My premium spiked dramatically. I had to drop down two plans. I was paying $220/mo for an amazing plan. It jumped to $450 this year. I couldn't maintain that so I had to drop down. However, am aware of the nuances and the overall success and curbing of insurance premium hikes, so I wasn't too upset. I also don't have frequent hospitalizations though, for which my previous plan would have been ideal. I can definitely see how someone who isn't educated would think "Obama ruined premiums and now I can't afford health insurance." Never mind they couldn't afford it before, damnit, that insurance spike is his fault.
My parents couldn't stay on because of the premium hike and my dad has T1D.  My dad was a contractor and my mom was trying to do real estate at the time.   Otherwise, they would have dropped plan tiers.
  • i made it through the month with $383.
  • I made it through the month with $44 but I'm used to budgeting tightly.

We live on one and a quarter incomes right now with me working full time and FI as a SAHD who works casually. We have some savings and retirement and we don't have to worry about health care, but we stock our pantry and make a lot of our own food.

Please, the best thing we can do for our kids is teach them to cook!  We make our own breads, stews, chilis, etc.
