What bloody week #?

I know I'm not American, but c'mon, even I have to start giving these comments and speeches a *head tilt*.

How's everyone else doing on the rage metre?

Re: What bloody week #?

  • So like someone should look into why the Civil War happened. I mean seems like a big deal.

I know right? It seems to be about some angry people...
  • Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States of America:

TRUMP: They said my campaign is most like, my campaign and win was most like Andrew Jackson with his campaign. And I said, "When was Andrew Jackson?" It was 1828. That's a long time ago. That's Andrew Jackson. And he had a very, very mean and nasty campaign. Because they said this was the meanest and the nastiest. And unfortunately it continues.

    ZITO: His wife died.

TRUMP: His wife died. They destroyed his wife and she died. And, you know, he was a swashbuckler. But when his wife died, you know, he visited her grave every day. I visited her grave actually, because I was in Tennessee.

ZITO: Oh, that's right, you were in Tennessee.

TRUMP: And it was amazing. The people of Tennessee are amazing people. Well, they love Andrew Jackson. They love Andrew Jackson in Tennessee.

    ZITO: Yeah, he's a fascinating —

TRUMP: I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart, and he was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, "There's no reason for this." People don't realize, you know, the Civil War, you think about it, why?

    ZITO: Yeah —

TRUMP: People don't ask that question. But why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?

Everyone talks about how Trump wants to take us back 50 years to "the good old days." I didn't realize he actually wants to take us back to the 1800's.  Don't know why that surprises me.

Because you know 2017-50 is not 1800s lol ... but you know, Trump math
  • I just watched the new House of Cards trailer and it's a fucking scary ass world when Frank Underwood seems less terrifying and threatening than our real-life president.

I find it interesting that shows like Veep and HoC have situations that even a year ago seemed implausible and now, it's like they could be a documentary of the current state of US politics.

Last night SO said, "let's watch the new House of Cards season together when it comes out. It will seem like a break and less scary than reality." My response to him was "the fact that it's less terrifying than reality is exactly why I can't watch it right now."

One of my best friends/MOH was black.  (I know, right: "Some of my best friends are black!"  It's not like that.)  We met at work, and we used to work with this woman who was a southern transplant up north, over the top to the point where she was kind of a caricature.  (She actually said "I declare!" once and we almost died.)

One Halloween, she put on her "Southern belle" costume, which was the usual petticoat/parasol/whole nine yards thing.  (She had some eyeroll-worthy story about how her sorority did an event every year where they all dressed up in these costumes and had some sort of procession and god only knows what else.)  And she was going on about how it was "such a romantic period of our history" and it was a shame that we had "lost" all that.  MOH stared her down and said, point blank, "Not for me."  Much backpedaling ensued.

    I just don't get how people don't think, and/or don't care.

And these are the same kind of people who will claim that the Civil Rights Act "took care of" racism.

People romanticize quite a bit of history. They don't look at the era as a whole, just bits and pieces.
Like when people do it with the 50s. People just like the idea of manners, dressing cute, sock hops and sharing a milkshake, but ignore the fact women didn't have rights, black people were getting hung.

People will always remember what they want to.

Good for your MOH for saying something! Reminded that lady that life wasn't always great for everyone!
  • At least Frank and Claire Underwood are highly intelligent, educated, speak in complete sentences, control themselves, and have goals.  I think Trump is just flailing and throwing shit to see what sticks.  I can't even think of HIM as evil b/c I think he's so completely incompetent.  He's dangerous b/c he's so completely incompetent, stupid, and volatile.
  • I have a friend who I thought posted a really well thought out, nuanced piece re: the monuments to/from the Civil War.  He's a trained historian -- his worry is that removal will cause a "whitewashing" of the Civil War.  His approach was that leave the old monuments, but change the story surrounding them to be a teaching moment, not of Southern pride, but of historical accuracy and a reminder of how wrong things can go.  He did state that some of them would have to go (formal displays of the Confederate flag for instance) and had suggestions for how to decide.

I did think he was right about that and it was a perspective I hadn't really considered.
  • All this talk about his first 100 days pains me, we are not even one third of the way through his first year!

Fingers crossed the AHCA revision 2 fails this week.

I predict Trump years are going to feel like dog years.  As in, 1 year feels like it is 7.  Because it has only been 3 months, but feels sooooo much longer.

Pence is probably wetting himself with glee.

This "abortion cause breast cancer" nutjob has Pence's writing all over it!

  • In equally insane motives of the Trump administration the DOJ is actively pursuing a case against a woman who laughed at AG Session's claim that he had a long history of treating Americans equally. She could face a $500 fine and 6 months in prison.

It's sickening that a wonderful idea...religious freedom...has had its meaning twisted beyond recognition to actually mean "fewer rights for everybody else".

I'm also sickened that the idea of "separation of church and state" has just been trampled into the dirt over the last few decades.

    Agreed!

It's all branding that panders to their base. A sort of evil genius when you think about it. Because at the same time they're branding themselves as the party of Jesus and liberty, they're branding anyone who opposes it as Christian and freedom hating. (Even if it's really intolerant vs. tolerant, respectively.)

They know this would never pass the House and Senate as a bill, so now it's an executive order. Which means that whoever is President next and has to clean up President Trump's shit parade will want to reverse it. And reversing an executive order branded as "religious freedom" will further cement that Jesus/freedom voter base to the Republican party. So they win whether it sticks or not.

It's just a sick strategy for power IMO. They see a large group of people who can get them elected and they dangle a carrot in their face to string them along while others suffer.

  • Yay, your employer can choose to pay you in PTO instead of time and a half for OT hours now!

  • I am looking forward to the Sally Yates testimony next week. It will be public, so that does limit some information. Comey and someone else (I think the NSC chief?) are speaking tomorrow, but that is a closed hearing.
