don't know if coyotes howl, or if there are actual honest to god wolves in the area, but it was like something out of a movie and I thought I was gonna get bit by a werewolf or something.  Creepy AF, for sure.

@CharmedPam, I don't think my favorite game ever, F.E.A.R (First Encounter Assault Recon), is available for Xbox One (Dear Microsoft, IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD BE, if it isn't), but I believe Dead Space is, which is also pretty creepy. I can't play either alone, or in the dark, but I try hard. I think Dead Space 2 has a multiplayer option.

@mrsconn23 - I don't think it's her voice.  I tried to get through an episode hosted by a comedian (I forget who) and I couldn't do it.  It's a bummer because I really wanted to like it!

@Heffalump - do you have any recommendations since we like the same types of podcasts?  Re: the Buddha episode.  I listened to it and then made FI listen to it because he used to live in Oakland.  He said he used to run by the statue regularly but had no idea why it was there!

    Edit: Words

In addition to those already mentioned, I really like The West Wing Weekly.  HUGE (yuuuge!) fan of the NPR Politics podcast.  Planet Money is great--if it doesn't sound like it, just give it a try.  I don't know how, but they make everything interesting, and they keep it light.  (I was literally texting DH one morning with "OMG, you have to listen to the latest PM about the birth of the Federal Reserve!")

Invisibilia and Embedded were interesting, but neither of them have had new episodes in months.  But if you haven't listened before, you can always listen to the existing episodes.  And although I am neither a Disney hater nor a lover, I am a big fan of The Unofficial Guide's Disney Dish.  Jim Hill rambles all over the place, but his stories are often hilarious and entertaining.

S/O podcasts, anyone know anything about Serial season 3?  I've read vague rumors periodically, but nothing confirmed.

@levioosa, vibes for a speedy kitty recovery!

I don't think we have wolves anywhere nearby (much to Wooz's chagrin), so I'm guessing coyotes?  We hear them a lot by us, and I'm pretty sure they're just about everywhere around here.

Wooz wanted to go to GSMNP specifically to see wolves, so we Googled and learned that they were extinct there, and that efforts to reintroduce the red wolf had failed.  Womp-womp.  She decided she'd settle for a bear, but we weren't lucky enough to spot one on that trip.  Maybe next time.

Now I was just reading he was making plans for the 2,000 mile wall along the US./Mexican border.  He doesn't know what it will cost.  Probably $8B (statement made in his campaign).  But that's okay, because he is going to make Mexico pay us back.  Mexico's response, "Wait, what?  No, we're not paying for your wall."  Of course, I added the first two words for humor.  But the rest was pretty much their response.

Is this a thing now?  Can I carry this over to my personal life?  Can I just bill random people/organizations if they are remotely related to something I bought?

He is also threatening to cut funding to major cities that are primarily Democratic have any kind of laws in place to help protect illegal immigrants.

8 billion dollars.  For a useless, pointless wall.  90% of which will probably be in the harsh wastelands of the desert where nobody goes.  I grew up 60 miles from the Mexican border.  There are already walls and checkpoints at the major points of passage.  And that's just talking about illegal immigrants from Mexico.  A wall doesn't stop someone from coming into the U.S. with a visa, and then just not returning to their home country.

All that wasted money, while a serious health crisis is going on in our country and funding is being cut for educational grants and the above mentioned Civil Rights Dept. at the DOJ and I'm sure a host of other important departments/govt. agencies.

I feel like I'm in a bad movie.  That I would delete when I was halfway through because the plot line was just so ridiculous and outlandish.

Sorry y'all.  I know I've been ranting a lot lately.

Yeah, but my situation is legit.  I need a new fence.  Can I get it done and bill my neighbors?  It benefits them too....

On a serious note, this reminded me that I really do have a save up for a new fence this spring/summer....

Haha, that is pretty legit.  Though I've heard of neighbors going halfsies on a fence.  Usually it's when no fence exists at all and both neighbors want one.

If you're friends with them and they could take a joke, I'd put the receipt or invoice in their mailbox with a note that said, "Trump says you have to pay me back for this."

I haven't heard anything about Season 3.  Season 2 was.......not as compelling as Season 1 (for obvious reasons.  It's hard to live up to a sensation).  But you best believe I will be listening the minute it comes out.

  • I had shingles pop up on my face today. So today sucks. This is my 5-6 time with shingles. I've had the vaccine (not that it has been proven to help someone post shingles outbreaks or someone of my age). I can't go to work until it settles down so I'm at home feeling lousy and irritated. I really love my job and hated going home today but don't want to infect anyone who hasn't had chicken pox or those ladies at work that are pregnant,

I don't *think* any of the Fatal Frame games it that platform, but I have to say they are the bestest, scariest games ever.  Scary enough that I never finished Crimson Butterfly because I couldn't play it home alone in the apt.

    ------
I am waiting for a date announcement for the scientist march.  I am trying to not just throw a blanket over my head and cry.
You realize that all of this "hold everything' means that no one knows if there's any effing funding for water issues in Flint, right?
And all of the 'no immigrants from all of these countries' things hits a lot of people there too.

Didn't you hear, the water at the Plant is good and the Snyder administration closed the case [meanwhile continuing to ignore that the pipes, not the plant are the problem].

  • @ernursej oh I am so sorry!! I've heard shingles are horrible. I hope you get better soon.

  • @thefanciestbeckler Shingles are horrible. This is time 5-6 and I've had the vaccine because infectious disease doesn't know what to do with me. Clearly my body and shingles are tight and like to hang out together more frequently than they should.
